I 'm actually struggling with phase separation too while formulating a hand washing gel with hydroxyethylcellulose and decylglucoside (I used to add the hydroxyethylcellulose first because it's only soluble in water )and the solution separates into two layers one thick and the second phase is water but when I add citric acid it turns transparent and homogenous but the ph is around 4 which is very low. I hope that adding the decylglucoside with water first will solve the problem. Thank you!

I work with waterborne paints and printing inks. And it´s nice to see that cosmetics is so similar in many respects. For the bubbles, I´d go with the traditional dimethicone oil, like 0.01%. When would you add it? I'd say at the end. Great tutorial.

Wow thank u so much for this video. I am having the exact problem that you mentioned abt the gum separating. I add a premix solution of HEC gum into the natural surfactants and the gum layer became a separate layer that floats above. I will definitely try your method of adding HEC directly into the beaker after natural surfactants have been added.
I havd a question though. I have solubilized fragrance oils with polysorbate 20 and also other fruit extracts. When do I need to add these solubilized fragrance oils and extracts ? After the HEC has combined with the surfactants to form a clear gel ? Thanking you again for taking valuable time to reply 😊.
You would normally add your solubilised oils as early into the surfactant mixture as possible. This helps ensure they remain solubilised and stable throughout the shelf life. So solubilise them first, then add to the surfactants, then add remainder water and water soluble ingredients, then your gum. I have tried making a very similar formula using the same method you used, but instead of xanthan gum I have used sclerotium gum. For some reason the formulation did not thicken up this time and phase separation could be seen after a day (there is a transparent layer above and a turbid layer beyond). I had made this formula before hydrating the gum prior to adding the surfactants. Do you think xantan and scleroitum gums work differently?
Yes - sclerotium gum takes a lot longer to hydrate, so what has happened is you've added it, its settled, then hydrated slowly as a separate layer - rather than xanthan which is much faster, and hydrates while you're mixing and keeping everything homogenous. Hope this helps.
How do you know what the proper ph should be, also how can you adjust the ph balance?

Is this appropriate for a shower gel or shampoo? I’m looking to create a more “natural” shower gel or shampoo for my brand.

When I make my body washes, I noticed my surfactants have less lather from either the fragrance oil or the liquid crothix that I use. Can you suggest a method or ingredient that will increase the lather in my formula?

Is it possible to use xanthan gum as a surfactant to 'emulsify' oil to make a cleansing oil that can be rinsed off with water? I tried with no success using an old batch of guar gum and am unsure whether the same will happen with xanthan gum. Thanks.
No, you need the surfactant to provide the wetting, spreading and wash off action, otherwise its just a gel.
Can't find that Xanthan gum anywhere. Any advice? Can I use zepimax zen as alternative? Thanks
Sepimax Zen is not natural; I love it for electrolyte rich formulas but its not natural. So no, you couldn't use it in this formula as this is about making a natural product.

xanthum gum does it decrease the suds in soap? What do you think about crothix liquid in a liquid watery soap with a 9.5 ph
Xanthan gum does not decrease suds - in most cases, it actually increases foam. If your soap has a pH of 9.5, it would be a traditionally saponified material - xanthan gum doesn't suit this high pH. Crothix liquid should not be used in formulas with a pH above 9. Yes you could, please prepare a sample to check it is stable over time though but in theory it should suspend it well.

What is the general ratio of Xanthan gum to glycerin?

You also generally need enough glycerin to create a smooth slurry - not clumpy - otherwise it is too hard to get into the formulation. Happy formulating!

I am mixing just sodium coco sulfate (1%) with water for foamy soap and my hands feel so dry almost harsh. I have been trying to add some oils (0,5%) or sorbitol/glycerin (0,5%). But still the same effect. Is there any chance for any ingredient (best in powder) that would make the skin nice? It would be great if in low concentration and in powder 🙏

You don't want to go much higher than 6 - 6.5 in any case, and yes it would still work at that pH.

Any substitutes for xanthan gum?
Hi Tasnim, yes, you could use sclerotium for example, it also makes a reasonably clear solution but I find the special grade of xanthan I use in this formula works best. Its worth the investment for the results and you can use it across other formulas as well. Usually around 5.5 but it depends on which surfactant and preservatives you are using - you may need to adapt your formula to suit the surfactants, preservatives or other actives you use in the formula to ensure stability and good shelf life. Happy formulating!

Can we change xanthan with salt ?

Can someone please tell me how we are supposed to be able to get these ingredients as aspiring formulators when they are only sold to big companies? It's seems like a joke really, how are we supposed to start our brand when we can't even get a hold of the ingredients?
