    This video is on a brand new turntable from Pro-Ject, the Debut Carbon EVO. The new EVO model is the latest of an ever-evolving world-class turntable from Europe’s Pro-Ject Audio Systems. Like all Pro-Ject turntables, the Debut Carbon EVO is a manual, belt-drive turntable. This means you need to flip a switch to start things up, move the tonearm over the record, lower the cue lever, then raise the cue lever when the record ends. This is how almost 95% of turntables made today are designed as there is no need to put a bunch of gears and parts under the tonearm which could reduce the performance. Pro-Ject has usually offered a large range of color choices on some of their turntables and that tradition continues with the EVO being available in 7 different beautiful finishes. Pro-Ject builds many turntables that cost multi-thousands of dollars and like the previous models, the EVO is built to those same standards. Fit and finish is just top-notch, as is the box it comes packed in. Taking the EVO out of the box is a very easy process with all of the parts extremely well packed.
    The color choices, which by the way get an 8 coat lacquer finish, offer up high gloss black, white and red; satin black, white, fir green, golden yellow, and steel blue; plus a beautiful satin walnut finish. Pro-Ject recently introduced a new line of turntables in the X series which are much more expensive than the Debut range. From the looks of it, they took a lot of the tech from the X1 and filtered it down into the new EVO. Let’s look at some of this new tech. The three feet are height adjustable and made from a combination of a thermoplastic elastomer and aluminum. Pro-Ject uses the elastomer called TPE in many of their upper-end turntables and we can verify, it does an awesome job at damping out resonances. The feet are also pretty large in diameter giving the table a very stable base.
    The tonearm is a one-piece carbon fiber design. This is one beautiful tonearm with zero play in its special sapphire tonearm bearings. Pro-Ject could not really find a way to improve this arm, so it's the same as the DC version. Sumiko, the US importer of Pro-Ject, had been working on a new line of phono cartridges for years. They wanted something that was a great value from a cost/performance standpoint. Sumiko worked with a team of engineers in Yokohama, Japan to develop a whole new line up a couple of years ago. These new Oyster cartridges all have a new anti-resonant body and a special new generator system. They sound fantastic and have received tons of positive press around the world. One thing we love about the line is the first three models have an interchangeable stylus, so you can effectively start out with the entry-level Rainier, and should you wish when your stylus wears out and needs replacing, buy the stylus for a more expensive model and greatly improve your sound.
    The new EVO comes with the Rainier model mounted and aligned and we see many people opting to upgrade to the highly regarded Moonstone when it's time for a new stylus. We feel the Rainier is a pretty decent performance improvement over the Ortofon Red supplied with the DC model. Wiring inside the carbon fiber arm is a high purity copper with a separate shield that is one piece all the way to the very solid gold plated rear-mounted RCA jacks. The Connect-E cable is included with the EVO. This is a pretty serious RCA cable with great internal materials and is the same one supplied with their more expensive turntables. Pro-ject even compared different lengths and decided that 1.23 meters sounded the best. While the separate cable allows you to upgrade things later, this cable is very good.
    We have to say, after about an hour of listening to the new EVO with the Rainier, we feel this is one heck of an easy to listen to rig. Compared to more expensive tables it is lacking in very deep bass impact and it's not as dynamic as some $1000-$1500 tables, but geez, it's one incredible bargain for the price. The sound is never harsh, it tracks great, and just makes you want to pull out more records, always a winning combination! This table is simple to set up, easy to listen to and will get you really involved in the music. And we have saved the best part for last. Should you pick up an EVO and start really getting into vinyl, this table has several optional upgrades you can do to make it perform even better than it does right out of the box.

    I always laugh when people suggest that fully automatic turntables have "reduced performance" vis-a-vis manual turntables. Yet nobody has ever said exactly how this might happen or shown any sort of evidence that it does happen.

    How well do the new Oyster series handle IGD? That's a concern to me because I rip a lot of vinyl to my computer, and you can't get a nude and/or line contact stylus without buying the Amethyst because supposedly the stylus from that won't fit the other three lower models.

    The motor has always been the weak point in the Pro-Ject Debut series and one that always frustrated the hell out of me. It could be very noisy at times, giving a notable low-end buzzing sound that could never be removed. It's a welcome relief that this issue has finally been addressed with the Evo. I am hoping that this new motor design solves those problems. The new feet and platter designs are also welcome additions, and the Sumiko cartridge could be a nice improvement over the budget Ortofon.
    I really need to hear this deck in action. It could be the best Debut yet.

Several retailers are selling the DC model but not the EVO yet. I wonder how long it will last before it starts to pop up. • @michaelcruz7704
      @michaelcruz7704 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah that's true. I have a rega p1 and it's anti skate is not that good. Some records even though it's clean it sometimes skips or jumps. So enough of these kind of turntable. Better go with Technics or the audio Technica tables with a dedicated Anti skate adjustments.

    • @Oily_Jimm
      @Oily_Jimm 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That Anti-skate isn't cheesy it's actually the optimal way of doing it, the skating forces increase as you travel towards the centre of rotation (the spindle in this case), therefore you need higher anti-skating as the stylus tracks the inner grooves. With this weighted anti-skate gravity causes greater down forces as the weight raises, thus increasing anti-skate in accordance to the increased skate forces. This is the proper way to have accurate anti-skate as magnetic anti-skate is fixed at a specific force as as such will more often lead to greater inner groove distortion and greater wearing of the outer walls of the grooves. :)

    I have purchased many turntables in the last year and a half, from Music Hall, Audio Technica and even Crosley belt drive tables. The Music Hall is an over price hunk of plastic, very microphony, the Audio Technical is similar and has an odd headshell. Crosley seemed promising, but the anti-skate did not work. All have a noisey motor / belt transport, all do not run consistently on speed.I purchased the Carbon EVO as I have an older Project RPM 6 that is practically perfect. The Carbon EVO has a noticable low whirry sound and that is disappointing! For $600 this item should be dead quiet! I had a Pioneer PL10 belt drive turntable for 35 years that I accidently dropped a decade ago, thus the purchase of the RPM6, it was dead quiet. After 50 years we can't make stuff that runs on speed! The Pioneer was $100 with a Grado cart back in 1975!
    Overall ok, but I am not truly happy with the state of so-called mid priced turntables.

      Rory- it is possible your EVO was shipped upside down (it happens all the time) and the motor bearing had oil leak out. If you purchased it from Audio Advice, we can send you a syringe of motor oil, if not Pro-Ject does sell vials of their motor oil. We did a video on how to put it in a Rega motor, but the same holds for a Pro-Ject www.audioadvice.com/videos-reviews/rega-turntable-tips-and-tricks/ Thanks for watching

    I want to know how many people swap their cartridge and basically ruin their entire setup for that "rare occasion" where they feel like spinning a 78 RPM... this never happens, right? :)

    don't use it to play 78s without a suitable stylus designed for them, otherwise you'll fuck the sumiko up

    This is a fantastic sales video. But please don’t call it a review, because that’s just misleading.

      Greetings Szymon! We appreciate your point that this was a super positive review. A few points we should have made. First, the EVO turntable is simply best of breed in terms of turntables, and it really stands out. The second point is that for every review we do, there are dozens of products we don't put out videos on. In other words, we simply don't waste people's time with reviews and comparisons on products that we don't believe in. The third point is that our individual reviews are where we dive deeper into any of the negatives if there are any to call out. Link to the full-written review is here: www.audioadvice.com/pro-ject-debut-carbon-evolution-turntable Thanks for watching!

    I still own and use one of the very first Project turntables, the Project one. Back then it bore the name Remy A. Thorens Project one. It,s over 35 years old and still working fine. The only problem that showed up after some time was that the metal platter deformed. I replaced it with a acrylic one. Problem solved but it shoud not have happend. I mounted a Linn cartridge and having no complains at all.

    Turntable in this video does not look as nice as the original Debut Carbon DC. Missing is high gloss black and the nice Red Needle. "The Look" is a prime reason why so many went for the original.

    An embarrassing product, little more than a toy. Just a few months after the warranty expired, and used no more than 3 or 4 times a week, the motor started making a distinctly audible noise. This seems to be a common issue, as discussed on various forums. Pro-Ject is anything but pro. A big disappointment.
