That will give you an emulsion - in this video I'm demonstrating for oily gels so it depends on what you want to make :)
Hi. Thank you so much for this information. I had a question about this gel; I tried making a thicker oil base with a gel by adding other oils, but they don't mix well and separates into 2 layers. Is there something I can do to prevent the separation? Thank you

There is too much oil in these products to feel good on the hair - but they feel fantastic on the skin as leave on or wash off!

Hi Belinda: can you do a video about saponified snow creams like Hazeline Snow and what are your thoughts about its slightly alkaline pH at the end?
I don't like the very alkaline pH of natural saponification, there are much better, more skin compatible materials available. Sorry you might not like the answer but that is my answer.
thank you for the educational video. I was wondering if you have tried adding behenyl alcohol and make a balm emulsion with sucragel q. I tried sapougel Q with oils/butters and behenyl alcodol and it didn't work. I can't find info if the alcohols and the sapougels or similar type of gels are actually not competitive with fatty alcohols. thank you
You can make an emulsion with sucragel, please search for my videos on sucragel for an example, but you can't make an oily gel using sucragel and fatty alcohols. Hi J Cote do you mean more like a balm? You would need some waxy materials to get more of a balm - however in this video, the oily gel I create will not run, so while its not a balm, it suits a jar. Not sure if that is what you are trying to create but for balms you do need waxy or more solid materials.

No, you can't use that like this material. It is a wax.

This is a really helpful video thanks! What is the maximum size batch you could make with an overhead stirrer and that propeller you use in the video? I have been working with this for about a year and each time I used my stick blender instead of my overhead mixer, it 'breaks' and no matter how much I stir with my overhead, it never comes back together again. You mentioned that you can use a stick blender; can you give some tips?
Hi Julie, similar tips to this video - at in very small amounts at the start and DON'T add any more until you see it is very glossy. I have used a stick blender and it still works well but adding in small amounts and not adding more until it turns glossy is essential. I hope this helps. If it does separate, pour off the separated oil layer and start again - seriously, it still works!
Can you use a magnetic stirrer instead of the overhead one?
No, it does not give anywhere near enough mixing speed or power. Does Sucragel go well with butters, or is it only made for liquid oils?
You could mix a small amount of butter with liquid oils and add your butters that way.

if we wanted to add a butter we would obviously need to heat the oil...is it okay to mix a warm oil mixture to the Sapogel? Or is it only cold process?

What is the alternative equipment if I don't have a propeller mixer and need to make a small batch of gelled oil (160oz)???
You can use a stick blender but it is harder to get it just right - just remember to pour off any separated components and try again until you get the technique right. Watch our video on how to fix sucragel.
Can this be used as on lips? As a gel lip mask ?
No, it turns into a milk when wet, so if you lick your lips it will turn milky and come straight off
I would love to use this, however, I cannot use oils on my face. I have acne prone, breakout prone skin. Can I do an oil free formula?

No - its too high shear. Do not use a homogenizer, it won't work.

No need for an additional preservative?
Not when prepared like this for oily gels, no - but if you use it as an emulsifier in creams/lotions (I have a video like that coming out soon) then yes a preservative is needed. There is not enough water present in the oily gel to be an issue, but in other product forms you do need a preservative. Happy formulating!
