Eorl the Young: Founder of Rohan | Tolkien Explained

  • How did the realm of Rohan come to be? In this video, we pick up with the rule of Eorl, Lord of the Éothéod. When the realm of Gondor is attacked by a group of Easterlings known as the Balchoth, Lord Cirion, the Ruling Steward of Gondor, calls for aid from their friends of old. The events lead to the formation of Rohan and an alliance that would last well beyond the War of the Ring.

      @@ballerlarva4214 this is incorrect, there *is* an original sin that belongs to Men which is the Doom that followed them from the East when they entered into Beleriand.
      It is simply the case that, under the influence of the Eldar, the severity of the Doom was lessened and some small shade of the original glory of Men could make itself known through the deeds of heroes like Beren.

    I didn't realize that Eomer also "restored" the line of kings like Aragorn did. All the kings of Rohan were descended from Eorl King, of course, but after Helm Hammerhand the line switched to his nephew through his sister, technically a new dynasty. Eomer King can claim kingship from his uncle and his long line of maternal grandfathers but also a direct Father to son line from his father's side all the way back to Eorl King as well.

    • @tonys9397
      @tonys9397 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      So had Eomer died as well line of Eorl would have ended? Or would have Eowyn become queen?

    • @AlexanderNecheff
      @AlexanderNecheff 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@tonys9397 Likely Eowyn would have become queen regnant. This is part of the reason why she was supposed to stay behind in Edoras when Rohan is reinforcing Gondor; had Theoden and Eomer died at the Pelennor fields, she would be able to rule what was left of Rohan. Of course, she pretends to be Dernhelm and participates in the battle of the Pelennor fields anyways.

    After the romans left Brittania, the island was lashed by pictish raids from the north, and irish incursions from the west, and some irishmen managed to settle in Dyfed and Gwynedd. Until Cunedda came from the Old North, today Scotland, to drive the irishmen to the sea, and usurp power in Gwynedd.

  • @JesusFriedChrist
    @JesusFriedChrist 3 ปีที่แล้ว +142

    If I remember correctly, I learned this fact about 13 years ago: the “DH” of Tolkien words like Calenardhon and Caradhras, are to be pronounced as a “TH”. It’s likely a feature of Old English, I know how much Tolkien loved language, and of anyone were to include a small feature like that, it would be him.
    If I recall correctly also, Ian McKellen himself verifies this in FotR as Gandalf pronounced it as “Carathras” just before they attempt to make it over the pass to the other side of the Misty Mountains, before they give up and decide go try their luck through Moria.
    I don’t mean to nitpick, I-not unlike Tolkien-have an affinity for language, and also for small details. Just thought I’d make you aware of this, and perhaps you can double check me and verify it for yourself!
    Anyways, keep up the great work, your videos are very entertaining and very well researched, I’ve watched quite a few now and this minor linguistic discrepancy was the only mistake I could find, so you’re doing extremely well and should be proud of yourself!

      From the movies I thought Rohan just sprang up by itself. If you have large fertile land people will move there and it being so open and somewhat hilly means grasslands are abundant. My headcannon was that the Rohirrim just originated organically. From the people of Gondor who lived there and as Gonder weakened their hold on the province of Rohan weakened too until Rohan elected their own king. Gondor tried to retake the territory by force to keep it but the Rohirrim would prove difficult to pin down and the war dragged on with huge casulties on both sides until they just got tired of fighting. Gonder agreed that Rohan would become a vassal state of Gondor like how the Shire is a vassal state of Arnor.
      Rohan was always my favorite portion of the story. I greatly preferred the more grounded and relatable characters of Rohan over the more arrogant and deeper characters of Gondor.

    Thank you, this video cleared up something which has always bothered me. In RotK, Tolkien mentions that Aragorn 'gives back the land of Rohan to its people, and everyone is amazed at how wise he is' and that never made sense to me. It's the Rohirrim's land, duhh. It makes more sense that the original agreement was basically "I only have the authority of the Stewards, but until/unless my boss shows up & countermands this order, the land is yours." So what Aragorn does in RotK isn't arrogance, it's confirming the age-old agreement with the full authority of the kingship.

    Tolkiens inspirations for all of this is so crisscrossed. Rohan is a Nobel House from Brittany, whose founder was the mythical Conan Meriadoc. Meriadoc Bradybuck "Merry" being derived from here. Who fell under the rule of the Carolingians, who have a Pippin/ Pepin in their Nobel House. Giving us Merry and Pippen. Feanor derives from this rough area too, coming from Normandy in the form of Fearon. A smith who works with Iron, Ferros in Latin. Brittany is where the forest of Broceliande is that inspired Beleriand.
    Eoh is Old English for Horse and is of Germanic Origins. Eomer being a famous war horse and Eowynn being Horse Joy. Theoden comes from Beowulf and means "People". Hama and Halfdan come from Beowulf too, which is an Old English poem. Eorl is where Earl comes from and is cognate with Jarl in Old Norse. Meaning "leader/Chief or man of Noble birth".
    Its crisscrossed as Brittany is linked with the Welsh and Bretons who went to Brittany while fleeing the Saxon invasion that is responsible for Old English. Which is not the language the Celts spoke. Its interesting though how he recombined things or just used things as weird inspirations. Like the phrase Eru Elivagar, which can be found in Eru Iluvatar. Ingwe being in Norse myth along with Finn. Finwe seems to follow the Ing/Ingwe naming scheme applied to Finn. Dori, Ori, Nori, Oin, Gloin, Bifur, Bombur, Filli, Killi, Dwalin, Durinn, Dainn, Frodo, Nain, Thorin, Thror and the Longbeards are all pulled from the Voluspa in Norse. Gimli's name is pulled from the Halls of Gimle where the dead of Ragnorak go. Deor/Dior is Old English and where Deer comes from. Earendel is Old English from a poem called Christ I. Also where Elendil is derived. Aelfwine is Old English and means Elf Friend. Arawen is a celtic name and so is Balan. Beran is an old English name that means bear. Beorn means warrior and maybe bear, having possibly derived from Norse Bjorn. Myrkwood is found in Norse myth and is located near Ukraine supposedly. Im sure there are others im forgetting

    _Thus in the end Marhwini was obliged to retire again to his land beside the Anduin, and the Northmen of his race never again returned to their former homes. Calimehtar withdrew to Gondor, which enjoyed for a time (from 1899 to 1944) a respite from war before the great assault in which the line of its kings came near to its end._
    _Nonetheless the alliance of Calimehtar and Marhwini had not been in vain. If the strength of the Wainriders of Rhovanion had not been broken, that assault would have come sooner and in greater force, and the realm of Gondor might have been destroyed. But the greatest effect of the alliance lay far in the future which none could then foresee: the two great rides of the Rohirrim to the salvation of Gondor, the coming of Eorl to the Field of Celebrant, and the horns of King Théoden upon the Pelennor but for which the return of the King would have been in vain._
    My absolute favorite passage in all of Tolkien, bar none.

    I have always seen Rohan as a symbol of the truest and purest valor. No matter the costs they are always willing to rise to the defence. And this video proves that they don't fight to defend Land or Wealth.
    They fight to defend their PEOPLE.
