Why can’t I shrink my C drive - 100% solved!

There are mainly some reasons when you cannot shrink C drive such as,
Dump Files:
A Kernel Memory Dump contains all the memory in use by the kernel at the time of the crash. This kind of dump file is significantly smaller than the Complete Memory Dump. Typically, the dump file will be around one-third the size of the physical memory on the system.
System protection:
System Protection is a feature that helps protect your system and personal files. It takes snapshots, called Restore Points of your files. You can then later restore these files if a virus, person, or anything else deletes or damages them.
System files:
A system file in computers is a critical computer file without which a computer system may not operate correctly. These files may come as part of the operating system, a third-party device driver or other sources.
Hibernation:
Hibernation is different from Sleep Mode; Hibernation Mode goes one step further. Instead of saving your session in RAM (which will be lost without power supply), hibernation saves it to hard drive then shuts down the desktop.
Paging file:
A paging file is a hidden, optional system storage file on a hard disk. Only one is installed on each hard disk, although more can be added. The paging file can support system crashes and expand the amount of system-committed memory, or virtual memory, that a system can back.
So, to be able to shrink C drive, the best and harmless method is to disable the paging file temporarily and after you shrink C drive, then you have to turn back the paging file on.
How to disable the Paging file?
• Go to properties of This PC
• Click on the Advance Tap
• Under Performance, click on settings
• Under virtual memory, click on change
• Untick the automatically manage paging file size….
• Select C drive you aim to disable its paging file
• Now, at the bottom, you will see the option which says, “No Paging File”, put a checkmark on it
• Now check if you can shrink the C drive
• If you see the paging file is still there, refresh the Disk Management window page or reopen Disk Management window page or restart your pc.
• Now you should be able to shrink the C drive.
• If you see the paging file is still there, you might have not turned off the paging file correctly, just go back and do it again and follow.

Hi, I have a 1TB HDD and I shrinked it only till 250GB, and the windows is not allowing to do more space to shrink still I have above 400GB free space in C drive, and I want some more partition of it, what should I do?

I did all that and it still said volume 0.
unfortunately dd not work for me. Followed all steps and restarted but still no shrink. Trying to install windows 8 and need to create a partition. - currently have 7

Hi, even after turning off the page file, there is still zero as available volume for shrinking and I have 210 gb as empty space on c drive, what do I do to resolve the issue?
Hi Salman. First, please check if you do not have more than 4 partitions on the same Disk. If you have 4 partitions, you need to delete one and merge it to nearby partition and then try to shrink C drive. If it doesn't help, please send the screenshot of disk management to our FB messenger, we will help you there in better way.

Please be careful, disabling the page file is not guaranteed to be safe, it can cause instability issues! such was the case for me. But still great video!

@@sidattnh To be honest. When the computer is not accessible, there is not any solution except you must go to any computer service person.
I cant create new volume after i shrink may D drive notification says "operation selected will convert the selected basic disk to dynamic disk . Converting will not be able to start installed operating systems from any volume on the disk except the current boot volume"
After that " Yes"
Notification says "the selected GPT formatted disk contains a partition which is not on type PARTITION_BASIC_DATA_GUID' and is both preceeded and followed byba partition of type "PARTITION _BASIC_DATA_GUID".

Hey, i turned off page file and shrinked storage but i restarted my pc without turning on page file

Yes, either extend or delete/uninstall some apps you don't use to make more space on C drive.
i was following that tutorial but after restart the shrink menu still cant give me more than 1gb for split, how to fix it

I tried each step as you described here but when i tried to shrink i am able to shrink about 130 gb but the system is showing that " there is not enough space available on the disc to complete this operation "

Hi Vishal, Please see below:
1. Not Enough Space for the Specified Operation: If you are trying to extend a volume without having enough unallocated space, you will be prompted with the said error message.
2. Disk Management Utility Error: In some cases, the error message appears because the Disk Management utility is not able to detect the changes made to the partitions. In such a case, you will have to rescan the disks. To rescan the disk, go to action tap on the top and select rescan disk.
3. MBR Partition Limit: By default, Windows uses the MBR partition system. The MBR partition system is an old system that can allow only 4 partitions at a time, therefore, if you already have 4 partitions, you won’t be able to create a new one.

Oh my God, thank you, before watching this tutorial once I set the amount of my C drive I couldn't change it, although I had a lot of free space in C drive, I had to reinstall windows, thank you alot.
