I remember standing on the platform at Reading, train spotting. This was from 1957 to 1963. I still have my Ian Allan ABC books from those long ago days. Semi retired in PICTON, South Island, New Zealand.
For those of us. Who would rush down to the railway lines after school to catch the Glasgow Inverness flyer secretly hoping it had a name as well as a number, indeed praying it was a first time sighting to underlined it in my book brought so much joy,and for those of you who are criticizing don’t try to understand because you never will.........regards....steam man.🚂
As a child in Australia I lived a few kilometers from a railroad. I would often fall asleep to the sounds of a steam engine huffing and puffing and blowing its whistle in the distant. It’s one of my fondest memories from my early life. Thank you for a beautifully shot video (or was it film, which is even more impressive!). From California.
This is a work of art. I love the beginning: looking down the track surrounded by 19th century English infrastructure, listening to English fauna in the background, all of it setting the mood. And then, ever so faintly, we here that un-mistakable sound, building to a crescendo as she comes into view. Beautiful, just beautiful.
I've read some of the comments about the "wasted" time at the beginning of this video and personally, the soundscape at the beginning builds up the drama of the scene. I thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience as it showed the main event to its full extent. A steam loco working hard and driven well is more than a visual experience- it is sound as well and the echo of the exhaust from the tunnel and bridges is very much part of it. Those who would've cut out the "wasted" time are missing the point IMHO. If they had their way, the video would start with the loco 30 metres away from the camera and end once it went out of shot. Each to their own I say...
Well said...I've seen photographers 'snap' the engine and scurry off before the train has even begun to pass by - no doubt to rush off to the next location to shoot it again! Savour the moment I say - listen to it getting nearer - and listen to it fade away! Cheers, Will.
Reminds me of the Great Central going through the Aylestone Meadows Leicester. My Dads allotment use to back on to the railway and the sound and sight of the steam trains coming through and then as the sound faded away the sound of the skylarks and other wildlife would slowly return to fill the void until the next steam train........Just beautiful memories for me of English childhood summer days.......
I remember coming to this park as a kid and watching the trains go by. After what happened in 2018 they got fences around all of the walls so you cant see as well as you used to :(
Oh to have been there just for those few brief moments to see this magnificent living breathing mechanical beast doing its thing and passing by at full throttle! What an experience and what a thrill!
In India heritage runs with vintage steam engines are organized in the winter months. But unfortunately they don't use the old coaches. I believe the old coaches were mostly made of wood and are either decayed beyond repair or are not safe to run anymore. Many are displayed in various museums though
My only disappointment on my Orient Express trip was that we were pulled by an electric engine! Would have been so “Agatha Christie” if there was a Steam Engine pulling the consist of restored passenger wagons. I did ride a lot of European steam trains when I was stationed in Germany in the 70’s though! Nothing like the distinctive whistle sound of the Daylight 4449, with smoke billowing along the engine top to the streamline cars behind. A special visual treat on the horseshoe curve just north of San Luis Obispo, CA. When one is in the observation car at the rear and better still if it is from the outdoor platform of “Private Varnish”
I remember lying in bed and listening to the noises from the shunting yard as a 4 or 5 year old. A couple of years later I was lucky enough to have a footplate ride on Mallard on the turning triangle at Grantham.
Oh that 1:20 is just fabulous. It gives the tremendous sense of the impending - you can really feel it. Provides a lot, you're listening for every sound, not hearing it yet, just like the people gathered for the real event! And then the thing arrives! Wow! Makes it great! The force of the stack-blast against the undersides of the bridges is really impressive. Gives you a sense of the power being brought to bear in those cylinders. Awesome!!
I've chased a lot of steam in the states and my shots tend to all look the same. I love the sound and how the engine is framed by all the bridges, great job!
Used to go to Bath a lot in the mid sixties as a young teenager with my parents and would always go on my own to Sydney Gardens with my portable transistor radio and watch the trains, warships, westerns etc and listening to music by bands like the Who and Kinks etc, happy days😊
Like 4 days ago, when me and Dad were right by the tracks, (we went back every time that a train came past!) a steam train came past, and I got so shocked! We saw ICE´s too!
It's so good to know and see so many people love and appreciate these trains.I especially like young people and kids enjoying them which is good for the future not just today.
Great little sequence, thanks for uploading! I hear that Network Rail have put up some sort of fence in Sydney Gardens now, prior to overhead electrification work, which seems a great shame.
The footage of the train was great but after I first started watching it I thought that there was something behind my monitor that had blocked the train, but after a few checks I suddenly heard the sound of the train from my speakers.
@@brianwilliams9706 It's OK, Brian. Ramu and 1000 of his close personal friends are out looking for that lost "iron". They may check "behind monitor",,,, often. Namaste,
The first 1.20 seems to be focus of much derision, cant see why it gives an opportunity to admire a mass of Victorian railway architecture lots of which which has sadly disappeared since Beeching. Steam videos are not solely about the locomotive there are many enjoyable aspects
The interesting thing is that you can pack the entire Hogwarts Magic school student body on that train! I’d say that means 180 students total. Of course, in the Great Hall there looks to be maybe twice that. But the rule is that every student arrives by that single train.
I might be wrong but we only ever see the interior of two coaches. So maybe a few of the coaches have been enchanted to have gigantic interiors to accommodate the entire student body. Or it’s just a standard train for a movie about a magical school.

Professional digital camcorders with quality images have emerged since 2005
Not quite at speed yet - but a lovely mix of sound and picture as she slowly gathers speed to emerge out of the tunnel and pass us.
Nice vantage point here and a beautiful engine at work.

Sooty, smoky smelly things. I love 'em. British engineering at its best 👍

Love the sound of it.
It's amazing that you can hear that steam loco so long before it comes into view. I guess the tunnel amplifies the sound.

No diesel at the rear, that’s because at Bristol, the steam Loco can run around its own train.
Wow, more of a technological leap than I realized between the X14 and the X15...

Loved the lens on that camera it took you from the tunnel right back to the actually camera position. Very well done
Nice footage! For all impatient viewers like me...The Train appears at around 1:25... ;-)

Not a express train, its a passanger.
For some who just catches a sight of a train and stands to watch it pass, that’s merely a technicality.
