I love this channel you inspired me to want to look at more of Tolkien’s lore on Middle-earth. Hi thanks for the video can you please name the music playing in the your older video The life of Feanor I want to know the name of the song starting from 12:50 when Feanor burns the ships .Thanks in advance 😁
I’m asking for the song name in your older video about Sauron in the first age That’s playing during the fight between Sauron and Galadriels brother starting from 7:30 to 8:20 thanks in advance .
He was not a valar, he was not a maiar ,he was not an elf, he was not even a númenórean, yet he was one of the bravest and most noble men of all the peoples of Middle Earth. LONG LIVE THE KING! 🤴🐎
half of the iconic moments in the LOTR movies were from Theoden. "You have no power here Gandalf the Grey!" "What can Men do against such reckless hate?" "Is this it? Is this all you can conjure, Saruman?" and of course "FORTH EORLINGAS!"
Arise, arise, riders of Théoden! Spear shall be shaken, shield shall be splintered, a sword-day, a red day, ere the sun rises! Ride now, ride now, ride! Ride for ruin and the world's ending!
I know it's a movies only scene but Theoden going "I know your face" to Eowyn both, after he is freed from Saruman as well as after being rescued by Eowyn always tears me up. One of the greatest additions they made, if not the best.
my favorite part of the book is the Ride of the Rohirrim before the battle of Pelennor Fields. when Theoden cried in a loud voice more clear than any mortal man before, and blew such a blast that the horn burst asunder, and the host of Rohan sang as they slew.
I always had the feeling that behind the epic wording, Theoden was just incredibly pissed off after his "possession", by Saruman but by himself too, for falling to despair. So he went as hard as he could, and more. It kinda runs in the family, as his ancestor Helm also went super hardcore, and Eomer and Eowyn have shades of this too. It comes full circle when you realize they all are absolutely disregarding death in their moment, overcoming the fear that plagued Men and turned them to the Shadow.
Part of the greatness of Theoden king and his recognition is because of Bernard Hill's spectacular performance in the movies. From him being a puppet of Saruman, devastated by the death of his son, his hopelessness in battle of helms deep to his honourous act in fulfilling the oath of Eorl and riding for his one last battle...
The scene in the movie where he grieves over his son burial didn't phase me as a kid but got to me a bit as an adult. I also liked the scene where his men despair saying too few have come that they cannot defeat the armies of Mordor and Théoden just agrees saying "No we cannot but we will meet them in battle nonetheless." The men of Rohan will keep their oath to Gondor.
My favorite as well for the same reasons. And his profound and iconic lines: "So it begins." "Alas, that these evil days should be mine!" "I know your face." "What can men do against such reckless hate?" "My body is broken." "Let this be the day when we draw swords together!" "I take my leave." "You have no power here, Gandalf the Grey!" "And Rohan shall answer!" "Where was Gondor when the Westfold fell?"
Thanks Nerd of the Rings! This is my favorite character. I especially love his speech at the battle of Pelennor fields, gives me goosebumps everytime I read it or see it in the movie.
I'm not gonna lie Theoden it's probly my favorite characters, just cause he's so much more real than the rest of the characters, vulnerable, yet incredibly strong and courageous!
In my opinnion one of the most underrated characters in all of legendarium! A man of honor and of his people, but what I love the most about him is that altough "why should we ride to aid those who did not come to ours" , he still came and saved Gondor, Bernard Hill did an amazing job for when you rewach whole trilogy all of his scenes are so Kingly, scenes about Father and son, about his people, about his country, his pride, his epic monolgies....I love that character!!!!! As always amazing video really liked this one Matt, thank you! Get us more and more stuff about Gondor and Rohan in general!
He knows what happens to people who double-cross the King of Gondor. Theoden wasn't looking forward to turning into a ghost waiting for the new King to release them from their oaths. Your story telling touched a sad chord and provoked a memory... In Jacksons' movie, when Theoden rallied the Rohirrim at the Pelennor Fields, and screamed, "DEATH, DEATH, DEATH," that too struck a sad chord in my gut, knowing that many good men would die that day. Theoden was a great leader and hero in Tolkiens legendarium and was worth a mention in your anthology of videos. Thank you yet again, Matt. 👍👍
It's also kind of incredible how faithful they are in many ways. Yes there are differences, but that is inevitable in any adaptation. They strike a good balance between being consistent with the books while being good movies in their own rights. Often one or the other of those takes over at the expense of the other
I always interpreted the "poisoning" of Theoden as purely psychological, not a substance to be administered. "And ever Wormtongue's whispering was in your ears, poisoning your thought, chilling your heart, weakening your limbs, while others watched and could do nothing, for your will was in his keeping."
The word leechcraft is ALSO used in the book. Leechcraft is being a "healer" and using "medicine" (herbs and such). Healing agents can also do damage if improperly administered. One can slow poison a person with "good medicine" if they know what they are doing, and Wormtongue had Saruman to advise him about such things.
I do wonder based on the other context in this section if perhaps this wasn’t one of the few ambiguous word choices Tolkien made. Also it to me seems akin to the influence Saruman wielded over Denethor using only the palantir. Based on this I wouldn’t logically assume that bringing Theoden to despair would require spells or substances. It certainly did make for an exciting scene though whatever you think of Jacksons interpretation.
Here is a true history fact: The very same troops will have TREMENDOUSLY different combat prowess when their king/leader orders them to "charge into battle" compared to when their king orders them to "follow me into battle". You can find this as true of many great heroes all across the world and time: Leonidas of Sparta, Ahuizotl of Tenochtitlan, Vlad Tepest the Impaler, Almiral Yi the Undefeated, Alexander Nevsky, and many others. Tolkien of course was a great history geek, the battle of Pelennor fields closely mimics a battle of old between a Roman-Goth aliance and Atila the Hun where Rohan is the Visigoth cavalry! All down to the point where the Visigoth king dies in combat and his son is crowned in the middle of the battle and continues guiding their troops.
It's also greatly based off of the Battle of Vienna in 1683. The Turks were besieging the city, and as it was close to falling the famous winged hussars arrived with all the Polish cavalry under King Jan Sobieski; largest cavalry charge in history of at least 20,000 or more relived the city that day.
I think it was inspired by the charge of the Polish cavalry (winged hussars) from the Kahlenberg during the siege of Vienna in 1683. But it might be both.
Great video as usual! Theoden is one of the most underrated characters. He is an absolute beast! Was compared to a Valar and was epic at the battle of Pelennor Fields!
Bernard Hill gave us a great gift with his portrayal in the movies. I fell in love with his character as a kid watching them for his bravery against impossible odds, his loyalty to his kin and people, his kindness towards all and his inspiration to others in the darkest of times. One of the best characters of the Third Age IMO, if not throughout all of the history of middle earth. The most notable of Kings of the Mark since Helm Hammerhand.

Another excellent, excellent video, sir. I applaud your skills, and appreciate getting a video about Theoden, who's always been one of my favorite characters in the saga.
As far as the movies are concerned, the Rohirrim arriving at the Pelennor Fields is one of my favorite scenes. Out of the darkness, their light shining from the West upon the hosts of Mordor, as though they were led by the Valar themselves. But they were led by Theoden, King of Rohan. 👑
Theoden is a real tragic hero for me, he tried so hard to be a good king for his people, but he lost his wife and son and then Grima corrupts him, in the end he dies under his own steed. This bittersweet story made me really sad.
Great video Matt! Theoden King was a great man among men.. he over came a lot during his time as King of the Riddermark. I think it fitting and things coming into full circle that not only did Aragorn/Thorongil fight with Thengel, but would come to Theoden’s aid later on. Though I did wish the movies had portrayed Theoden’s death scene the same way it was written in the book imo.
I'm getting so emotional! Not only was he a worthy king and excellent warrior, he was a kind man who inspired those he led to serve out of love and admiration. A truly good and noble man

It's blows my mind that from the time of Bilbo's eleventy-first birthday party to Frodo leaving the Shire with the ring is about 17 years, but from Kazad Dum, Lorien, the voyage down the river, the breaking of the fellowship, the tracking of the Uruk Hai to Fangorn, the return of Gandalf the White, the death of the king's son, the expulsion of Eomer, the exorcism of Theoden King, the exodus to Helm's Deep, the battle, the destruction of Isengard, the return to Edoras, Gondor calling for aide, the mobilizing of the Rohirim, getting passage through the woods, the Battle of the Pelenor Fields and the death of Theoden King was about 3 weeks...
It was in this instant that I preferred the Peter Jackson version of these events. For it gave Eowyn closure and overall it was a powerfully emotional moment. It was a father telling his daughter goodbye and to him a redemption of the failure he feels he made by falling victim to Grima and Saruman.
@Nerdoftherings I have a topic suggestion. Can you talk about the demographics of different regions in terms of numbers? With large armies in the 1st and 2nd ages, there had to have been massive casualties. But also how do you replenish those numbers? Can we discuss how big cities had to have been then and perhaps compare it to cities of today? Elves, dwarves, and men likely have different practices surrounding procreation so the difference in culture and lifespans would be cool to examine also. At any rate I thought this might be fun way to theorize about the deeper origins of armies. Killer channel! Keep it up!!
Your storytelling is wonderfully shown in this video! Indeed, I earnestly believe that Tolkien himself would be roused by this oratory of brilliance. For me, it stirs in me the desire to both pull out the book and watch the movies to compare each version of Theodin’s reawakening. Thank you for this marvelous addition to your anthology.
Amazing video, the only thing missing probably was the SIZE and importance of characters and appearances that followed Theodens body back to hes home country. Such escort will never been seen again.
when i read the trilogy for the first time, before i DARED to watch the movies, Theoden was one of my favorite characters in Rohan. It is great to see a tribute to such a character
A cool series idea would be comparing/contrasting the movies to the books. I got into LotR through the movies, but your many videos are helping me realize the greater story the books have to offer. While I wish to read them someday, I like your style of summarization.

Lol I didn’t remember. That’s great.
Thought they stayed in Lorien for a few weeks???😮
Not true . They stayed for a while in Lorien
6 months
This was a beautifully made episode.
It was in this instant that I preferred the Peter Jackson version of these events. For it gave Eowyn closure and overall it was a powerfully emotional moment. It was a father telling his daughter goodbye and to him a redemption of the failure he feels he made by falling victim to Grima and Saruman.
So it's begins welcomes me into the new year for the past 3 years and it's never gets old
@Nerdoftherings I have a topic suggestion.
Thank you once again, for providing such excellent quality content 💚💚💚
Wonderful was hoping for this for ages. Bring on eowyn and eomer
I really enjoyed this one. Thank you for the work that you do.
Thank you for making me cry today 😭😭😭💞
Amazing video, the only thing missing probably was the SIZE and importance of characters and appearances that followed Theodens body back to hes home country. Such escort will never been seen again.
Excellent! I'd love to see you do a video on Eomer sometime
amazing videos. I look forward to them every week!
Wow man! You almost had me there at Theoden's last words.
On reading the books, Theoden became firmly cemented as my favourite character
I legit cried when you were reading Theodens description during the battle of the pelanore fields
when i read the trilogy for the first time, before i DARED to watch the movies, Theoden was one of my favorite characters in Rohan. It is great to see a tribute to such a character
Great video. Interesting to see the differences between the books and the films
Thank you for yet another amazing video
Great video, This is great to see something a little different. Could you do one on the travels of Halbarad please. If I havent missed it that is
Great video. I would also love to learn more about Hanburihan and his people
Love everything you post! Keep it coming :) ty
Man, your thumbnails always look splendid!
A cool series idea would be comparing/contrasting the movies to the books. I got into LotR through the movies, but your many videos are helping me realize the greater story the books have to offer. While I wish to read them someday, I like your style of summarization.
Rest in Peace Bernard Hill, you will forever be our King
Theoden's speech 'ere the Battle of the Pelenor fields is one I find myself quoting word for word everytime, my favorite line being, "A Sword day! A Red Day! 'Ere the sun rises!!!!!"
DEATH! gives me chills every time
Theoden was so kind to Merry, he was like father for him ♥
Theoden was always my favourite character!
