From woke to MAGA to A.I.: See Erykah Badu’s entire Ari Melber interview

  • Top Republicans are attacking what they call “woke” politics, and even passing laws designed to “stop” a supposed woke agenda. The singer who first brought that concept to the culture, in “Master Teacher,” Erykah Badu, reflects on social justice, culture and “woke politics” today - one of several topics the four-time Grammy winner tackles in this extended discussion with MSNBC anchor and music obsessive Ari Melber. Badu discusses her singing, deep links to hip hop, personal evolution, spirituality and approach to the music industry and business in general, including her new cannabis line with “Cookies.” She also reacts to earlier moments and videos from her career, and engages with an “assessment” of her work that an artificial intelligence chat bot generated by drawing on public writings about her music and its message. This in-depth discussion is the newest installment of “Mavericks with Ari Melber,” a series of interviews with artists, musicians and cultural icons (msnbc.com/mavericks)

You know I’m an interviewer critic and honestly he did what more interviewers should be doing, beyond prepared, genuinely interested and connected to the work prior to the interview, and allowed the conversation to be malleable at all points of the conversation, there was no wrong turn taken. No overarching desire to pressure her and to squeeze hot sauce out of her , but rather , inquisitively asking and learning about the sauce in her bottle, respectfully discussing ingredients, how the ingredients work together to create this one in a million delicacy

I bought Erykah's first album in early '98 as a college student mainly because I was about to go see a Lilith Fair show in San Diego, and she was the only artist on the bill that I wasn't familiar with. I was instantly blown away by the album, and then her audience banter during that Lilith Fair really set her apart from the other artists. She spoke about being a cypher, and she said to never give your "power" (sexual energy/body, etc.) to just anyone. She just continues to be amazing, not "just" a singer, but a poetess, thinker and philosopher, too.

It seemed like they were both really having a good time talking with each other! The interviewer clearly loves her music and was super prepared and engaged and interested and Erykah was relaxed and generous. It’s a great interview all the way through, it even gets better as they form the energy together. I’ve loved Erykah since the beginning, it’s cool to hear her look back a little bit but to hear the way she thinks about herself as an artist for today at all times. She’s ready to meet the next moment, she’s ready to share everything new she’s learned, she doesn’t need to sit around with a shoebox full of old photos. She’s ready to go make some more art now. Loved this one.

I was born in 1977. When I heard Badu in '97 as a scared shitless 19 year old dad to a new born, I became a fan for life. That boy was born in 1997 and he still lives and breathes Badu's music as well as a lot of music that sprung up from it. I'm a musician and so is he. This music has been a major bond for us. When he was a teenager a he plugged me back into playing jazz, neo-soul, R&B and for as much as I initially taught him, I've learned tons from him in the last few years. He introduced me to Hiatus Kaiyote's music which I can't help but hear as a direct descendant. Infinite love and respect to Badu.

Hearing that definition gave me an immediate reflection of Afrocentricity during that time. The empowerment black Americans felt in that era was the consensus of our race taking back who we are as a people. We tapped into where our ancestors came from and defined it, creating black culture going into the next chapter of our history in these United States.

I remember when i was stupid af and i thought Badu was “deep” Thought she was connected to a higher consciousness or plane.. I was pretty upset when i realized the truth. She is put there to sell idiots a false concept in hopes they won’t go deeper and start digging past the surface. She is the equivalent to a televangelist begging his followers for money.
Its fitting she sits across from a hollow zionist shill pushing propaganda for war manufacturers and reality manipulators.

It used to mean that but now democrats use that as a way to manipulate culture. Not black, but legitimately raised in the church with incredible pipes and range. Then followed the typical comments about “what about Mary J? Aretha? Etc..”. Is it sort of a novelty that Ari Melber interviews people like Erykah Badu? I guess. I’m pretty sure Erykah Badu would not sit for an hour with this guy if she didn’t think he was legit. Whether or not this is “conversation black folks have every day”, it’s really good content and is arguably “other level“ that a guy with his platform is having conversations with these artists who many of his watchers may not be familiar with.
