She changed my life and inspired me. I went twice to the Olympics (athletics 92-96) because of her. I was a lost young teenager and saw her in Montreal 1976 then my life changed. Thank you Nellie and glad that we are friends today.
I fell madly in love with Nellie Kim during the Montreal Olympics. I wasn't there, but I watched on the telli all the exercises she performed. Such an exotic beauty, part Korean part Tartan, what a great combination. I had the opportunity to meet her during the Atlanta Olympics in 96. I became tongue tied and couldn't say much. But there she was, as beautiful as ever. Thank you for existing, Miss Nellie Kim. And congratulations on all your wonderful achievements.

She makes you want to be somebody. That's the definition of loving competition. Not to put others down, but to lift yourself up. Then you can be taken seriously. Then you have the power to help others succeed.
There are several mistakes in the comments. It is said that Tourischeva came second on the bars and Comaneci on the floor. In reality Ungureanu was second on bars, Tourischeva second on the floors and Comaneci came third, after Kim and Tourischeva. Another mistake was in the final analyses. Kim didn't came second in team competition. Russians were the first, Romanian the second ones. Kim came second in the individual all-around, wich was won by Comaneci. The sportscaster should have been more prepared!!!

We will never see anything like this again, Olga Korbut, Nellie Kim and Nadia Comăneci, in the same contest. 3 of the 4 best female gymnasts who ever lived. The fourth, and greatest ever, is of course Elena Mukhina..
That conversation she had with her coach says it all. "I'm fed up with the Olympics!" These girls work so hard to get there, I think sometimes the pressure is overwhelming to be at your best once you get there. They almost need a vacation before the Olympics. I wonder what Nelli's state of mind was leading up to that Olympics.
I think it reflects the human condition. To think it is no longer worthwhile and walk away. It doesn't matter if you are a mother of a difficult child or a monk in a strict order it always takes courage and perseverance to carry on and do one's best.
The vault technique advanced exponentially from 69 to 76. I saw footage from the Euro championships in 69 where the vaults were just a handstand pushing off the vault. Fast forward to 76 and there are midair twists both before and after touching the vault.

Aunque técnicamente la parte técnica siempre pesó más y generalmente ganaba la gimnasta que menos errores técnicos o de ejecución tenía de acuerdo al código que regía el deporte. Por algo Verá Caslavska ganó mucho en México 68 pese a que Natalia Kuchinskaya era superior en cuanto a calidad artística, fluidez y ritmo, sus movimientos eran demasiado armoniosos, en cambio Verá era muy limpia técnicamente, era potente, pero sus ejercicios de suelo no eran tan graciosos como los de Natasha o Larisa Petrik. Básicamente Verá fue como la Simone Biles en este tiempo: fuerte, potente, limpia, dinámica y eso es al final lo que te hace ganar medallas.
I always like watching gymnastics, and I was still pretty young in 1976…so I hadn't known who Nelli Kim was until today! We always heard about Nadia, always. It was interesting to learn something new, and to see this footage. Sadly, I think the photography was a bit shoddy. A lot of legs being cut off, which I don't understand. Gymnastics incorporates the whole body. Anyway, thank you for uploading this :)
They are now circus-acrobats IMHO. But, something had to be done about the insanely dangerous routines allowed at the time, after the Elena Mukhina tragedy.

I disagreed with that assessment and made my own, which was that it was her effervescence that made her the darling of the media. Her performance put her in the spotlight, but it was her personality that captivated the media (and the public). Had she been stoic, even with her outstanding performance and small stature, she would have gotten far less attention.
Why do you keep saying her rival, Nadia Comaneci, was 13 years old? There have been several under-age scandals in gymnastics, but I've never heard anyone talk about Nadia in regards to them. Plus, she's been so vocal about everything since she retired, I can't imagine her not mentioning it if that was indeed what happened.
Nelli Kim was such a great gymnast but she was overshadowed by Nadia Comaneci because Nadia was a newcomer on the scene and was young and sprite. The media focused on that.

Abraham Lora it’s not that...what happens is that majority of the gymnasts would rather not watch the performances since it can cause a lot of anxiety and nerves specially if the gymnast makes a mistake. I’m not a gymnast, but if I were in their shoes I would do the same...not pay attention...besides at the end of the day yes, it is about winning but also it is about being a much better gymnast than you were the day before :)

Yes I remember at the time all the focus was on Nadia. How young she was and how talented to be competing against ladies five and ten years older than her when in reality her youth gave her an advantage. She was really good and deserves all the adulation but the but the other gymnasts did not receive
As duas ganharam a mesma quantia de ouros. Mas em competições diferentes. A Nellie na competição por equipes (junto com o resto do time dela) e na final por aparelhos (salto e solo) e a Nadia ficou com o ouro na final por aparelhos (trave e barras) mas ela ganhou o ouro na competição "principal" que era o individual geral. Então, esse ouro pesou muito mais e a Nadia recebeu muito mais atenção da mídia. Mas as duas tiveram ótimos resultados.

Esse fato, bem como a vitória de Nádia no individual geral, acabaram por trazer todos os holofotes para ela. Suspeito também que o fato de Nádia ser romena (e não soviética) a tornava mais palatável para o público e a imprensa ocidental. Faço apenas um reparo: não havia necessidade de escrever "principal" entre aspas. O individual geral é SIM a mais importante disputa da ginástica já que a atleta tem que mostrar versatilidade e pontuar em todos os aparelhos.

These were the days when gymnastics was elegant, and there was really a spirit of innovation and fight. Today most of the girls are bulkier like man, no elegance with skills that are only possible with the tumbling Matt they have. These were the days when artistic gymnastics as artistic today it is a simple tumbling exercises. How do I miss these days.
I agree. Far more aesthetically pleasing, truly artistic. I believe both the Soviets and Romanians studied ballet and it really showed. Graceful and elegant. Today's gymnasts moves seem sloppy and jerky to me.

O treinador dela. Mas ele não era o treinador oficial do time soviético, por isso, ele não estava na arena de competição e tinha que sentar na arquibancada. Mas, com a autorização do treinador oficial, ele podia entrar na arena de competição a qualquer momento pra dar algum conselho de último minuto pra ela.
I still think Nadia's floor performance at the end was better. The moves were better and the landing with her legs spread after the salto was unique. But it's a personal opinion.

Comaneci was 14, not 13, and the individual competitions couldn't have taken place on 21 Jun 1976 because the games begin in July 1976.

Nelli Kim was such a great gymnast but she was overshadowed by Nadia Comaneci because Nadia was a newcomer on the scene and was young and sprite. The media focused on that.

Abraham Lora it’s not that...what happens is that majority of the gymnasts would rather not watch the performances since it can cause a lot of anxiety and nerves specially if the gymnast makes a mistake. I’m not a gymnast, but if I were in their shoes I would do the same...not pay attention...besides at the end of the day yes, it is about winning but also it is about being a much better gymnast than you were the day before :)

You might prefer others gymnastic ... is very silly to judge those amazing gymnasts that worked so hard and trained non stop only based on their beauty.
it is no doubhgt for me, that Nellis floor was better then Nadia. It was just more classic. Nadia's was little bit more expressive, but not enough.

モントリオールオリンピックではコマネチが超有名だが、獲得した金メダルの数では二人とも３つで同じだったが、なぜかキムは忘れ去られコマネチだけが日本人の記憶に残っているようだ。コマネチというと１０点満点の演技が有名だが、キムも床と跳馬で１０点満点を出している。個人的はキムのほうが可愛かったので好みだった。

Yes I remember at the time all the focus was on Nadia. How young she was and how talented to be competing against ladies five and ten years older than her when in reality her youth gave her an advantage. She was really good and deserves all the adulation but the but the other gymnasts did not receive

Afinal , quem ficou com a medalha de Ouro, Nádia ou Nelli?
As duas ganharam a mesma quantia de ouros. Mas em competições diferentes. A Nellie na competição por equipes (junto com o resto do time dela) e na final por aparelhos (salto e solo) e a Nadia ficou com o ouro na final por aparelhos (trave e barras) mas ela ganhou o ouro na competição "principal" que era o individual geral. Então, esse ouro pesou muito mais e a Nadia recebeu muito mais atenção da mídia. Mas as duas tiveram ótimos resultados.
@@DJDiegoGarcia Concordo em grande parte com sua análise. Acrescento, porém, que Nádia conseguiu sete notas DEZ contra duas de Nelli. Esse fato, bem como a vitória de Nádia no individual geral, acabaram por trazer todos os holofotes para ela. Suspeito também que o fato de Nádia ser romena (e não soviética) a tornava mais palatável para o público e a imprensa ocidental. Faço apenas um reparo: não havia necessidade de escrever "principal" entre aspas. O individual geral é SIM a mais importante disputa da ginástica já que a atleta tem que mostrar versatilidade e pontuar em todos os aparelhos.

These were the days when gymnastics was elegant, and there was really a spirit of innovation and fight. Today most of the girls are bulkier like man, no elegance with skills that are only possible with the tumbling Matt they have. These were the days when artistic gymnastics as artistic today it is a simple tumbling exercises. How do I miss these days.
I agree. Far more aesthetically pleasing, truly artistic. I believe both the Soviets and Romanians studied ballet and it really showed. Graceful and elegant. Today's gymnasts moves seem sloppy and jerky to me.
Era gimnasta de Argentina en esos años y puedo discernir que en esas olimpiadas como siempre se tiro abajo a gimnastas sovieticos, y en este caso a Nelly Kim, que era superior a Nadia Comanecci por la cantidad y dificultad de los elementos que presentaba en sus series.

O treinador dela. Mas ele não era o treinador oficial do time soviético, por isso, ele não estava na arena de competição e tinha que sentar na arquibancada. Mas, com a autorização do treinador oficial, ele podia entrar na arena de competição a qualquer momento pra dar algum conselho de último minuto pra ela.
I still think Nadia's floor performance at the end was better. The moves were better and the landing with her legs spread after the salto was unique. But it's a personal opinion.
Nadia was great but it was Nellis' double somersault which decided it.
