    this is a well done comparison.....short duration and like riffs between drums...sonic memory works best with short duration...and got right to it without telling life's story.

    The Black Beauty has the most presence and body to my ear. The Supra falls off a step with the Acrolite a step off of the Supra, which are both drier. Having said that, they are all nice snares. It just depends on what you're going for. I own an 81 Black Beauty and 70s Acrolite. They both record well and mix well with other instruments.

    I love the Black Beauty and Supraphonic. The Supraphonic shines in low tuning in this recording, but the BB kicks it in the medium and high tuning to my ears. All fantastic snares none the less ;) Thanks for making this.

    A bit hard to tell because the player uses a lot of rim shot and this provides a bit more uneven tone with a small sample size. These are three tremendous snare drums. I own two of them (a 1969 5 x 14 Supraphonic and a 1993 hand hammer tub lug 6 1/2 x 14 Black Beauty). I practice on a 1975 5 x 14 Acrolite pretty frequently. I would say the Supra is the most versatile (and my 69 still has the keystone badge with Imperial lugs...I think it is the prettiest combination). The Black Beauty the most unique and the Acro gives you much of their tone at a fraction of the cost. Fantastic, all....

    High tuning:
    1. Black Beauty
    2. Acrolite
    3. Supra
    Medium tuning:
    1. Black Beauty
    2. Supra
    3. Acrolite
    Low tuning:
    1. Supra
    2. Black Beauty
    3. Acrolite
    I broke out the studio isolation headphones for this one and went through the video about 5 times most of it with eyes closed trying to take as much bias out as I could. Well Done!! Thanks for this excellent comparison.

    It's the Black Beauty for me. To my ears, the Supraphonic sounds too metallic by comparison. And the Acrolite just isn't my taste at all. I used to have a Black Beauty in the 90s but sold it after only a few months-I hated the throwoff. But now I miss the sound.

      I don't know Ludwig snares very well-and knew even less then. But looking at pictures now, I'm thinking it was a P85? The tension knob would always unscrew as I was playing. I had to retighten like every song. The other thing was that the drum didn't quite fit with my maple DW kit. It was louder and just sounded like a different instrument. But... on its own and recorded, it sounded great. And I miss it.

    Yeah I have used the same black beauty 6.5 for 20 years but just recently tried an acrolite 5" in rehearsal -- just tapping it too - nowt special in the room -- but damn it on the recordings it sounds great !! Really fat but crisp cut thru. BB would kick it's puny butt live .. but in a recording I'm not so sure. Anyone else find this ?

    Hmm. Acrolite is the cheapest snare drum, sounds the best, and is the most versatile. This is why i'll never get rid of mine. Every other major drum company has tried to make their own "acrolite", but can never achieve that distinct tone and sound. Acrolite is by far the best..

    • @timcline161
      @timcline161 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Bought 5" BB. Two weeks later found old Acrolite on ebay. $75. Cdn with original hard case. Took me a couple days to admit to myself Acro was my favorite snare. I didn't need the new, full price Black beauty

    • @Assimilator702
      @Assimilator702 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rhythmista It’s a good drum but it’s doesn’t sound “better”.....just different. I’ll take the Black Beauty or the Supraphonic.

      No and no but it's still a great value snare.

    • @Assimilator702
      @Assimilator702 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@portley777 Why be so elitist? If you put 1/4 of an O ring on that BB it would have the same chance as the newer drum. With the proper head we could make all three drums sound virtually identical. Again .....neither is better. They're all simply.....different.

    I think the BB has the best voice in this comparison. The Supra seems a bit too bright for my liking. The Acro was a nice dry note, with a bit lower fundamental. For the $300 price difference between he BB and the Acro... I'd go Acrolite all day. I'm still a little bummed at Ludwig for maintaining the cheap feeling P85 throw-off on these. When you're paying $700+ for a Black Beauty... it should come with a throw-off that costs more than $20. It's a real bummer and a slap in the face of the consumer, when Ludwig continues to keep this garbage on their high end drums.

  • @bartni

    Black Beauty 2018 seems like a joke comparing to other two. I prefer Acrolite over Supraphonic in general but your Supraphonic sounds better than Acrolite. I also I have an impression that in the low tuning you tuned Acrolite a bit higher than Supraphonic.

    Black beauty is best, Supraphonic is good, Acrolite doesn't cut it. I have a 1965 Acrolite, first drum I ever owned, it was okay for a beginner but the sound and feel weren't anything like any of the higher-end drums. I eventually replaced it with a Yamaha Recording Custom steel shell. I'm kind of surprised at the recent enthusiasm for Acrolites.

    Black beauty, Supraphonic in that order. But it’s close between the two. Tuning could make choice between the two a toughy. Acrolite not in the same zip code. Just my 2 cent ears opinion.

    • @michaelcaplin8969
      @michaelcaplin8969 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, although youd likely want to switch the places on the acro and supra. The acro isn't tuned low enough on this video, but just generally sounds better, drier and fatter than the supra for low stuff. The supra sounds less focused, less dry and more "open", which sounds much better in medium tunings than in the low tunings where the super focused and studio friendly acro shines :)

    The black beauty has such a beautiful, warm, balanced chime. I like the brightness of the supraphonic, I like it so much that I own one. The acrolite here was the loser but that’s to be expected as it’s the cheapest. Still beats other drums on the market.
