@@englishspeaking360 dear friend: I am a Zen master. On January 1, 2024, I fled China and came to New York, USA to promote Buddhism. Hello! I have removed the compound nouns section because they are formed with the present participle, not with gerunds. It was a mistake on my part. However, present participles and gerunds are both similar in appearance (-ing verb).
Can you please find out gerunds from this paragraph? Hiking through the dense forest, we heard a twig snapping behind us. A deer was grazing nearby. The sun began setting, casting a warm glow on the tree tops. Being in the forest and listening to the sounds of nature calmed our souls. We enjoyed breathing in the fresh, earthy air.
Very true. I've divided them into different categories because many students cannot identify prepositions. Causes or reasons are easy to spot and phrasal verbs are well-known, hence the extra categories. Thanks for watching!
Hello 😃 Glad you liked my video! Yes, you can use adverbs and gerunds at the same time. Adverbs can modify gerunds by describing how the action is being performed. For example: "She enjoys singing loudly in the shower." "He was praised for carefully painting the mural." In these sentences, "loudly" and "carefully" modify the gerunds "singing" and "painting," giving more information about how the actions are done.
Hello! There's a lot to unpack here... When using "as well as", there is generally more focus on the first part of the sentence. The second part is often seen as additional information, meaning the two parts are not entirely equal in emphasis. Key Points About "As Well As": 1. Focus on the First Part: The first part is the main idea, while the second part is supplementary. For example: She is an excellent writer as well as a talented artist. (The focus is on her being an excellent writer, with her being a talented artist as additional information.) 2. Not Exactly Equal: Unlike "and," which gives equal importance to both parts, "as well as" makes the first part more prominent. 3. Verb Agreement: The verb agrees with the subject in the first part of the sentence. For example: John, as well as his friends, is coming to the party. (John is the main subject, so the verb agrees with it.) 4. Usage with Clauses: If "as well as" connects two clauses, the focus is still usually on the first clause. Example: She studies hard, as well as works part-time to support herself. (The focus is on her studying hard; working part-time is an additional detail.) How "As Well As" Differs from "And": "As well as" emphasizes the first part and adds the second as extra. He speaks Spanish as well as French. (Focus: Speaking Spanish is more significant than speaking French.) "And" gives equal weight to both parts. He speaks Spanish and French. (Both languages are equally important here.)
Hello! Well spotted! Numbers 5 and 9 contained present participles instead of gerunds. They both have the same form (-ing verb) but I decided to remove those 2 sections so as to provide the most accurate information to my viewers.
Hello! In these sentences, "working" and "trying" are actually present participles, not gerunds. Here's why: 1. "I spent hours working on the project." "Working" is a present participle because it describes what you were doing during the time. It functions as part of the verb phrase, modifying "I spent hours." If "working" were a gerund, it would function as a noun (e.g., "Working on the project is tiring."). 2. "The man looked here and there, trying to find his son." "Trying" is a present participle because it is part of the participial phrase "trying to find his son," which describes what the man was doing while he looked. Key Difference: Gerunds function as nouns (e.g., "Working is hard."). Present participles function as verbs or adjectives, often describing actions happening simultaneously (as in your sentences).
Right! Numbers 5 and 9 contained present participles instead of gerunds. They both have the same form (-ing verb) but I decided to remove those 2 sections so as to provide the most accurate information to my viewers. I hope you understand.
@MajidNovin-jx8zn Oh! Now I understand! If you have trouble making sentences quickly, I recommend learning a few patterns and using them over and over again. I speak 7 languages and that's how I do it. You should think about the expressions you often use in your native language and translate them into English. Pick patterns that only require you to add 1 word to get a new sentence. For example, "I would like to + verb." With that pattern, you can make an infinity of sentences. I would like to eat pizza. I would like to see you tomorrow. I would like to work with you. Once memorized, such patterns can help you speak without having to think too much. Unfortunately I don't have a lesson about that yet. I'll get working on it soon.

Present participles (also the -ing form of a verb) can function as adjectives or be used in relative clauses. Gerund as a Noun: Swimming is fun. (Here, "swimming" is the subject of the sentence and acts as a noun.) Present Participle as an Adjective: The swimming pool is open. ("Swimming" describes the type of pool and functions as an adjective.) Present Participles in Relative Clauses: A participle can be used to form a relative clause, replacing the relative pronoun and verb. The man standing by the door is my friend. ("Standing" is a participle modifying "the man," effectively a reduced relative clause: The man who is standing by the door.) In short, while gerunds cannot function as adjectives or be used in relative clauses, present participles (which share the same -ing form) can.

Yes I can. Can you? Which ones do you think are gerunds?
#6 & #7 fall into the category of "ing" after prepositions
Very true. I've divided them into different categories because many students cannot identify prepositions. Causes or reasons are easy to spot and phrasal verbs are well-known, hence the extra categories.

Hello sir, Good evening.
How to use "as well as " phrase?
In thee as well as phrase, where is the emphasis, first one or second second one
Hello! There's a lot to unpack here... When using "as well as", there is generally more focus on the first part of the sentence. The second part is often seen as additional information, meaning the two parts are not entirely equal in emphasis.
Key Points About "As Well As":

Hello! Well spotted! Numbers 5 and 9 contained present participles instead of gerunds. They both have the same form (-ing verb) but I decided to remove those 2 sections so as to provide the most accurate information to my viewers.
Sir, I have one more question. Can you please help me identify whether there are gerunds in these sentences or not.
1. I spent hours working on the project.
2. The man looked here and there, trying to find his son.
Hello! In these sentences, "working" and "trying" are actually present participles, not gerunds. Here's why:
1. "I spent hours working on the project."
"Working" is a present participle because it describes what you were doing during the time. It functions as part of the verb phrase, modifying "I spent hours."
If "working" were a gerund, it would function as a noun (e.g., "Working on the project is tiring.").
2. "The man looked here and there, trying to find his son."
"Trying" is a present participle because it is part of the participial phrase "trying to find his son," which describes what the man was doing while he looked.
Key Difference:
Gerunds function as nouns (e.g., "Working is hard.").
Present participles function as verbs or adjectives, often describing actions happening simultaneously (as in your sentences).

Gerunds do not function as adjectives and are not used in relative clauses. However, they can sometimes appear similar to present participles, which can function as adjectives.
Gerunds vs. Present Participles:
Gerunds always act as nouns.
Present participles (also the -ing form of a verb) can function as adjectives or be used in relative clauses.
Gerund as a Noun:
Swimming is fun. (Here, "swimming" is the subject of the sentence and acts as a noun.)
Present Participle as an Adjective:
The swimming pool is open. ("Swimming" describes the type of pool and functions as an adjective.)
Present Participles in Relative Clauses:
A participle can be used to form a relative clause, replacing the relative pronoun and verb.
The man standing by the door is my friend. ("Standing" is a participle modifying "the man," effectively a reduced relative clause: The man who is standing by the door.)
In short, while gerunds cannot function as adjectives or be used in relative clauses, present participles (which share the same -ing form) can.
Examples of 'gerund in reduced relative clause' are missing in the video. Could you please fill up the gap?
Hello! Well spotted! Numbers 5 and 9 contained present participles instead of gerunds. They both have the same form (-ing verb) but I decided to remove those 2 sections so as to provide the most accurate information to my viewers.
