    Thank you Jennifer!

    Jennifer's instructions, telling how we should speak English, are going to help us grow for all times to come.

      Hi Hilal. What would a grammar lesson be without grammar enthusiasts like you! :)
      Here are my comments and suggestions:
      Jennifer's instructions, telling how we should speak English, are going to help us grow for all times to come.
      >> That's a reduced adjective clause. I see "telling" as a present participle. "which tell how..."

      Having done my work, I went out for a walk.
      > I see that as a reduced adverb clause. It's now an participial/adverb phrase.
      Having been taught how to bake a cake, baking one was a piece of cake for me.
      >> Repetitious, but funny! I like it. :)

      Thank you so much Jennifer!
      Your feedback means a lot to me.
      Could you please let me know if I have used the gerund phrase as an apposition correctly below:

      Thanks!

    • @Englishwithjennifer
      @Englishwithjennifer  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's correct, but I see that as a reduced adjective clause with a participle:
      Which remarks? The ones that criticized the opposition. It's arguable whether the clause is identifying or non-identifying.
      The minister's remarks, which criticized the opposition's behaviour during the debate, have been covered widely by newspapers.

      Is there any detailed lesson on apposition by you?
      Let me try a few gerund appositives:
      His assignment, editing the text, has improved his writing.
      My wish, becoming a fluent speaker, is so close to my heart.
      Today's discussion, analysing the dangers of climate change, was long due.

      I think it's safe to say that gerunds as appositives are possible, but not as common as nouns and noun phrases. We could likely find alternatives:
      The assignment requiring him to edit the text has improved his writing.
      My wish to become a fluent speaker is so close to my heart.
      Today's discussion about analysing the dangers of climate change was long due.

    I have recently taught gerunds to my class. Teaching gerunds was great. It helped students bring sentence variety.

    • @Englishwithjennifer
      @Englishwithjennifer  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Teaching simple and negative gerunds is quite easy. Then come passive and perfect forms. As I discussed at the very end of this lesson, I often run into conflicting explanations and a range of terms. Some call gerunds "nominal -ing clauses," and what I call phrases, others call clauses. It gets confusing when we get into overlapping forms with reduced adverb clauses and the formation of complements. In the end, I just want to help people understand what they hear and see, and of course, I want to help learners form clear sentences in English. If people want to use different terminology, it's okay. Take care! Happy teaching!

    • @Englishwithjennifer

      Good question! I'll consider this as a topic. In short, the gerund usually refers to an activity: golfing, swimming, walking. The noun is the abstract concept, the name. In the case of "a swim" and "a walk," it's a specific event. Let's go for a swim/a walk. VS I enjoy swimming/walking.

    Hello Jennifer, your concept of the perfect gerund is clear to me. But what between a simple gerund and a perfect one should I use when using words like regret?
    Like, I regret doing this. Or I regret having done this.
    The reason I am doubtful about this is that I often hear people use "I regret doing that" even though they did it in the past.

    • @Englishwithjennifer
      @Englishwithjennifer  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Akshat. If the timeline is clear, you can use a simple gerund.
      I regret hurting you. I didn't mean to.
      I regret not studying. I should have prepared more.
      I regret not being there for you when you needed me.
      I didn't put a lot of emphasis on perfect gerunds because we don't use them as often.
      You'll like encounter reduced adverb clauses (to phrases) more: Having been told many times about the dangers of winter, the hikers knew what precautions to take.

      4-) Success in life results from being organized, being conscientious and learning effectively. (The word order is better this way, but I'm not sure "learning effectively" is the best way to express the idea. Maybe "constantly learning.")
      5-) According to multiple reports, walking at a relaxed and gentle pace may progressively diminish the likelihood of suffering from cardiovascular diseases.
      So true! Well written.
      6-) The new neighbors are awful. Their making noise/Their being noisy at all hours drives me crazy. I really want to tell them that their frequent partying/ their throwing frequent parties has got to stop.
      7-) Well done.
      8-) My country takes pride in having fixed the serious traffic problem and providing the public with better health care service. (If it ended, then we can't use adjectives like "never-ending.")
      9-) Having been arrested for stealing a ring made of several valuable gems, Sarah remains in prison at the age of 75. / ...Sarah, now 75, is serving a life-sentence.
      Good ideas! Thanks for sharing.

    Hi Jennifer,
    Why do we sometimes need to use a gerund after preposition and other time we need to use a noun?
    For example: A hotel manager is someone who is responsible for " running " a hotel .
    A lifeguard is someone who is responsible for " the safety " of the swimmers .
    We don't say for " safing the swimmers.

    • @Englishwithjennifer
      @Englishwithjennifer  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Good question. If your idea is based on an action, that action has a verb. Then we form a gerund.
      Responsible for running a hotel.
      But nouns or anything that behaves like a noun can be an object of a preposition:
      Responsible for hotel operations.
      Note that "operation" is a choice for us because this word family includes two different forms for the noun and verb. "Run" doesn't have a noun in the same word family. We're forced to create a noun (a verbal noun = a gerund) with -ing.
      Responsible for the safety.
      Here "safe" doesn't have a verb in the same word family, so we can't form a gerund, but we can use the noun "safety."

      In American English, we often use the simple past when the time frames are clear. There isn't much need for the past perfect if you have time markers. I'd use "was" in that statement. At the time you came, it was quiet.

    I explained about Maureen calling round.
    Is Calling Round a gerund or a Reduced adj. clause or simply an ing form?
    Can also phrasal verbs be gerunds?

    • @Englishwithjennifer
      @Englishwithjennifer  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello. I see "calling" as the gerund. About what? About calling. So "calling" is the object of the preposition. We can make the gerund possessive: Maureen's calling. (She's the one doing the action.) In everyday English, many use simply the name rather than a possessive form: Maureen calling.
      Yes, phrasal verbs can form gerunds: [Growing up in Pennsylvania] made me love winter. = gerund subject

    There's a lot more to gerunds than meet the eye.
    I don't see any confusion with your example:
    While I was relaxing on the beach, I got a nice tan (Complex sentence with a subject and verb combination in both clauses).
    While relaxing on the beach, I got a nice tan. ("While relaxing on the beach" = Reduced adjective clause which becomes a phrase) The second half of the sentence is obviously the independent clause, for it can stand alone as a sentence.
    Relaxing on the beach is a way to gain a good tan. (Gerund phrase)
    Task A
    1. Watching television is a great way to relax.
    2. In the early morning hours, I enjoy winding down.
    3. A major cause of stress is focussing on failure.
    4. Success in life results from working towards goals.
    Task B (I am not entirely sure what you're asking as it looks like the answers are in the questions.)
    1. I like being told what to do.
    2. I am never afraid of being judged harshly.
    Task C
    The new neighbors are awful. Their arguing drives me crazy. I really want to tell them that their fighting has to stop.
    Task D
    1. My country takes pride in having done so much to combat climate change.
    2. Having been taught at a young age to respect my elders made me the person I am today.

      Thank you for watching, support my ideas, and completing the tasks!
      One correction: The phrases with "while" and other conjunctions are (as I see them) adverb phrases reduced from adverb clauses (not adjective clauses). But I see a similar pattern with reduced adjective clauses. Reduction of adverb and adjective clauses often leaves us with participles.
      Task A.
      1. Agreed, unless you're watching the news. Then you get all riled up!
      2. That means you go to sleep late, right?
      3. Agreed. Interesting note: double s = UK/ single s = US (focussing/focusing)
      4. Yes. Setting goals, creating a plan, and following through.
      Task B.
      Yes. I just wanted viewers to type out the full answers to reinforce the structure.
      1. If it's a task that's completely new to me, however, I appreciate being guided.
      2. I think sometimes we know we're going to be judged, so we have to be prepared for it mentally.
      Task C.
      May we all have peaceful, friendly neighbors!
      Task D.

      2. My other example: Having been taught to keep everything tidy and organized has made me the person I am today. :)

    Could you tell me the difference between
    A : I like drinking water.
    Now if we use drinking as gerund it means i enjoy the action of drinking water, but if we use it as an adjective then it means i like the water that is for drinking, so please let me know how do i know what sentence mean what because the structure is always the same. Pls reply

    • @Englishwithjennifer
      @Englishwithjennifer  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Context will help listeners/readers understand. Most would assume, however, that you enjoy drinking water, that is, having a glass or a bottle of water. They would assume you prefer to consume drinking water as opposed to drinking muddy water, ocean water, or waste water.

      If you say, "I like drinking the water," you're referring to specific water. Maybe you like the water in Finland better than the water in the US, for example.

    Hello ,teacher, first of all , i am so thankful for getting so brillent course . I have been confusing about the usages about gerund when being used as object complements and adjective complents , even though i go though so many other viedos and websites to find out the same usages like what you taugh at this lession. Would you like tO offer me more explanation about this . the exact content is at the 18;08 " do you have trouble making small talk‘’ and are you comfortalble talking to people' Does it keep the same meaning if i change the first original sentence to " do you have trouble "in" making small talk", which i put an extra prepositon “ in” . is it a commonly usage with gerund functioning a obeject complement? thank you so much!

    • @Englishwithjennifer
      @Englishwithjennifer  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thank you for watching my lesson and reflecting on how I see gerunds in use. Let me state that there's some disagreement when it comes to what exactly a gerund is and how it functions in a sentence. Not all may agree with my explanations, but I hope my lessons help bring clarity to learners. Complements are yet another topic where there can be varying views and examples. In the case of "trouble," most learner's dictionaries recognize two common patterns:
      trouble with + noun
      trouble + (ing) -- whether you call it a gerund or a participle or just the -ing form of the verb
      The phrase "trouble in" isn't a pattern recognized as strongly. You'll see this confirmed via books.google.com/ngrams. Type in a search for "trouble with, trouble in."
      In short, trouble is further explained via a prepositional phrase or an -ing form. Either way, I see them both as object complements.
      Hope that helps.

    • @Englishwithjennifer
      @Englishwithjennifer  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      a talking parrot = noun phrase with a participial adjective. What kind of parrot?
      a parrot talking = This could be seen as a reduced adjective clause. "A parrot that talks."
      A parrot talking is not unusual.
      I sometimes see overlap between structures and the terms we use.

    Jennifer, I know you avoid any political statements in your videos, and I see Putin as a person who doesn't care about anything except his own ego. The people in Russia are suffering because of his pride, just like Venezuela, where the leader doesn't care about the well-being of his people.
    So, I just wanted to express my views to you and your audience, as this is a sad period in history.
    I admire the people in Ukraine for their courage and commitment to saving their country.

      I don't like to see people on either side suffer. What I've seen on TV and on social media tells me that Ukrainians have a lot of courage and love for their country. I've reached out to those I know and hope they remain safe. I hope the conflict will end soon. Until then, I'll continue to offer my videos lessons and live instruction. All the learning communities I create online are welcoming ones. People can create peace and positive spaces, and that's what we do when we learn together here on TH-cam, and that's also what I do when I run my Patreon classes. All are welcome. We support one another. We care for one another.
