In the endless quest for tone, drummers have debated for decades over the merits of different materials used in constructing snare drums. When considering the array of options and the respective sonic characteristics of each, Ludwig simply said, “yes” when designing their Acro snare drum. Available in bronze, brass, copper, and aluminum, the Acro line sees Ludwig reimagining an unexpected sleeper-hit snare from the 1960s: the Acrolite snare drum. Once offered as a student and instructional drum, it became a staple among professionals around the world. Now, Ludwig expands its timbral possibilities across a quartet of construction materials, and who better to demonstrate the critical differences in these options than Sweetwater’s own NDV? Check it out!

The classic Aluminum will always be one of my favorites, because duh, and while the Bronze and Copper both sound great as well, that Brass definitely takes the win for me. Awesome video, and an awesome line of snares. Ludwig really does have the market cornered on metal snares.

@frankthedrummer7482 The dream is a Tama Starphonic copper, but that's out of my budget for now. So I decided on a lesser-known brand, Fame, and their 14 x 6.5 model copper drum. I checked it out again last night, and the Tama still catches my fancy more than this Ludwig. Something about it... But while I'm still in this same tax bracket, I think I'll go ahead and get the Fame as my first copper drum.

I have always played Ludwig snares and these are great. The Arco and Brass would be great rock snares with sticks. The Brass and Bronze sound amazing with brushes. Copper is unique to fit on that one track that needs that sound.

Every once in a while, a company does this…crash lands two of my favorite things together and it ends up sounding (at least on the initial impression) like i hoped it would. It’s the same crisis I had when Zildjian released its K sweet line…and that brass acro is a perfect example. I’ve loved the sound of brass snares since before I even knew what they were…I’ve loved acrolites since my buddy brought one into our rehearsal space 15 years ago and said “listen to this thing…I got it for $75”. Good luck with the latter portion of that sentiment nowadays. I spent about $100 on my vintage acrolite years back which would *never* happen now. That’s the danger involved when a community discovers a professional caliber item on the cheap. But then you get awesome stuff like THIS sometimes…so it’s like 🤷‍♂️. At any rate, I’ll probably be picking one of these brass acrolites up. I mean dude…come on…let’s be serious…

Nick, you said, "you can't go wrong with ANY of these drums." Well, Sweetwater can't go wrong with you as a drummer/salesman. You're so great at both, I feel it would be an insult for me to say if you're a better drummer than a salesman, or vice versa. You bring out the best in these drums the way you articulate yourself verbally and in your playing. I'm definitely going to get one of each! Thank you, Nick.

Nick, another great comparison video...as usual.
Man, I'm a total snob when it comes to the nuances of drum tunings. But for the life of me, I've never heard the differences between the different alloys to be of any great significance. I've definitely felt the need to reach for a wood snare or an alloy snare, and I've even felt like a gig called for a hand hammered and sometimes a non-hammered shell. But I've never felt the need to play a brass vs a copper or bronze or titanium...etc. I hear the subtle differences of each, but in the context of playing live music, I've never felt that the contributions and characteristics of a specific alloy are heard. And maybe that's it...maybe this applies more for a recording. But then again, I've done a ton of that and never felt like I needed this metal over this other metal. I'm rambling. Thanks for the demo of these snares.

I like the brass one the most! I have to 6.5” supralite that is just unbelievable sounding everyone always asks what snare it is at my gigs and I think the most versatile snare I have is my 5.5” black magic snare with die cast hoops and tube lugs. Ludwig snares are amazing!
