Steam train at speed No. 251
The opposite platform at Whitchurch (Hampshire) is occupied for three minutes in any given hour - and yes, it has to occur just when 35028 'Clan Line' is hurtling past with the 'Atlantic Coast Express'. Can't blame the service train, that was on time! It's a blink and you'll miss it moment on 12 October 2024.

Swanage Railway Strictly Bulleid II 7 June 2024
มุมมอง 1255 หลายเดือนก่อน
In beautiful Purbeck countryside - Merchant Navys 35006 and 35018 doublehead the 10.45 ex Swanage - pity about the crossing two tone. Later in the day 34028 and 34053 head the 14.01 from Corfe Castle to Norden, with 34072 bringing up the rear. Finally, it's 35018 bringing the 14.56 arrival intinorden, with 34081 looking after the tail end.

A bit of Bulleid ballet, involving 35018 and 34081, and orchestrated by 33 111, before 34072 heads the 10.40 departure from Swanage on 6 June, 2024. We leave the last word to 33 111, exiting stage left, or is it right? with a sunny 34081.

To Harnham's Cross to join the birds and one man and his dog waiting for the arrival of 34072 on the the 13.34 to Norden. Then down to the platform to await 34070 Manston on the 14.14. There's time to head up to the 'sharp end' to see the token transferred to 34072 as it rumbles back towards Swanage. It's the comfortable seats after that for another run up the line, but only after watching the ...

The first two departures from Swanage, 34070 Manston at 10.00, Adams T3 No. 563 at 10.25 get things off to a good start, while 34072, 257 Squadron, prepares to take the next train.

Having watched a lacklustre Southampton (the Saints) succumb to a perky Stoke City (the Potters) I decided to lift my spirits by taking a detour via Basingstoke on the way home to see 'Clan Line' returning from Bath. I wasn't alone on the platform. A group of Blackpool (the Seasiders) supporters had just arrived from Reading, where their side had lost to the Biscuitmen - (sorry, the Royals - th...
HAYFIELD'S SHORTS - Driver experience 2
มุมมอง 777 หลายเดือนก่อน
After the enjoyable run with the SAPPER up and down the AVON VALLEY Railway in April 2019, I had the opportunity, five months later, to run along the quayside outside Bristol's MShed on PORTBURY. It should have been a train operating day, but without enough personnel, they were limited to 'driver experience' sessions. It was all pretty gentle, with lots of people about and an ice cream van park...

HAYFIELD'S SHORTS - Driver experience
มุมมอง 677 หลายเดือนก่อน
For one of those landmark birthdays, my kids treated me to a bit of 'driver experience ' on the AVON VALLEY RAILWAY, Bitton, in April 2019. It was totally brill - especially the race with the cyclist on the adjacent track - and I don't know why it hasn't seen the light of day till now. Thanks to the kids, The Sapper, driver Wilson & fireman Cowley, and Denise, who took the pics.

My vists to Bristol Temple Meads (just passing through) in 2022 were occasionally enlivened by a loco stood at a new stabling point - and a sunny evening. Here are 37425, 57307 and 60 055. All of them were ticking, clicking and wheezing away, but one of them had a great percussion beat going. Which one do you think it was - 'Concrete Bob' (37) 'Lady Penelope' (57) or 'Thomas Barnado' (60) ? Ans...
FRENCH STEAM FESTIVAL - May 2023 [6]
มุมมอง 1747 หลายเดือนก่อน
The Bank Holiday Monday was surprisingly quiet at Longueville (apart from the manic whistling and horn blowing) and it was possible to get a little closer to some of the locos in the yard. After watching a variety of departures, ending with 241 P 17 topped and tailed with 567558, I set off to catch the railcar to Montereau, little knowing that I'd soon see the 'Mountain' again.
FRENCH STEAM FESTIVAL - May 2023 [7]
มุมมอง 1747 หลายเดือนก่อน
On the final afternoon I took the 'Picasso' railcar trip to Montereau - along a freight only line. These iconic machines have an engine whirring away in what you'd think of as the driving compartment - and a driver's cubicle that protrudes through the roof! When we reached the disused station of Flamboin Gouaix, where the freight line branches off, we sat in a siding for 15 minutes. I realised,...

The first public day of the festival - and the omens weren't good when the 08.30 special train rumbled into Provins an hour late. Arrival at Longueville showed that the tracks between the platform and the heritage lines in the yard were full of modern units - so a great 'viewing area' was blocked off. Never mind... to the roundhouse, where one or two engines were simmering; and the yard... wher...

On the Sunday it was the same heritage railcar arriving at Provins for the short run to Longueville, but this time it was raining! I decided to head up to Villiers St Georges on the first excursion, topped and tailed by the 2-8-2 and the 2-8-0. Villiers St Georges was a mass of dismantled track and redundant grain silos among grass carpeted running lines and platforms. The station building had ...

Next, the loco is propelling its short rake of china clay wagons into Bodmin General, prior to heading down the line to the Parkway station. Finally, there's a trip b...

Definitely at speed there.
Excellent shot Will. She was certainly moving fast through there. Hope you are keeping well. Best wishes C&A
All the actual services are delayed or cancelled but the rolling museum is still working. Fantastic.
Speed??
THIS TRAIN GOING PAST Osborne School 🚸
Happy memories. 😊
You’re right - I should have called my web thread ‘steam trains at a particular speed’. There are even a few correspondents who think that the lead number - in this case 246 - indicates the actual speed LoL…look out for ‘Hayfield’s shorts’ instead - suitably generic - but I’m afraid I won’t be wearing them.
Well, it was certainly going at a particular speed. Just not a very fast one.
Used to go to Bath a lot in the mid sixties as a young teenager with my parents and would always go on my own to Sydney Gardens with my portable transistor radio and watch the trains, warships, westerns etc and listening to music by bands like the Who and Kinks etc, happy days😊
Dominion if NZ, that locomotive is really another member of the class, carrying that number specially fir that trip!
Why the American cow pusher style whistle, it's not Casey Jones's cannon ball express. This was never the practice on BR or pre grouping.
Slow speed!
Great Job. 👏🏼
It's so good to know and see so many people love and appreciate these trains.I especially like young people and kids enjoying them which is good for the future not just today.
Not even a whistle, miserable *od.😢
What a glorious piece of machinery.
Ранний модерн и паровоз и никаких дизельных локомотивов в хвосте. Спасибо! Когда вижу паровоз уже не думаю о теориях мироздания, мне паровоза достаточно.
You have not seen a steam train at speed until you have seen one rocking from side to side with the force of the pistons. I still remember this as a boy.
Nice. Well done SWR driver for not loitering and the acknowledgement of FS.
Gosh she was travelling, what say you? 70-80mph?
Excellent video Will. Great to see the double header with the one at the rear. Best wishes C&A
Excellent 2 videos Will. What a great gala to go to. Captured some amazing shots, and a journey in the observation coach. That must of been fantastic. Looks like you had a superb day. Hope you are all keeping well. Best wishes C&A
great video. all that smoke. bet it smelt lovely
Excellent video Will. Great coverage of the actions at Swanage. Great to see you out enjoying yourself videoing steam. Keep them coming. Hope you're all well as we are . Best wishes C&A
Glad to hear you're all well - yes, Swanage was very slippy and very steamy (especially when peering over the bridge at Swanage) - I did get up to Corfe Castle etc and that may feature if I get my act together! Best wishes, Will
Glad you like it ! It was a great run - very evocative.
Fantastic I love this! Reminds me of travelling to/from boarding school at Wilhelmshaven to Duisburg where my parents picked me up for the ride back to RAF Laarbruch during 1956-58 ; happy days they were!
Great to see the Bullieds out on the main line. Picton NZ
True or not one of these in steam day's is supposedly have touched over ,100 miles per hour a wonderful locomotive these standard 5s
There really needs to be an investigation into the term “at speed” this steamer wasn’t even out of second gear.
And another investigation into the term "train"... It only had one carriage
I remember lying in bed and listening to the noises from the shunting yard as a 4 or 5 year old. A couple of years later I was lucky enough to have a footplate ride on Mallard on the turning triangle at Grantham.
Like 4 days ago, when me and Dad were right by the tracks, (we went back every time that a train came past!) a steam train came past, and I got so shocked! We saw ICE´s too!
Half the video showed a diesel unit, the other half was the steam engine pulling just a single coach. Somewhat underwhelming.
What were you expecting? 50 Apache warriors galloping alongside on horseback trying to capture the train? Ronnie Biggs hurling mail bags off to waiting accomplices? Richard Hannay climbing along the outside to escape the police? A fist fight on top of the carriage? A maiden tied to the tracks by an evil guardian, but rescued by a square jawed strong-but-silent type? Jenny Agguter waving a red flag to bring it to a halt? Sorry for the disappointment.
Excellent video Will. Nice to see Clan Line back in action and performing well All the best C&A
Wonderful! ❤
Brilliant video Will. What a fantastic experience for you. Hope you throughiy enjoyed yourself. Best wishes C&A
What a fantastic birthday surprise. Looks like you had a wonderful day. Another milestone gone by. Best wishes C&A
WOW fantastic....
Are these locos fired with coal or oil?
Those on display mostly coal - the 141 R 840 is oil fired. The rowdy generator in this video is recharging the oil!
Excellent video Will. Well captured.. Big steam engines with stupid high pitch whistles. Hope you enjoyed your holiday. It looked very enjoyable Best wishes C&A
Excellent video Will. Very interesting unit. Probably great to travel in. Best wishes C&A
Another excellent video Will. Looks like it was a great steam gala. Enjoyable watching. Best wishes C&A
Excellent video Will. .lovely to see the steam engines in France. Looks like you had a great time there. Good on board footage. Well captured. Best wishes C&A
iHi - this lovely weather is keeping me indoors - and I'm finding time to tidy up some old loose ends! I hope you're both well and thriving. Best wishes, Will PS The French festival was a good gathering - but not the best organised...and most drivers spent most of their time whistling and blowing their horns - maddening!
I was there in 1952/3 where I learnt to love trains. (And got over the low wall to petrify my Mother.)
I can imagine her distress! Herby - come here immediately!
I remember standing on the platform at Reading, train spotting. This was from 1957 to 1963. I still have my Ian Allan ABC books from those long ago days. Semi retired in PICTON, South Island, New Zealand.

Great video outstanding share to see this video childhood memories back🌹👍
Goosebumps hearing the whistle…..
Good to see without the Oilcan on the rear

BTW: Where do I find me one of these Women who like to go with their Man to watch a steam train go by (?)
If there’s one thing I’ve learnt about watching a steam locomotive on the mainline is don’t stand on the opposite platform but I’m so glad that 450 unit left the platform before it arrived and didn’t obscure everyone’s view! 😂
