I was nervous when I started watching this, because they're both too old to play Mimi and Rodolfo but I hung in there. It doesn't matter. They both act and sing the hell out of this scene. Really good.
This one was always my favourite Boheme combi. Mirella Freni almost looks and sings if her consumption is real. Especially in the scene, when she waits outside in the snow (TV-film version). I've also got the record, still in mono. And finally the curtain is closed: finito!
And also, the best Rodolfos for me are those who sing the line "Ah, Mimi! Mia bella Mimi!" with such beauty If they don't do that line well, it spoils it for me!

Ma devo dire che Domingo, nei panni di Rodolfo, è una vera sorpresa... se la tessitura non è nelle sue corde (e si sente) lui riesce comunque a entrare talmente nell'opera da "diventare" Rodolfo. Domingo è veramente uno dei più grandi animali da palcoscenico dei nostri tempi!
Timeless. I was fortunate to see her in Rome when I was a little girl. It was my first Opera and I cried for hours. Even now, decades later this makes me cry every time. She, together with Renata Tebaldi, is my favorite Mimi.

Freni is good, even great... but... NOT in Boheme. I prefer her Desdemona, her Elisabetta, her Buterfly. She sounds too dark as Mimi, her Mimi is older, without such grace and innocence, without so big emotions... Teresa Stratas as Mimi is my favorite, or maybe also Cristina Gallardo-Domas.

Llevas razón...incluso en plenitud el primer acto le venía tirante...solía bajar el aria medio tono...pero a partir de ahí lo bordaba y lo hacia muy creible a nivel actoral...yo se la escuché en el 86 en la Zarzuela y al final medio teatro salió con lágrimas en los ojos y la otra mitad casi jajajaja.

Domingo para suplir sus carencias técnicas, lo que hacía era sobreactuar, con gestos y gemidos constantes para producir el efecto del público poco experto. También cantó Lucía años antes y fué horrible y el público aplaudió igual. Domingo nunca fué un Rodolfo de referencia.
Lucia si...ni de coña le va...pero de la mitad de la opera hasta el final...a medida que avanza la enfermedad de Mimi a mi si me gustaba...el dúo" Marcello finalmente" el dúo con Mimi "dunque propio è finita" y sobre todo el final " que a detto il medico" a mi me transmitían mucho...y no soy un loco de Domingo llevo por lo menos 20 años que no pagaría por verlo ni 10 euros....aunque reconozco q me aficioné a la opera por el...a partir del 84 más o menos...pero reconozco todos sus limitaciones y defectos jajajajajaja...en cuanto a Kraus ahí coincido al 100 % contigo.

Hace ya cerca más de 25 años los escuché cantar el Cid, obligando a cantar todas las partes corales en las que intervenía él, un tono bajo. Fué una auténtica vergüenza y las críticas fueron feroces. Este personaje es producto del marketing, en eso ha sido el rey. Ni en su tipología vocal ha sido el mejor. Tenores como Corelli, Del Mónaco, Pertile, Bergonzi etc. Han sido íntimamente mejores que él en su repertorio y en terreno Belcantista Kraus, Scippa, Gigli, Fleta..... Domingo es aprendiz de todo y maestro de nada. Un abrazo.

I heard Freni at the Met in 1989..She sang Puccini's Manon Lescaut... a SPINTO role. Her voice was large and NO problem riding over the orchestra.
