The only reasons you would want a Hard Disk Drive is: 1) To write/read large data "linearly" in the most efficient manner like Audio/Video. 2) For Archiving in general. Hard Disk Drives last a LOT longer than SSDs in use and storage. Nowadays, the OS drive and general data drives should always be a SATA SSD at the very least or a M.2 for best performance for sure.
Spinning drives are fine for data and personal files, expecially if you have a lot or bulky files. I don't think any system manufacturers should be putting the OS onto a spinning drive. If that means they can't produce that super cheap $150 net laptop, fine, make it $170 with an SSD and make your customers happy. The performance drop It really not worth the little savings between the two in the small size that those budget laptops get (120 to 256 GB)
@@javaman2883 the problem is you can get a 500 sata ssd for $30. No excuse for why something like the asus vivobook to have a 1tb had for 600 something dollars.
Appreciate your insight into what they actually do and why disabling htem is no big deal. SysMain was the culprit on my computer. I was CONSTANTLY hovering at 100, to the point where the computer was becoming unusable. Disable SysMain and it IMMEDIATELY dropped down to hovering around zero (albeit still bouncing around.) By far the best explanation how to fix your pc. My laptop is already super fast from up to an hour waiting to open a darn program. Thank you very much.
Honestly, the single biggest improvement I found on older Win 10 PC's regarding high disk usage, especially at startup, upgrade to an SSD. Less then $100 and breathes new life into older PC's and laptops. That and bump RAM to 8GB. Those two changes alone help dramatically.

This video is great to follow along with and gain understanding. A+ video. I still have high disk usage - however disabling the driver in the last tip solved the hang-up problem that had me wondering why my disk usage was high in the first place. I'll update to an SSD to keep up with the times, but for now this totally solved my problem of browser tabs needing 5-10 minutes to load after re-start.
Just so you know, the all the High Performance plan does is is stop the CPU from idling at a lower clock speed, it does not affect disk usage at all. I would actually recommend leaving it on balanced unless you know that you definitely need it on the High Performance plan. Leaving it on high performance will likely significantly reduce battery life on laptops when just doing basic tasks like browsing the web or watching videos where the CPU is likely barely being used anyway.
Disabling those first two applications you mentioned dropped my disk usage from 100% to 3-5% at idle. I built this PC and it is a miracle it works at all because I am a dumbass, but your expertise has helped me tremendously. Thank you.
That's probably because sysmain incorrectly guessed the program you would be loading, and since you loaded a different program it took more time to load. With sysmain stopped no such programs were loaded and so it loaded in normal time and appeared to be faster (Not sure if I'm correct though but maybe this is the reason)
I had my pc on so I thought why not just give it a try. Checked task manager, showed 80-95% disk usage fluctuating. I did the exact same thing he said as disabled sysmain. I literally have my pc on 3-5% disk usage wtf? xD
Thank you so much! My computer was crashing all the time and was so slow. I just found out today, that my disk % was at a 100. I disabled the first two on your list, and now it is at about 2% and 59% when I play a relatively heavy game (for my PC at least). And it surely helped with the speed a lot. Looking forward to see if it has helped with the crashing in the long run too (or if I need a new PSU), but it has not crashed since.
You still getting those crashes? Or was getting a new psu what solved the problem for you? I recently started getting crashes whislt playing games as well (crashes i wasnt getting one month ago)
@@Canestri_i The disk use came back to a 100% after some time. I got a new PSU as the crashing came back as well. I haven't have it crash since then, but I got an SSD bc the HDD was still soooo slow. Now everything runs like a charm and boots up 30 sek. instead of 10 min.
I used your video yesterday to clean up one active Windows 10 system and another system on a backup PC of mine. Great information... worked like a charm. Thank you. 👍
Wow. You are absolutely amazing! I love the way you explain things (as other comments have also mentioned). I've been looking for a solution to my disk issues for a long while now and only this video has helped so far. Subbing for sure!
I've just followed the tips accordingly, and it worked for me. My disk usage dropped from 100% to 7%, sometimes it tends to increase but just for a while, however, I can say that the problem was solved. Thanks
Thank you! This was a great video. You were clear, consice, and easy to follow. The 100% disk useage has been plaguing me and making it difficult to get important work done. Fixing the driver bug was what resolved it for me. I know I need to just give in and buy an SSD but in the meantime this has made life much easier.
In lieu of this being posted again, I mentioned having 100% disk read issues and a whole layer of wacky problems related to kernal issues. Long story short, repairing Windows 10's system files completely fixed the disk usage problem. Whatever it was that was corrupt somehow some way was entirely fixed after repairing the OS. Its pretty ironic actually, that's usually the last resort method I choose after exhausting everything else and even that rarely works. Usually formatting is the end point. Basically, if you've tried everything here I would highly recommend just trying the most obvious thing outside of windows update and that is just using the repair function for the OS.
Awesome tips! I have been having trouble with my lenovo laptop and the Sysmain thing did the trick for me . From 95+ disk usage to almost 35% now. Thanks so much!!!

Great video, I've done a lot of the work you've demonstrated here for helping friend's & family to lower their 100% disc usage, but the regedit one was new to me. Hence, I haven't had 100% success with every time I've encountered the problem. One minor, if I may; regedit, pronounced rej-edit - as in, registry.. not reg as in regular.
How it's working for me: Will update until complete Tip 1. I have disabled the first two services, my disk usage went down to 98%-100% instead of always being at 100% I won't delete Windows Search as I need that. Tip 2. This is redundant for me as this was already being used on my computer. Tip 3. I now see that I had 5 pending installs with an additional Windows feature update waiting for the others, Let's see how this does After updating Windows and Uninstalling Steam, (it was using the most disk space) and changing my browser to Firefox, my disk took around 10-15 minutes before it started to hover at 0%-15% My CPU was also working at 30% when idle, it is now working at 2%-4% This has helped me so much, thank you for making this video P.S. when you want something gone from the computer, like an app. Don't delete it, go into settings, go into apps and Uninstall it. It won't go away if you delete it, I think that just puts it into a sort of sleep mode, Uninstall it will delete it for good I deleted Steam but found that it was using around 5 MB/s so I then deleted it. While I was making this comment, I glanced over at my computer and noticed the disk shoot back up to 100% That sucks... Edit: It's fine now, it's gone down to 1%-40%
I didn't know sysmain is the old prefetch. It was the main culprit. Stopped it and now disk usage stopped running at 100% on start up and quickly dropped way down. Also stopped the snooping telemetry service. thanks.

The biggest issue with a lot of PC's lack of disk space has to do with the tiny SSD hard drives manufacturers put in many of them. My HP Omen came with 2 hard drives, a 100GB SSD for the core the operating system, and a 1TB 7200 mechanical drive for storage. 100GB is way too small. Things are getting better though. My new HP Pavillion has a 250GB drive, not optimal, but sure beats the lousy 100GB with the old PC.

Thank you.
This guy is awesome it lowered my disk usage but im still going to get a ssd because its worth it
Glad it worked out for you
I've just followed the tips accordingly, and it worked for me.
Thank you so much... Now I know wtf these services do and not just disable them blindly...
Glad it worked out for you.
Thank you so much! After so many videos, your tips helped me to take my disk usage from 100% to 4% 😊
1:40 on and especially calling out Microsoft for their Windows malware earned an instant sub from me. Accurate and useful info. Thanks.
Thank you. Because none of these except the last one worked for me.
Awesome tips! I have been having trouble with my lenovo laptop and the Sysmain thing did the trick for me . From 95+ disk usage to almost 35% now. Thanks so much!!!
Glad it helped.
You did an EXCELLENT job with this video. Easy to watch, clearly explaining what you are doing and why. Well done. Fixed my issue with editing the registry regarding that storehci driver.
The content was impressive. Straight to the point, clear concise explanation on what we doing , and it works too..damn i was late to find this channel. Thanks!
Glad it helped.
I had already looked into this quite a bit and got my disk from crawling at 100% constantly to about 75%. As soon as I stopped the first service (Microsoft malware) you mentioned, it hit 0% and has been staying in the single digits. Thanks, man!
"The performance is more important to me than the battery life"
Most enthusiast sentence a person can say 😂 I love it, thanks for the tips I'm going to do them all, except maybe the search +sub
since their latest update my laptops fan is spinning like crazy. I can't imagine how much power windows wastes on computers across the world. So much for being a
green company.
Generally fans are controlled by manufacturer’s code not Microsoft’s
@@TayG-y9q the fans react to temperature so if windows is making your computer work harder that will create more heat which will increase fan usage.
Using your Tips has made Life so much easier and Eliminated the 100% disc usage issues I had, although I know that whenever possible Microsoft will try putting in back, at least I know how to deal with issues and appreciate your help
Glad it helped.
I just upgraded to and ssd for my home recording studio pc. I was floored how fast it boots compared to the hdd. I got a 500gb WD blue at Walmart for 59 bucks. Best 59 bucks I’ve spent on a computer.
Very true. I will not even build a computer today without an SSD.
Yes, your right but when you've said it one way for as many years as I have the chances of breaking the habit are unlikely. 😂😂
How it's working for me: Will update until complete
Tip 1. I have disabled the first two services, my disk usage went down to 98%-100% instead of always being at 100%
I won't delete Windows Search as I need that.
Tip 2. This is redundant for me as this was already being used on my computer.
Tip 3. I now see that I had 5 pending installs with an additional Windows feature update waiting for the others, Let's see how this does
After updating Windows and Uninstalling Steam, (it was using the most disk space) and changing my browser to Firefox, my disk took around 10-15 minutes before it started to hover at 0%-15%
My CPU was also working at 30% when idle, it is now working at 2%-4%
This has helped me so much, thank you for making this video
P.S. when you want something gone from the computer, like an app. Don't delete it, go into settings, go into apps and Uninstall it. It won't go away if you delete it, I think that just puts it into a sort of sleep mode, Uninstall it will delete it for good
I deleted Steam but found that it was using around 5 MB/s so I then deleted it.
While I was making this comment, I glanced over at my computer and noticed the disk shoot back up to 100%
That sucks...
Edit:
It's fine now, it's gone down to 1%-40%
I didn't know sysmain is the old prefetch. It was the main culprit. Stopped it and now disk usage stopped running at 100% on start up and quickly dropped way down. Also stopped the snooping telemetry service. thanks.
I've disabled that service on quite a few computers now, at least 1-2 dozen now.. Mostly Win 7/8 that upgraded to Win 10.
Get an SSD, put your OS in it and put your data on HDD.
Thank you this has been really helpful my PC was working at hundred percent disk usage and I was so frustrated about that but thank you your video really helps me a lot and thank you
Nicely ,clearly explaining
Work 100%
Honestly

Beautiful bro, beautiful! This video is the mash-up of all those tips scattered on TH-cam! All in one.
But does disabling automatic pagefile monitoring and setting it to manual also help?
It helps a little. Essentially anything you can do to stop Windows from reading or writing to the disk will help a little.
Update : I ran chkdsk on C Drive, it took 4 hours and the problem is gone!
Like Magic ✨✨😂
I'm so happy now

Had the Storaci Issue and never would've gotten the help elsewhere on the internet, thanks a ton!
Thanks for awsome video man, I also really liked the last part that the way you spoke so sincerely
This video is the best video I have ever seen, well presented!!!
Thank you.
I switched these off last year and now they are back on. Had to go back to this. Great video. Thanks.
This dude is a legend 🙌🏾💯
Thanks for the help! Have an extra sub on your computer journey, and good luck!
Awesome, thank you!
Thank you. I don't know which step help me but one of them did. I've seen some people in these comments say none of these steps help their problem but I'm glad I'm not one of those people. I'm glad to report that all of these tips still work in 2022.
Step 1: Walk into a new customer.
Step 2: Upgrade a few disks to SSD.
Step 3: Bask in the glow of being treated like a god.
It's true. 😂😂
System main was my problem. God Bless you
Glad it worked out for you.
Hey, I watched multiple vids and non of them helped me but this one took my 100 percent all the way down to 4 percent. Thank you for your incredible tutorial and this means that it still works atm
Glad it helped!
Video starts at 1:00
Thanks! With 2 of your applications, looks like I gained a gig in ram!
Wow, that's a happy unintended consequence. Glad it worked out for you.
Dude, I watch like 5 other videos before I found yours. Yours was literally the only one that did anything. Thanks
Had this problem for years over three laptops. I tried literally EVERYTHING any could think of.
How I fixed it? Installed an SSD... There's no way around it
SSDs are definitely the best way to solve it.
I knew as soon as I saw that beard I could trust you thank you so much disabling those first 3 things have fixed everything I really need to get a better harddrive tho tbh
All wise men have beards. 😂😂
Glad it worked out for you.
@@CyberCPU agreed all wise men do have beards
And yes it's gone down from 100 to like 40 which is still awful but it's not taking 5 minutes to do a single click how 🤣
The step involving the IDE Controllers worked for me. Thank you so , so much. You have no idea how relieved I am to finally fix this!
amazing, the way u explain. !!subscribed !!
Thanks.
OMG I WENT FROM 100% DISC USUAGE TO 1% WITH THE FIRST THREE THINGS HE MENTIONED! “IF U HAVEN’T SUBBED DO IT RIGHT NOW!”
ME THE SAME!!!!!!!!
Calm tf down
I tried everything and none of the solutions were working but the moment I disabled the windows search service my disk space went from 100 to 1 percent
Thank you so much for this video ❤
Give this man a medal
Nice find with the driver issue. You could have pasted the path in regedit as opposed to scrolling to find the string by the way 😉
I only today found your site and have already learnt more than I know what to do with. I'm looking forward to checking out your back catalogue. Thank you.
This channel has way too few subs. Good info as usual.
Thank you.
my disk usage went from 60 something to around 5, thank you so much this feels so satisfying
Glad it helped.
Your video brought my disk usage from 100% to 5-12%, thank you! You really helped alot!
I had this issue , when my laptop was newly purchased suddenly behaved laggy.
I opened up that Task Manager saw Windows Defender wants to protect my laptop while I'm working 😂, Defender was scanning in background like crazy !😂
they wanted to make sure your laptop was secure, by cripping your ability to use it.
Yeah, I think manufacturers are doing that to get rid of their old stock of spinning discs.
Literally just went from 100% to 0%. Incredible. Thank you so much!
You’re a beast bro!!
Thanks a lot!
Your welcome.
Joke of the day: He has disabled his "beard trim" function.
Yes, that I definitely have.
Bro, you can' t imagine how you helped me with this video, thanks a bunch, I was achieving in more than an hour what I was usually achieving in 20 minutes, No Hanging anymore !
Thank you Sir, have a great days to you too.
Your welcome
great man. great content. subbing cause you deserve the community
Dude. Finally i find someone that provides very complete instructions to help my friends and family with this problem (when MS pushes win10 to old pcs, it is a nightmare). Thank you! Subscribed as well!
OH MY FUCKING GOD that bug fixing saved my life.
My disk usage dropped from 100% to 5% almost instantly after I changed the reg value to 0.
What a lifesaver. Thank you good sir.
