Priority 600 Bicycle Review

  • This is my 'layperson' review of the Priority 600 bicycle. My husband and I both ride these and love them. This responsive, versatile bike has allowed me to increase the range of where/how far I can go, and my confidence in my cycling.
    Getting out there on any bicycle is a pure joy, but this 600 takes it to the next level for me. I don't dread the uphills, and have very little to worry about going mechanically wrong while I'm bicycling.
    I ride this bike about 50% on pavement, and 50% on gravel, although it's also gone through mud, snow, and even a flooded stream with zero problems. I am excited to try bike packing with it, hopefully this summer!
    I want to give a shout out to a few of the people that influenced me most to try cycling:
    Anna McNuff - reading her bicycling adventure books made me want to not just read the adventure, but put myself in one (maybe not as grand, but I'll work on that): / annamcnuff
    Ryan Van Duzer - his adventures and attitude toward life are inspirational and he introduced Priority Bicycles into my world: / duzertv
    Juliet Elliott - her always upbeat adventures are so fun to follow, and she does such a variety of bicycling: / julietelliottschannel

    Good review. I've only gotten back into biking last year, after two decades out of the saddle, and am getting really interested in finding a nice, modern bike. The almost universally positive reviews this bike is getting makes it _really_ tempting. Even better are reviews like this by people who aren't hardcore riders and are around my age or older. Despite missing out through my thirties and most of my 20s, it does feel like I will have plenty of years of biking ahead of me.

    • @HikerT
      @HikerT  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes! That is how I felt and I couldn't believe how much joy it has brought me. I guess I had it in my head that bikes were for kids and athletes, but bikes really are for everyone. Whatever you get, II bet you will be super happy that you are out there on a bicycle!

    I have my 600 now... about a month ago. I ordered the shorter higher stem. Seems to be... ok. I'm having some physicle problems at the moment... blood sugar & prostrate... but I will overcome !
    I also plan .... as you did... for a Apollo. I was gonna put on a Jones bar. The 2.5 elevated one. I thought all the cables would be ok... but mine are too short. So instead of changing out the cables, I just put the orginal bars back on. One Ytuber did that to his 600 with no problems. Because the Jones bars have a different pull back angel and the 2.5 inch elevation.... the orginal cables were just too tight and a different angel. It will be next Spring... before I can swing the Apollo... but that's not tooo far away. Keep up the videos ! I'll be watching.

      Sorry to hear you're dealing with physical issues! Great attitude though - you will overcome! I feel pretty lucky because I am able to ride my bike mostly pain-free - I deal with a lot of arthritis pain when I hike.
      Thanks for watching my videos - I have a lot of rides planned and life just keeps getting in the way so I haven't put out a bicycling one in a bit. Here in the PNW right now fall has started by dumping rain like crazy which makes a ride less fun and filming much more problematic 😆 I'll definitely have at least a couple coming up in October though!
      Sorry your modification didn't work out as planned!

      @@stoutdog56 North Bend would be nice - right up in the mountains and definitely more remote than here. I live in Lake Stevens and it's definitely more of a lake-party/city feel here. Snohomish south of us, or Marysville or Arlington north of us have a better small-town type atmosphere still I think. All of these places are getting developed out so fast! It's sad - too much traffic! : ) We have kind of an oasis of nature in the middle of it all.

      😆 sometimes easier said than done. That would be a good one to try, especially on weekdays probably. It didn't sound like they have too many campsites. I'd like to try up the Mountain Loop Hwy too - once you get up a ways and can do dispersed camping, the bicycle would be able to park in places cars couldn't, so there would be a ton of additional places to pick.

    I purchase two Priority 600's last fall (small for wife, larger for me). They came with the Goodyear County tires, which after a short (very short) ride in my neighborhood, were swapped for Continental Contact Plus 42mm tires. I could not get the fenders to stop rubbing, due to the width of the 50mm Goodyear tires. And there wasn't a great amount of clearance between the outside of the tire, and the underside of the fender. No matter how many times I readjusted the fenders, one 'bump', would cause rubbing. There is a limited selection of 'non-gravel/mountain' bike tires in 650b size, so those looking for a predominately paved surface bike, it's a consideration. The 600x comes with the more common 700c wheels, and there are a lot more tread styles available. However, there are compromises to be made. Namely, the 600x has mechanical disc brakes, whereas, the 600 has hydraulic. There are pluses and minuses to both types.
    I also replaced the flat handlebar on my bike, with a pullback design, as I find the flat bar too had on my wrists. And added a Topeak MTX rear rack and bag, along with a small handlebar bag. Which necessitated relocating the headlamp to the fork.
    I agree on the gearing. Where I ride (paved streets/paths/compact gravel), I'm usually in 6th-10 gear, with the occasional 11th-12th on downhills or tailwind aided flats. The lower gears are rarely used, except for those few brutal climbs. Which I try to avoid... I'm researching changing the main or rear sprocket (which means changing belt size), to get a bit more top end.

    • @HikerT
      @HikerT  ปีที่แล้ว

      Great info! My husband ended up adding upright bar ends on his handlebars as well due to his wrists and loves them. I have thought about adding a handlebar rack which would necessitate me relocating the headlight as well. Still trying to figure out if I really want to do that. It carries everything I want it to with the rear rack and paneers, but was thinking about having my dog in the front instead of a trailer.

    Thanks for the review , I’m comparing the 600 to the Apollo gravel which is much less expansive but doesn’t have the wide gear range but is also much lighter. I’m getting back into biking after a several decade long absence and am looking at all my options . Comfort is more important then speed and so is gearing as I also live in the mountainous Pacific NW

    • @HikerT
      @HikerT  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for watching! To be fair to the Apollo, I really need to spend more time on it. It is definitely a lighter bike, and will give you a little more speed for those low-elevation railroad grade type rides. I live in the PNW also, and for hills (which normally would make me cringe) I have loved my 600. I can just gear it down and slowly make my way right up. I have rarely had to dismount and walk it. I think they are both comfortable, but very different - using the handlebars they come with, the Apollo has more of that lower/leaning forward positioning, and the 600 is more upright.

    May I ask what your inseam measurement was? (I'm torn between getting a small, which better fits my inseam (28" with bare feet, or 29.5" with shoes) or a medium). From what I understand about measurements, one's height is not important. (I'm 5'10" but apparently that doesn't matter.)
    Also, I heard you say that getting off the 600 is not a problem for you. How do you get off? (That's my biggest worry.) Do you have a video showing how you dismount?

    • @HikerT
      @HikerT  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      My inseam is about 30" and I actually reached out to Priority to get their recommendation as well to make sure I picked the right size. I got the small and I definitely wouldn't want to have gone bigger. They had me use the method here: th-cam.com/video/4Sofcy8msE0/w-d-xo.html
      To dismount I put my left foot down and swing my right up and over. I am not super flexible (trying to improve that with yoga currently) but it still hasn't been a problem. I'll make sure next bike ride video I record I include a dismount as well. I don't think I've done that yet.
      I hope this helps!

      Hi Tithi - I recommend going to the Priority website and take a look at their sizing. The main thing you'll want to measure is your inseam, and then check the measurements they have posted of the bicycles. I am a little under 5'4" and I bought the Small size of the 600. Even if we were the same height our inseam could vary though. You can also email them to see what they think once you have your measurements. I emailed them with some questions before I purchased and they were very responsive.
