    Watching your vids is relaxing. You have great audio. Its satisfying hearing all the sounds of the bags opening. The water pouring. Its weird. But its very pleasant watching your reviews.

    One thing if you ever find that one or two sugars isn't enough for the coffee as you prepare it, prepare the coffee without any sugar added, take a little sip of the unsweetened coffee, then add the sugar, To your tongue it will seem super sweet since your brain compares the two. (I heard about this trick a while ago and it's good for cutting down the sugar you put in your coffee, or in this case, if you don't have a lot of sugar to go around)

    I wonder if XMRE quality control knew that sun flower seeds were the main ingredient to the mix. The other ingredients cost more.

    I keep wondering when I watch your videos... when you're inserting the activated FRH in the cardboard sleeve... wouldn't it be easier to slide the sleeve over the folded top of the FRH instead of sliding the FRH in bottom first?

    • @gschultz9
      @gschultz9  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Blastmaster1972 Good point. It might be. The only problem is that when you have a fully-activated FRH handling the bottom (where the heating elements are) can get pretty painful when the heat is cranking. I like to make sure all the elements are activated before putting the whole thing in a box or sleeve. I've had too many times where I didn't check, one or two elements didn't get enough water exposure to activate, and I had a less-than-fully-heated entree after waiting 15 minutes.

    I can get real MREs and TOTMs but I've found that the vegetarian menus are often tastier than the meat options. I suspect that meat needs more preservatives, so their taste is a lot less prevalent in the veggie meals. Anyway, the cheese tortellini is one of my favorites, too. Keep it up, Glen.

    • @gschultz9
      @gschultz9  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Rocky Raab That's an interesting idea Rocky. Makes sense. I always kind of thought they simply amped up the flavor aspect a bit to "make up for" the lack of meat in a dish for non-vegetarians, or something like that.

    Keep the reviews coming friend !! Great review as always. Peace, Magnum, John. P.S. , I got an older MRE, at the gun show last year, Cheese Tortellini, only from 2010, put had already turned to mush,lol. Yours looked much better. Peace.

    • @gschultz9
      @gschultz9  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      MultiMagnum62 Thank you John! Sorry to hear about the mush. I'm surprised to hear that a five-year-old Cheese Tortellini would have turned to mush. I suppose it can partly be explained by the fact that it's pasta based--and pasta can only sit in sauce for so long before turning to mush, and it also makes me wonder what kind of conditions the seller stored the MRE in...

    I like this MRE :) . I haven't tried the veggie tortellini, but I enjoy that the PB spread and the nut/fruit mix goes well with the dessert, so well :) . It could do with some red pepper powder, or something, though.

    • @gschultz9
      @gschultz9  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jaybird196 Yes, I think most commercial MREs would benefit from putting a little hot sauce or crushed red pepper in the accessory packs like the genuine ones do.

    Gschultz, I have a question, what was your favorite MRE?

  • @Andovarius
    @Andovarius 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    XMRE has done some good things, but I think they have a ways to go before they become a top provider.
    Got any camping trips planned for this summer? Haven't seen an outdoor review or a cameo or two of the wife/ girls in a while. Unless they want nothing to do with you and those stinky FRHs!

    • @gschultz9
      @gschultz9  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Andovarius I think XMRE's improvements have brought them pretty close to the level of the top commercial MREs (though the price is still an issue). I've never seen any commercial ones that can really compare to the genuine ones of course. I'd like to do more outdoor videos, but it's harder now that I'm living in the city. The girls would love to do more videos, but I haven't really had the chance to get something together with them. My wife would prefer NOT to be in any more (to say the least!).

    Being a vegetarian looks like i don't have much choice... Thanks for the show!

    • @gschultz9
      @gschultz9  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Will Hornbuckle It's not a bad choice for a vegetarian menu. And don't forget that genuine MREs have a more variety in veggie meals. There are always four veggie varieties among the 24 menus (currently that includes Vegetarian Taco Pasta, Spicy Penne Pasta, Cheese Tortellini and Ratatouille). True, they're mostly pasta dishes (making them a bit monotonous) but at least they're there! I actually kind of miss the Veggie Burger in BBQ Sauce, which I kind of liked

    • @blitzb4
      @blitzb4 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We actually eat vegetables also lol It would be cool with some dried Green beans and mashed potatoes... Maybe some baked beans... Corn and carrots... Sweet potatoes...
      When i make meals in my canteen cup it is usually mashed potatoes with any of the above mixed in.
      The above seems to be common rationality that a non meat eater making a "vegetarian" meal for sale is we MUST have a main course also like Tortellini which is pasta without the meat lol when not really... We just need veggies...
      I dunno maybe what i like wouldn't sell...

    • @gschultz9
      @gschultz9  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Will Hornbuckle I'm sure it would sell. Unfortunately the government makes such a high volume of rations that I guess they can't really cater to very specific tastes. It is strange that most if not all of the MRE veggie menus are pasta based. I could easily see a vegetarian getting sick of them very quickly.

    • @Jaybird196
      @Jaybird196 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Grace Cheng Consumer brand. I realize you haven't asked my opinion, but XMRE seems to me to be the best overall option of the consumer brands, and in some respects, even beats that of government manufacture.

    • @sandobi1

    • @Jaybird196
      @Jaybird196 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Grace Cheng You're welcome :) . What is it about the "cookie kibble", as you call it, that puts you off, exactly?

    • @sandobi1
      @sandobi1 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jaybird196 seems more difficult and less satisfying to get thru cookie crumbles vs a whole cookie. I guess I don't see the payoff.

    • @Jaybird196
      @Jaybird196 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Grace Cheng Hmm, I suppose it could be more difficult, depending on one's individual expectations. Some people eat on the move (for whatever reason), and being able to grab a few bits (roughly constituting a single bite), as opposed to a whole cookie in hand, might be situationally more desirable. Also, hard, brittle cookies often fall apart anyway, due to rough handling, and other conditions. Maybe the thought process behind their design was something like, "hey, since they're probably going to fall apart anyway, why not cut to the chase?" . Further, some derive a reasonable degree enjoyment/satisfaction from eating small amounts of food slowly, as opposed to large amounts quickly. I hope that helps, Grace :) .

      Takerfan4ever303 I would too! Unfortunately I don't really have a good source to get some of the rare and hard-to-find international rations. I also don't have the cash needed to import some of these examples. Whenever I DO manage to get my hands on something more exotic than a simple U.S. MRE I definitely want to share the experience by reviewing it! We'll see what the future holds I guess.

    Are these XMREs commercial or genuine?

    • @gschultz9

      Kasey Barnard They are a commercial company. Most of the components are genuine MRE ones (as is the case with all the major commercial MRE companies). XMRE and Meal Kit Supply has done a good job of making their products appear pretty close to what a genuine MRE looks like.
