I haven't played BG3 yet, but I'm really hoping that they make talking your way out of combat more rewarding. It always feels bad in DOS2 playing a character that would avoid combat if possible, but you have to get into the fight anyway so you don't loose xp

I think rewarding the player with around the same exp for talking your way out of a situation or even more at times seems like a good idea.

This game is a tour de force of game design. It planted itself firmly on the pantheon of cRPGs as one of the greatest. An instant classic.
Few aspects are somewhat flawed, but then nothing is perfect. However, in every part that really matters this is nothing short of a true masterpiece.
You are right emphasizing the fact that they thought of almost anything a player could do in any situation. It actually caught me off guard so many times. In other games you'd expect it to be what some people refer as emergent gameplay. Or playing out of the box, not the way it was intended. In this game - it's ready for your worst(best). Every god damn time. The amount of work that went into just scripting, and designing encounters, level layouts, layers and layers of...stuff. Secrets. Somebody's job was actually just constantly trying to think about every way a player may resolve each situation, of which the game has hundreds and hundreds. Then there's writing. Which is so tight. A lot of cRPGs are very verbose, drowning you in massive paragraphs of text in each dialogue. DOS2 manages to say as much with way fewer words, while also giving tons of flavor to the world and characters. And obviously totally bonkers creativity of the world is a signature Larian touch. There are so many delightfully absurd situations you will get yourself into, it has a whiff of Pratchett's writing to it.
It looks amazing, and that soundtrack is absolutely divine. I have tracks from it stuck in my head for days at times.
Ah, I could go on forever. To me personally it's a 10/10 game. Tiny annoyances I had were just dwarfed by the amount of quality time I had with this game. It's a great laugh, it's a tactical challenge, it's a good story, memorable characters, a true adventure. What a legendary game.

  • @alexsamurai1230
    @alexsamurai1230 2 ปีที่แล้ว +60

Just to add something to your point on 'doing everything'; for me the big issue with the game is how tight the XP is. I feel that in order to keep up with the recommended level you need to really do 95% of the content, and this leads to either hoovering each map for hours looking for the last few enemies, checking a walkthrough for missed quests or finding exploity ways to make up the ground - Hence why players are often killing NPCs or judging decisions on XP rewards more than roleplay.
During my current playthrough I had a fun chilled out run through Act 1, and found a new way to escape Fort Joy, but wasn't able to quite hit level 8 before getting off the island. I ended up fast travelling back into town to escape the Fort again through a different route, then circling back around and killing all the magisters on the upper levels just so I could keep up with XP. It defeated the point of multiple unique routes that the opening act is so famous for that I needed to double back and do the alternate paths just to be the right level for the next zone.
It would have been great to see the game provide just another 10-20% XP either through a bit more content or just more generous quest rewards. It would give more freedom and flexibility to explore an area and then move on when you feel you have seen enough, and perhaps leave some of the secrets uncovered for another playthrough.

@@maxmustermann-zx9yq I've only finished the game once on normal (and never needed to do any deep research), so i'm no expert on the subject. That said, with over 100 hours of playtime, what I've noticed is that the stat scaling is ridiculously high, making battling multiple enemies two or three levels above you often brutally difficult if you don't have a good build or system-specific knowledge that you can use to even the difference. Many times, with just this small difference in levels, you are almost forced to change most of your equipment because it becomes too weak.
And since progress is pretty ungenerous with experience, whether you like it or not, you're strongly encouraged to do whatever you can. It's not hard to imagine a stage in the game where you might be so underdeveloped that it becomes impossible to continue playing. The second act, for example, has a monstrous amount of content that doesn't need to be done to complete it. It can be finished very quickly, but if you do that, once you start act three, the first enemy you encounter will be so many levels above you that it will probably be able to eliminate your party on its own.

    • @maxmustermann-zx9yq
      @maxmustermann-zx9yq ปีที่แล้ว +3

@@Dmndota mmh, I think RPGs really need to take a hint from the Left for Dead Director AI to create some sort of Dungeon Master AI
level scaling enemies is only one part of it, loot should fit too and quests should ideally not be piled on until the player either has some downtime or maybe they should work downtime in the main quest in some way (like "hey we need some time to do this/money to buy this/relationship with that faction/.... so see what you can do, maybe take some contracts")

I bought this game for the Switch last year on a whim, and it has hands down been one of my favorite RPGs of all time! I haven't beat it yet, the Final Act has so many brutal battles that I am taking my time. I love the story the many many ways to approach battles and especially all the crazy abilities you can pull off. If i had one complaint of this game (as a first time player) it is that you basically have to do every battle possible to be a high enough level to complete the Act, especially Act 2. Again this is coming from a first time player who hasn't researched broken builds or min maxed my XP. Still though beating a tough battle after many tries is euphoric, and makes all the effort totally worth it!

The inventory system is absolutely a mess and the gift bag "fix" for it is even worse. You bring up a great point about murdering everybody in town because I've absolutely done that as it is nothing but beneficial to do so, same with cheesing dialogue to steal from NPC's. Also, summoning is just straight up broken, holy shit. Great review!

I deliberately didn't do any of the truely immersion-breaking stuff like murdering whole towns for no reason in my first playthrough on normal difficulty, but I definitely would on tactician difficulty. The gift bag inventory "fix" is awful. I like the idea of specialized bags for different categories of items, but they went way too specific; there are so many bags that it's just as cluttered as without them. The only thing I'd add (and that is just my personal preference) is that the pre-made characters are so much more interesting and give you so many more options, you are kinda pressured into playing them instead of an original character. That stings a little. Especially in a CRPG.

I just found this review! I had actually picked up this game not much after this review was released, I played the For Honour mode for my first playthrough as I enjoy the challenge and it required me to learn a lot about the game before feeling comfortable about moving to the next act. I feel like you hit a lot of strong points in your review and especially related to the meta-gaming issue with killing all the people with no consequences. Yeah, I ended the game with like 1.5 million gold and also had 100's of kg of crafting materials (which I always had gear-fear), but it was an incredible game and was really rewarding to figure everything out. I will admit that Act II I think is the hardest section of the game for playing the For Honour mode, which was kind of disappointed as it made the later acts, but especially Act III feel trivial.

Nice video man ! Personally my favorite CRPG too ^^
What I dislike the most however is the armor system, because it gets exponentially crazy as the levels goes by and if you don't have a team specialized in physical damage, or magic damage, you're just going to drag the fights and crippled yourself even more (reference to the summoning part of your video). Thus, it just kills diversity in your party and although I love this game to death, this has been really bothering me. I've tried the Divine war mod but it just doesn't cut it for me I guess. In that regard, I feel that DOS 1 was better handling the armor system.

That's not true. I beat Honour Mode in a blind run with 2 physical and 2 magical. Although fights did dragged on forever, I felt it was mostly because of Defense spec and gear. There should never be a consequence to initiate a conversation with one character, then teleport all the NPCs that annoy the eff out of you because they initiate dialogue loops. I can only hear "how ya holdin up brie" and "if I'm not visitinc ya, who will?" so many times before i want to shut the game off. Those NPCs will get murdered every time.... Usually discreetly as possible. It's the first thing I do upon entering a town hub as soon as I get some sort of teleport ability.
Side note though... Do you ever find out what happened to Brie or is there more backstory on Thun? It's like Belegar from DoS1. My wife and I are obsessed with DoS1/2. I've 100%ed them both and I am not an achievement hunter by any means.
    P. S. Fane blood mage lone wolf = the cheese to end all cheesing. Summoning kinda balances out toward the end game.

the only part i dont like is that once you become divine there is nothing left to do, the first time i beat the game i expected to have some sort of short campaign after becoming divine and i was looking forward to using my Divine power in some different way than what i could do before becoming divine. It would be nice if some1 creates a mod to extend the game past divinity. For example after u become divine u could head inside the void and battle the voidwoken and the black king in their home territory > i think that would be fun and maybe some abilities that would represent your Godhood

So I just bought it during the last steam sale on a whim and haven't touched it for a week and the buyers remorse was starting to kick in. I finally had the time to play the game, sink my teeth in and I'm pretty much loving it. It's the third isometric CRPG I've played, the other two being DA 2 & 3, both games I haven't finished but Divinity just gives me a lot to think about.
I have a lot of gripes when I was just starting out though for example the main menu being a bit overbearing especially when the last games I've played had a very minimalist main menu that almost just lets you start the game. Further down, the system UI is a bit cluttered, inventory, crafting, and later on the skills you acquire floods their respective menus/interface. Though those I could still get used to, the persuasion mechanic on the other hand feels a bit under cooked, or I'm just missing something since even if my character has all their points on a specific attribute, without the persuasion skill, said character will simply get scoffed at at best or goes through trial by combat at worst.
On the other hand I've finally internalized why people turn to murder hobos.

I'm actually finishing Act 2 at Reapers Coast.
    Cons:
Story: so far is kind of "mee" I really dont care about any NPC or companions at all.
Inventory management: 100% agree on you. Also i would add buying stuff to sellers is annoying hovering over every book to see the spell it unlocks.
    Pros:
Technical: My crappy 2018's laptop still run this game quite smoothie and visually is stunning...
Combat: AI is challenging, some situations are kind of unfair or repetitive, but this is what most keeps me into this game right now.

I agree with many points, but I also want to add if there is a D:OS3 I hope they do something a little different with the armour system. It's better than the first game's combat system in my opinion, however, its tedious to balance a physical/magic damage party unless you have good knowledge of fights beforehand. A pure physical team can be very diverse in party composition, but a pure magic team runs into the problem of fighting over the same gear. Archers and Summoners are the best at dealing both damage types, with Necromancers just tailing behind. I wish more magic damaging skills scaled with strength to help balance party composition.
To sum things up, I hope for a slight change in the current armour system or a more diverse pool of skills that deal physical/magic damage.

For a guy who generally hates turn-based combat, I would say that combat in DOS2 is my favourite of all time. I'm currently on my way on beating it true solo on Tactician as close to 100% as I can get by going in blind as it's my first playthrough, and for me it just hits the right amount of having to optimize your strategy without ever forcing you to exploit the game or use your tools beyond their intent. I had my own share of problems with roelplaying aspects, dialogue, GUI and QoL, but I would without a doubt say that combat in this game is a flawless paragon.

I have up to 70h of DO2 and I came to your review trying to find a reason to come back to the game since I wasn't having a good time with it. Beyond it's pros and cons, what annoyed me most was the main story tone in general and the pacing. I dont mind the slow combat, I actually enjoy it. The tone is a bit silly and the voice action doesn't help. The companions has interesting plots although, to the point I wish I knew before creating my character. I could easily play with Lohse, just to give an example. I really enjoy your reviews but I dont know if I can go back to DOS2. Maybe I'll give a second chance after hearing what you said here. DOS2 was also one of my favorite games ever, and I'm usually an open world RPG guy. I agree that the writing in DOS2 is amazing - just the right amount of serious with funny sprinkled in. Playing with the Origin characters is a must for anyone's first and/or second play thru. The only criticism I'd give to the origin stories is that some felt rushed at the end. Lohse's story, for example, had breadcrumbs of interest all thru the game, but Beast barely had anything until the final Act. Beast's felt kind of "added in" last minute while Lohse's felt like it was there from the beginning.

I love the game too, but my biggest gripe has to be the final fight. The difficulty level skyrockets from 1 to 100 immediately. You could be strong enough to fight every major act 4 boss without even having your shields broken and this fight can straight up murder you before you get a chance to react. Multiple playthroughs now I've had my highest damage dealer get focused so hard by the phase transition kraken bullshit they're either dead, or permanently stunned and unable to get a single round off in the fight.
There's really two ways to approach the final fight. You either know the game inside and out, pull off some insane murder spree with the assistance of Fane's overpowered ability on your best character. Or, you have a normal party in which case your best course of action is to just use movement abilities, get as far away as possible, and chug invisibility potions / herbs / cast it yourself while all the rest of the idiots fight each other for multiple turns.
The easiest final fight I actually had was hilariously doing the rupture / chicken combo on the secret final boss that shall not be named due to spoilers, but when the phase transition happens and he tries to summon help, he runs across the entire arena in a pseudo cutscene, but rupture tendons is still applied and he almost one shots himself before the fight starts.

RPG/Open-World games have been my favorite genre. Thanks to Divinity Original Sin, I was introduced to CRPG and fell head over heels in love with it. DOS was great & DOS 2 improved upon the solid base set by its predecessor.
Now tying my comment to this video - great video. I do agree with the points that you have made especially the criticism regarding not having consequences about killing civilians or merchants when you are close to finishing the act. This seems like an exploit/weak game design to me. I haven't played any games that I can think of where the entire team takes their turn, but I do enjoy this individual turn-based combat which makes things interesting - adds rng, make the combat more strategic and intuitive.

I would add to the downsides the armor system.
I spent 600 hours in this game and finished it like 10 times, but however I'm looking at it, I always go full physical, or full magical damages.
Besides, magical resists on ennemies are everywhere, and physical resists are pretty rare, which create inbalance in my opinion.
This is more of a mechanical criticism, but I feel like being able to have magical and physical damage mixed up in a team shouldn't be that big of a problem in higher difficulties (It should even be rewarded in my opinion).
I'm currently trying a run with Divinity Unleashed + Modded classes like Chronomancer, Astromancer, etc.
Seems promising so far, everything looks new wich is at least refreshing !
And no need to worry about magical or physical team comp for once. ^^

My problem with games like this is you are at the mercy of the in game economy. If you want something you have to buy it, if you need money you have to steal or kill to get it. I would like to see a game where if you want something like Thor's hammer, you find a blacksmith in the middle of nowhere, take him to a Volcano and give him a meteorite to pound into a hammer. Something like that. Of course Minecraft and Terraria are games I really like; if you want something you can make/find/buy it and there are plenty of ways to make money that don't involve murder/hoboing everything in sight. If you want a diamond ring you should be able to hire someone with good eyesight and pay them to walk up and down a streambed until they find a precious gem, then you pay them for their time and now you have a gem, if you want it enchanted find an fairy, a wood fairy will give it a different effect than an ice fairy, etc. Why aren't there any games where you can actually make the One Ring to Rule them all by gaining friendship with the Elves until they offer to make you an accessory, and then provide all the necessary ingredients until they make you one with the desired effect, invisibility, mind control, etc. I want a game where if I so choose, I can make a cape with +10 to finesse, assuming that I get it signed by magic ink that I made from a living tree, after doing quests for the tree, and giving it 23 tons of jungle soil, bit by bit, until it gave me some of its bark, dripping with sap, then I turn the bark into ink, and the sap into the ink glue, and have the 10 strongest archers in the land sign the cape below the gold fringe with that magic ink, on the blessed bed of the high fairy, blah blah blah blah. Basically the best sword in the game is half a dozen quests getting bonuses from everyone around you, and the sword gives every sort of effect in the game. There is no reason why Thor can have such a good hammer and we can't get the same thing, if we do everything he did to get it. "Worthy"? Sure, you could make a weapon that only the pure of heart can wield. Hmm, 10 virgins sewing a tapestry of everything it takes to be good and pure, and then before you forge the sword, you place the metal that you will be using to make it in a pool of pure, still water, wrapped in the tapestry, and infuse it with fairy dust, every day, for 1 full year. I don't know, I'm sure the devs could come up with a ridiculous way to add effects to a piece of equipment, stack them all, and give the player 100% control over everything. The best skill in the game would be the ability to read the hidden stats of NPC's to see which ones can add what stats and effects to weapons. Like a princess that when she thinks about all the time she spent alone, her tears should be stored and used to add an effect to a weapon that makes it return to you if you reach out your hand and say the name of your weapon. Now how to explain all this to the player, that would be the hard part. If you just give a random blacksmith metal and have him make you armor, you get stats based on how good he is at doing it, with no magical effects, unless you had a fairy bless it, but the blessing would only be as good as that fairy was. For all you know you just need a fox to stare at the armor while it is being made and it gets x1.3 to walking speed. I can't be the only one that can make up this stuff. If you use the bottom of a broken bottle to have the fox look through you get fortification that holds off the effects of poison for 3 turns, but after that you get the poison like normal.
