PRO-JECT DEBUT EVO TURNTABLE - IS THIS THE BEST BUDGET TURNTABLE UNDER £500?

  • The latest in the ever-growing Debut series of turntables, Paul Rigby reviews this new EVO design from the Austrian company and compares it to the Rega RP1, the Audio-Technica LP5x and the Rega RP3. This is an ‘out of the box’ only series of tests with no cartridge upgrades. Ditto with the other turntable comparisons.

    I am now planning a future video in which I will try my darnedest to mod the EVO. The idea is to utilise items such as an Acrylic platter, a VTA adjustment plate (with Quintet Blue cartridge), an Aluminium sub-platter upgrade, new isolation feet plus upgrade mats. Its going to take a little while to arrange and gather this gear together but, be assured, it's on the way!

      I am returning to vinyl after almost 40 years. I have this turntable in the US with the Sumiko Ranier. Can you look at that, too? How does it compare to the Ortofon? And how would upgrading to the Sumiko Moonstone stylus with the same cartrdge benefit my listening experience? Enjoy your videos. Thanks!

    Excellent review, thank you.
    Bought my Pro-Ject 1 back in the early/mid 90's and it's still going strong, not a single fault. Prompted me to buy a debut carbon after considering others and it's been the same, utterly reliable.
    Have to say my daughter's LP5 does give off a tingle though and puts a smile on my face, it's a bargain and great fun.
    When I can get into a store again I'm hoping to test an AT-LPW50PB. Just fancy a bit of that fun for myself 😂🍻

    I’ve been researching for a couple of months on my very first entry-level turntable. For the longest I’ve been looking at the Rega-Planar 1…. After watching this and a couple other audiophile reviews I believe I’ve reached a tipping point and am going ahead in this direction. This is a cracking, top-shelf review. Well done.

      I was the same way. Planar 1 is nice but this just gives more upgrade options and I like the tone arm, a solid choice.

    I've recently bought this turntable because I was curious. Also, I made a new set-up with a Nagaoka MP-150 cartridge. What shall I say: All my expectations were exceeded - it seems to be impressive both quality in general and listening experience. This record player is here to stay!

    Fantastic review. I’ve had a Project Debut Carbon for about 10 years. I love it so much that I bought the Evo recently and set it up today on a second hi-fi system I’ve been fortunate enough to build. I would add something to the conversation but this review checks all the boxes. Buy with confidence, fellow enthusiasts.

    I bought a Fluance rt-85 recently after a lot of research. The reason I chose it was for three reasons - 1 it comes with an Ortofon 2m Blue (nude stylus) cartridge and 2 a removable headshell..3 an acrylic platter. I am nearly 83 years old and this will be the last tt i will buy...I have been an audiophile before vintage gear was available...The sound of a turntable imo is really based on the best cartridge you can afford..along with what type of amplifier and speakers you use...I also own a vintage taya tt with a Shure V15II cartridge that sounds just as good...loved your review though..

    The Rega Planar 2 , is only 399 pound and has a better tonearm and glass platter. Would be highly upgraded using the 2M red cart.

    I enjoyed this review, as always! A few people have mentioned the difference with carts. Maybe an idea for a vid would be to take a popular beginner deck (P2 level) and try a few carts out. I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on the popular choices and maybe some left-field picks.

    • @TheAudiophileMan
      @TheAudiophileMan  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, as I said in the pinned post at the top there, modding this turntable is planned. That includes cartridges. Hopefully that will help, even if only a bit because the video won't be wholly cart centric. Otherwise, sure I can have a think about a wider cartridge test. The said, the turntable and arm are going to have a big say in the results so I wonder just how valuable the results will be on a broader level - especially for those not interested in the reference turntable used in the tests. Something to consider, though.

    Just purchased this as my first turntable! Thanks for the very helpful and insightful review! It was easy to understand for an absolute beginner like me. As someone who had only used my brother's automatic turntable, do you have a video on how to use a "manual(?)" Turntable for an absolute beginner? Something like where to place the needle on a vinyl, upkeep, and just general good practices. Although it might might fit the purview of this channel

    • @TheAudiophileMan
      @TheAudiophileMan  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I can certainly consider it, sure. For now: place the needle on the run-in part of the vinyl on the very outside. You'll normally see a bump or lip at the edge of a record...just inside that bit is where you want to place the needle or stylus as I call it. Look at the part in the light, it will look different from the inner grooves. It will look shinier. This bit is silent before the music starts.
      Upkeep? Keep the turntable dust free, keep liquids away from it. You should be fine mechanically for some time, especially with a new model.

    The American offering of the EVO includes a Sumiko Ranier instead of the Ortofon 2M Red. I wonder which of the two performs better. I'm guess that the Sumiko setup is, but I'd love to hear a first-hand review. I have compared 2M Blue and Red on my RT85 and was underwhelmed by the brashness of both (with the Blue sounding almost the same but with better inner groove performance). I honestly prefer the more open/subtle Audio Technica VTM95SH, at least on the RT85.

  • @StylusDrop
    @StylusDrop 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The pressed steel platter sets alarm bells ringing in my head for a different reason. Not because it could have rung like a bell (suitable platter mats could have helped with that issue if present), but because steel is magnetic which could adversely affect the performance of the magnetic cartridge. Your comparison with the Rega RP1 was interesting but was that comparison done with the crappy Rega Carbon cartridge? If so then it would be interesting to re-do the comparison with an upgraded cartridge fitted to the RP1 (e.g. Ortofon 2M Red, or Audio Technica AT-VM95E).

    • @TheAudiophileMan
      @TheAudiophileMan  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      And don't forget the record itself, in terms of magnetism. A good mat will help shield the cartridge from the platter but it an intriguing point you've made.
      As for your other point? I addressed this in the description and the pinned post above. This is an out of the box test. Each deck arrives as a package and I reviewed the package only. In this respect, changing the cart would be unfair to first-time buyers. I am considering a future modding video on the EVO which could include cart upgrades and comparisons of the type you mentioned.

    • @StylusDrop

      I normally do retain the same cartridge but in this case, I’m reviewing the package, off the shelf. As you would hear it out of the box. To change the cart would then involve an upgrade dimension and thus not consistent with the first sonic experience or what I was aiming for here. I should have explained that in the video.

      If you're watching a review and they play a sound sample then you're wasting your time, Larry. You're not hearing the turntable or the cartridge. You're hearing the device that's playing your video. Nothing more than that. Even if you hear changes in 'tone' during the video, that sound has nothing to do with the original hardware.

    I have a very quick question relating to what is seemingly a Debut Carbon Evo clone (in terms of design at least): have you come across the Teac TN-280BT-A3 at all?
    This table seems to have all the things I desire as someone who is marginally beyond being a beginner to the hobby (e.g. adjustable counterweight, anti-skate, upgradable cartridge, etc., as well as Bluetooth, which would suit my temporary audio rig-up atm). It also is the same price at the AT120xBT, which was the other table I was investigating, yet it has more minimalist design like the Evo that would suit my living room. However, my big issue: there are very few reviews on TH-cam and *none of them* mention the actual sound! 😅
    If you had a moment, any thoughts you might have if you are familiar with this turntable (or if you might think of / see something a beginner might not notice!)
