Great video. Actually the best on grip installations I have ever seen. I was starting to replace mine last nite and came across the throttle issue then found this video and did everything that was shown and it went flawlessly. Again, great job guys and thanks for your help.
Thank you! Very thorough and glad you included the throttle-by-wire piece, too. I was fortunate and have that on my 2021 HD Slim, so a five minute install for that side and 10 minutes for the other side.
Been doin' that for years with my oldies ('35 & '42). A few turns of friction tape was used to keep them in place in the old days, I still use it. Compressed air through the end hole gets them off fast and you can put the new ones on the same way.
When adjusting cables always lube cables than adjust. First with front end pointing strait forward tighten until bell crank or plate is full range. Then tighten locknut and lube the threads before installing boots. Moving to idle cable (inside cable) turn front to full right lock( this puts the most tension on cable) then tighten untill it no longer snaps back, then loosen until it snaps back freely. Straighten front end and check freeplay, loosen if prefered. Lube threads and install last boot.
Thanks for posting this up. I am about to change the grips on my 'Slim' and it's nice to have the confidence that when you know how to do it, then it's really easy.
Yours is the first grip change how to vid I've seen that says to glue on the left side grip. Not really needed, but I suppose it doesn't hurt either. You also forgot to mention putting cardboard in the brake lever to save the brake switch.
Great video! I am NOT mechanical but think I can do this. I have an '07 FLHR. What do I have to do to get into the throttle body like you did to adjust tension etc? Thanks!
When you check the adjustment on the throttle body, what are you feeling for? I understand it snapping back but what are you feeling for when you push in with your finger?
I have a 2005 night train and it was absolutely necessary to loosen them up (unless there's a trick otherwise). I have seen some other videos where they are able to remove the grip right after taking the housing off but definitely not on my bike.
I have a 15 Harley Street 750. I want to get the HD Black Diamond grips. Those are held on with a 4x6" Double Sided Tape. That Grip Locker you used gives more time to slide on. And adjust.
Hey so listen to me. I listened to you. And I was very careful with the little brass doo dad. But my bad bike voodoo wins every time. The second brass doo dad gets flung onto the ground and I’m like that’s cool my garage is clean. But the side door was open and it bounced out and maybe under my camping trailer I was too high to follow it that fast. But anyways. I tried.
Got a question,,just bought a 1998 Heritage Softail, had it about a week!! I was running along,@55 mph,and the engine just stopped!!?? I,,got a new battery, new coil, and new plugs,,and I took petcock apart and cleaned it,,what would cause it to just stop running??? It will turn over, but will not start, don't think it's getting gas,,I cleaned the screen in the tank also, and sprayed carb cleaner in carb,,,this is the first carbureted bike I've owned,,, what else would cause it to just stop, dead,,and not restart???
Holy crap, I was going to say something, but your comment topped mine for sure, and to get a response from them with a comical twist was surely a well thought out comeback. Cheers to you both!
DON'T CUT THE OLD GRIP OFF! It's just idiotic to take a razor blade to a set of grips when you can get it off with a bit of WD40. just take the clamp off that holds the lever in place and use a bit of wire to make a gap on the open end. spray a liberal amount of the WD40 and then once off clean with light amount of lighter fluid. :). CAREFUL lighter fluid like petrol WILL peal your paint if you're not careful!
So on the throttle and idle side.... both cables are loose and in the grooves of the grip. when i go put the switch housing back on, the grip has no play at all and is super tight. no matter how i adjust the cables it makes no difference... what am i doing wrong?! it’s so frustrating.
i sprayed some electric cleaner on mine ,and blew a copper clip, and i belive a piece of plastic for the thottle cruise lock, but i realy dont have a clue,HELP
On my bike there is an end cap on the end of the clutch side grip and it didn't move. This video was not helpful for me, because it has answered everything that I have already knew but did not answer the only thing that I did not know.. Cutting a rubber grip with a blade like it was shown is the easiest "bruteforce" way to do it but seriously I think that whoever watches a video about disassembling something wants to know how to disassemble it without destroying anything :( (There are more clever ways to do it: injecting oil or soapy water under it, blowing it off with compressed air etc...) After all I have managed to pry the end cap off (risked to brake it to pieces), it seems that it was glued inside the bar.
I have too much play in my throttle after adjusting the cables. You didn't say how to take play out or give more if you need it. My handle turns about 1/2" and I don't like that.
Not sure why some folks are saying not to cut the grip. I mean, aren't we tossing the old ones into the trash? I used a swiss army knife to cut the clutch side grip, chucked it, scraped off the glue residue, glued and slid on the new grip. The next morning the grip is solid as a rock. Thanks for the video, always great to see folks helping folks.
This dont even help. What am I feeling for to know my throttle is adjusted right? I hate when someone does a how to video for people who already know how to. Im guessing its till its open all the way when twisted all the way and closed when not twisted...
Poor video due to instructions being "just go ahead"... Just go ahead and take the old grip off and put the new one on, then just go ahead and go for a ride with everything magically positioned in place. I need some more detailed instructions lol.

What kinda lube you talking?
Awesome video! I ride myself and J & P videos are sooooo helpful. Thank you
Just used your video to change out the grips on a 99 fatboy, pretty much the same procedure except for an extra screw, thanks
Thanks for posting this up. I am about to change the grips on my 'Slim' and it's nice to have the confidence that when you know how to do it, then it's really easy.
This is the best I found...this guy is really good!!!
Concise! YT needs more videos like this. Well done. ;)
We used to use hairspray on bicycle handlebars when we changed grips. Lol
Thought about getting new grips but wasn't sure how they were put on. Great info.
Very informative and helpful, now by all means, go ahead!!!!
Fantastic video guys!!
thanks, very efficient vid.... saved me a few bucks doing it myself, with your help!!!
Don't cut the grips off..just use a little air compressor and a blow gun and shoot air under the grips while twisting them off ..
Curious why...aren't we trashing the old grips? :)
Because it's better for everyone to simply sell it, obviously.
Do old worn out grips really sell? If time is money cut them off.
There is a difference between "old grips" and "old worn out grips"
Cut then it's faster
Excellent vid I thought except for the brake lever block
Well done
This really helped alot. Very through . Thank you
Yours is the first grip change how to vid I've seen that says to glue on the left side grip. Not really needed, but I suppose it doesn't hurt either. You also forgot to mention putting cardboard in the brake lever to save the brake switch.
Yea, glad I watched a bunch of videos, used the cardboard to protect the brake switch.
Not sure I understand this. How do you use cardboard to protect the brake switch? First time I've ever heard this mentioned.
Could you explain this a bit further?
Thanks for the video! Nice work!
Excellent video! Exactly what I was looking for. Thank you.
I use a universal throttle on my 1983 Shovelhead. Have single cable going to Mikuni Carb. So simple to change grips!
Great video. 👊🏼
Great video! I am NOT mechanical but think I can do this. I have an '07 FLHR. What do I have to do to get into the throttle body like you did to adjust tension etc? Thanks!

Great video, lots of useful information.
But do I go ahead and do it? Lol great video, bro.
Cool thanks I am actually going to change my e-scooter grips they are pretty squished. 😁
Ive been looking for a video on how to change grips on a single throttle cable system
what about the brake light switch it gets stuck on if not positioned right?
I slipped a piece of cardboard in between the caliper pull and stop to relieve the tension
Thanks for the video , i am about to put some new ones on the Fatboy , Thanks Again !!!
Thank you very much for posting
How can you tell, by feeling the toddle body, if your cable is fully adjusted. Please elaborate.
Excellent. Thank You.
go ahead and go ahead
lollllllllllll
I still use friction tape and gas in the grip too.
Is this similar for a 1976 single cable
Out of curiosity, where is this shop located?
Getting ready to put my 3rd set of grips on my ride. How do I get the metal grip off the clutch side? Can't use a razor blade!
go ahead was mentioned 21 times during this 6:41 video hahaha
I was going to go ahead and mention this.
That was the only reason I "went ahead" and came over to the comments section lol!
Great! Will show my customer this vedio
Thank you, man!
Never heard of somebody loosening the throttle cables to do this
I have a 2005 night train and it was absolutely necessary to loosen them up (unless there's a trick otherwise). I have seen some other videos where they are able to remove the grip right after taking the housing off but definitely not on my bike.
You have to loosen the throttle cables because the cables are attached to the grip on a dual cable bike
Excellent video thank you
you can "go ahead" and say "go ahead" a lot.
I have a 15 Harley Street 750. I want to get the HD Black Diamond grips. Those are held on with a 4x6" Double Sided Tape. That Grip Locker you used gives more time to slide on. And adjust.
Another video said, do not glue the left grip! ??

Sounds like you aren't getting a spark. Check the plugs and/or plug wires
I dare you, I double dare you, say 'go ahead' one more Goddamn time!
We'll go ahead and stop overusing the phrase, thanks David.
J&P Cycles J & P for the win!
What aint no country I've ever heard of. they speak English in What?
Holy crap, I was going to say something, but your comment topped mine for sure, and to get a response from them with a comical twist was surely a well thought out comeback. Cheers to you both!
We used to use aquanet back in the day
Thanks for the info
I would like to see one with throttle by wire.

Andrew Rimell that sounds like an idiotic way to remove a grip when you can just cut it off.
Why would you not want to cut it off unless your planning on saving the old grip for some reason and if that's the case why even replace them.
And what about throttle by wire???
PS. Wile you have your switch housing off .It's a good time to spray some lube down your cables ! 😳
So on the throttle and idle side.... both cables are loose and in the grooves of the grip. when i go put the switch housing back on, the grip has no play at all and is super tight. no matter how i adjust the cables it makes no difference... what am i doing wrong?! it’s so frustrating.
Have u checked ur throttle adjustment screw? That little plastic turn knob under the right throttle side controls might be over tightened
Never said anything about removal of air cleaner assembly to access throttle body.
There is no reason to access the throttle body to change grips.
@@jpcycles what about cable adjustment back to after slackening?
@@henrygabriel9951 Use the cable adjusters at the top by the grip.
@@jpcycles They have to be loosened to remove the throttle grip. How can you tell you have tightened them enough without seeing the throttle body?
@@henrygabriel9951 watch the video. You can the adjustment is in the grip side, not the throttle body.
I can't believe no one has mentioned to put a spacer under the brake lever or you will most likely ruin the brake switch sensor.
how do you do that. I am new to this
Please explain further if you could
i sprayed some electric cleaner on mine ,and blew a copper clip, and i belive a piece of plastic for the thottle cruise lock, but i realy dont have a clue,HELP
I'm getting sound but the video is just black. Anybody know how to fix that?
On my bike there is an end cap on the end of the clutch side grip and it didn't move. But...but...the grip is going into the trash. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Those brass ferrules WILL fall off and you will spend 20 minutes of a 30 minute install searching for them.
what is the name of this moto ?
3:31
I have too much play in my throttle after adjusting the cables. You didn't say how to take play out or give more if you need it. My handle turns about 1/2" and I don't like that.
i dont know??? is that an idle question. did you put it back the same way??? obviously not.
Original best grips
The guy is showing you how to change the handle bar grips. Why don't you thank him. Gees...you guys are brutal. Okay , it is funny though.

Someone mail this guy some nitrile gloves :D
I forgot about the gas!
cutting the grips off = no use an airhose... blows right off
go ahead !
fu(kd up my brake switch sensor thanx alot
How to make a easy bow
Dude, what's with the need to add "go ahead" to every step of your install?
It's annoying.
I'll get some grip lock - other dude was saying use rubbing alcohol from his wife.......................................................
You said "go ahead" about 546843513516458 times.
should've never removed by grips.. I am fucked. haha
Too many go aheads but thanks.
Poor video due to instructions being "just go ahead"... Just go ahead and take the old grip off and put the new one on, then just go ahead and go for a ride with everything magically positioned in place. I need some more detailed instructions lol.
Excellent video thank you
