  • A member of the Soviet Union's women's gymnastic team at the 1976 Olympic Games, Nelli Kim was seventeen when she won two gold medals for her superb performance on the horse vault and for the floor exercises. The slow-motion camera highlights the best moments of her performance. It also shows the person behind the athlete, and the nervousness that is generated by the presence of a new star, Nadia Comeneci of Romania.

I think it was a bit unfair that the media didn't give Nelli credit as much as Nadia. They both were fantastic gymnast.

I fell madly in love with Nellie Kim during the Montreal Olympics. I wasn't there, but I watched on the telli all the exercises she performed. Such an exotic beauty, part Korean part Tartan, what a great combination.
I had the opportunity to meet her during the Atlanta Olympics in 96. I became tongue tied and couldn't say much. But there she was, as beautiful as ever.
Thank you for existing, Miss Nellie Kim. And congratulations on all your wonderful achievements.

That conversation she had with her coach says it all. "I'm fed up with the Olympics!" These girls work so hard to get there, I think sometimes the pressure is overwhelming to be at your best once you get there. They almost need a vacation before the Olympics. I wonder what Nelli's state of mind was leading up to that Olympics.

I disagreed with that assessment and made my own, which was that it was her effervescence that made her the darling of the media. Her performance put her in the spotlight, but it was her personality that captivated the media (and the public). Had she been stoic, even with her outstanding performance and small stature, she would have gotten far less attention.

He had to try to motivate Nelli, get her to up her top game, remind her that she was at the Olympics to win a gold medal. These moments can bypass an Olympian as a blur and they leave wondering what happened and why they didn't perform to the best of their ability. Nelli's performance definitely seemed to improve after the coach's intervention.

@@jameshogan6142 You are right. I just find the whole interaction between them very natural and funny. Even though they are aware of the camera, they still go with their clash. Moreover, for the Soviet political elite the Olympics were not just a matter of sportsmanship and national pride, but also of what they perceived as an opportunity to showcase the presumptive "success" of their political system, as conveyed by the performance of their top athletes. In this regard, Nellie was so fresh and different, because she was taking the Olympic competition without that political burden, choosing instead to have fun, perform to the best of her talent, and not give a s..t about pressure, not even from her coach.

@@jorgeponce5512 Nelli may have become distracted by being in Canada which would have been a big change from her homeland or perhaps she was discomfited that her main rival was only fourteen years old. Nelli herself was a year older in 1972 but was considered at that time too young to compete at senior Olympic level.
I think the coach had a difficult job in influencing an adult 19 year old gymnast whereas a fourteen year old would have been more docile and easily directed. However he was a very good mentor as he convinced her to concentrate and give her best performance without alienating her either. When she said she was sick of the Olympics he said okay forget them but think! I want to see Kim. She responded with two perfect tens and a major contribution to the team performance to win three gold medals. If she had performed at the same intensity earlier she might well have shared the beam and the bars with Nadia and been the individual gold medallist in 1976.
