I just started following your channel and find you're doing excellent reviews, PLUS, going by the shirt you're wearing you're almost in the same neighborhood I grew up in back in the '50s, Redford off Plymouth and Inkster. I wish I were in good enough health to make the trip back there to see what's changed and what hasn't in 60 years.
The last time I purchased a new turntable was around 1985. I purchased a Denon with a servo arm, AT-130e cart etc. around $450.00 just knocked me out. I gave it away by mistake. I just purchased a new TT since that grievous loss/mistake. I purchased a U-Turn Theory, 3 year warranty Ortofon Bronze for about $1,000.00 and it is a great sounding manual belt drive. It sounds very good and looks almost great as well. Cris, you might look at the U-Turn line sometime as you build your own and warranty can’t be beat, customer service is spot on and quick. They are out of Massachusetts.
I have a REGA P1 plus in RSD limited edition (it have a pre amp integrated) and I'm very happy. I will probably change the cartige with a Bias2 to increase the sound quality.
Don't know if you've changed cartridge yet...if not, don't be in too much of a hurry! The 'Carbon' that comes supplied may be a re-badged Audio Technica AT91 (NOT the 3600L) cartridge, but it rivals and betters many cartridges up over the £200-ish range, just in it's subtlety and ease of bass, it's dynamics, and overall smooth tone, with a lovely sheen on the top-end; cymbals sound like REAL cymbals!! Many cartridges can't do that! The arm it's attached to helps it too.... that Rega RB110 arm is a very high quality tonearm; it may be lowest of the Rega range, but that doesn't mean it's no good; it's better than most arms on turntables currently available under a £1000... just feel the silky-smooth bearings as you move and use it! Quality! The only way to improve on that is to change to a P2 or P3, etc.... The Carbon cartridge just works in that arm, and sounds sublime! I have the slightly older RP1 turntable with the RB101 tonearm, that includes Bias/Anti-Skate adjustment, and have considered many times upgrading the Carbon, but then changing my mind; it just sounds so good with this deck!! :-D
Just got the Fir Green Debut Carbon Evo 4 days ago. Upgraded from an AT LP120, which I'm passing down to our son. I love the Evo, sounds and looks great.
Honorable mention: the Fluance RT-85 which comes with the Ortifon 2m Blue and acrylic platter. The best under $500 imo in looks, build quality and sound.
Well done, Chris! And I like your final, "There's an age old adage, not only do you listen with your ears, but also with your eyes. A good looking product make you want to play it!"
Thank you. I just subbed! I never thought getting back into vinyl would happen again after a long hiatus from it. I have a plan and thanks to your real reviews I now have direction.
Any plans on releasing a 2022 update? Prices seem to have exploded recently in the US, knocking your top 2 out of the sub-500 price range. I’m curious if that change would have you include the fluance 85, variants of the uturn orbit, or lower tier models from Pro-ject. Big fan of your channel. The content is incredible and the production value is superb.
These are great recommends and at the level of knowledge a beginner needs. Killer job. Keep your table true and on a sturdy surface. Think about additional vibration control, even DIY.
almost thought about buying one of those little vinyl destroyers! thank you! I grew up listening to CDs and in high school you either had an ipod or still loved your cds. I absolutely noticed cheap players resulted in CD scratches, so im not dumbfounded but it makes absolute sense vinyl is able to be damaged. as you can tell, very new here.

@@svenschwingel8632 congrats! 🤘 I bought a JVC QL-A51 new in 1984 and it has been my main TT ever since. Here we are in 2021 and it looks and runs like new.
Getting back into vinyl and looking get reacquainted with my neglected collection. The Evo is so appealing and it's really the one I want but if I'm honest with myself, one of the fluance TTs is probably a better fit for me since they stop turning at the end of the record. I keep researching thinking something is going to pop up that will make me finally make a decision. But I'm still waffling. I'd kind of decided on the Fluance 85 but coming across your video this evening has brought me back to analysis paralysis.
The AT-LP3 is a similar, but superior option to the AT-LP60. Still fully-automatic and belt-driven, it comes with a better cartridge and a removeable headshell for easy future upgrades. It also has a manual counterweight and tracking. There is also a switch that allows you to use MM as well as MC cartridges, although buying an expensive MC cartridge to use with this particular turntable seems counterproductive to me; you would probably be better off buying a higher-end turntable. Basically it fits in between the LP60 and LP120X in the Audio-Technica lineup. Honestly, I think it is a better starter table than either one.
Hi Chris, This is Gopal from Mumbai India. I just started watching your videos and I find them crisp, to the point and VERY useful. Thanks for putting up these videos. Regards Gopala

I will be swapping my upgraded Ortofon 2m blue from my RT81 to the Debut and vice versa. I’m not ready to upgrade my Schmitt Mani yet though as it sounds epic paired with my Swan M3A powered speakers. If you haven’t heard the M3A’s, I highly recommend them. They are the best speakers I have heard anywhere near the price. I’m talking phenomenal sound. They are probably the best hidden gem in audio right now. Also, great video!

Hi Chris. From Victoria BC and New to your channel. So far so good. You sure know your stuff and its a pleasure to here what you have to say. I have the Project Carbon. Unfortunately I have it in my shop and pop vinyl in it every so often so I don't get the benefit as others do. I'm a diy'er and have made and restored multiple speakers for people. One day I'll have a great listening room to experience what I know I'm missing. Thanks for all the info.
Love seeing the Rega make the list, it's usually left out for being too 'pricey' but you do get what you pay for. I have a P1 (running through a cambridge audio AXA35 integrated amp and cambridge audio SX50 bookshelf speakers) and absolutely love it. If/when I upgrade, it's going to be to a P3, just love Rega so much.
First one of your videos that I've seen, great reviews. And to see that you're in my original hometown of Garden City Michigan....wow, like Steven Wright said, "It's a small world, but I wouldn't want to paint it." Subscribed as soon as saw that info. Thanks Chris, now I need to try and decide which TT to go with, also need to look at your video on adjusting a tonearm... So long from San Diego.
Nice video! I really like that Fluance TT. Maybe that will be my next one (that bamboo looks cool). Currently I have the AT-LP120USB (not the current model). I have had mine since about 2012/13. Have never had an issue out of it and we used it almost every day. Pretty solid. I did swap out the AT-95E for an AT-100E (which is no longer made) and it sounds even better. I just keep the 95E as backup. Have never really been disappointed in my decision for an Audio-Technica (I know some people call them Hanpin crap but I've gotten a ton of play time out of it). I also like the U-Turn Orbit. It's always fun to look around but I just don't have the need for more than one TT. Ok, off to check your link for Fluance so I can get a better look and "window shop".

I love the pace, the atmosphere and the perfectly clear explanations that go with every turntable you introduce. Thanks for this amazing review. I have watched this video a few times over the pas few weeks, so I could make the right choice... The thing is, I'm in Japan, and the only turntable that's actually affordable (meaning, no insanely high shipping and import fees from the UK or the US) is the Planar 1 MK2. I really made a lot of research because I love the look of the Fluance RT (83 or 85) or the Pro-Ject Debut, but these two are just impossible to find at the right price in Japan. Right now, I'm thinking about setting up the Planar 1 MK2 with the Denon PMA600NE and Q-Acoustics speakers (3020i or 3030i?). Not sure it is the right combination yet but every time I dig more about turntables, I'm completely lost and feel I have to start all over again :D Any opinion on this set up is welcome!
I have the Fluance and upgraded it with the Audio Technica AT-VM95ML. What a massive upgrade. It basically eliminates any inner groove distortion and to my ears it eliminates this slight smearing that I hear on the Ortofon. If someone picks up the Fluance I totally recommend picking up that microline stylus.
You went from a $99 Ortofon 2M Red cartridge to a $67 VM95E? Interesting that you're more pleased. But we each hear differently. I want to hear the Sumiko Olympia cartridge @ $199. Have read great things about it's quality. Supposedly better than Ortofon 2M Blue $239.
@@blakebruner6173 i actually upgraded to the microline but the audio technica elliptical also sounds better than that dreadful 2M Red. The 2M Red tracks poorly to a point that the last track on every side sounds distorted. I have tried it in four different tables, aligning it, trying to adjust the tracking force to see if that would fix it, that cartridge to me is just flawed. The audio technica cheap conical actually tracks better. The microline though, night and day for a few dollars more.
I have had an ATLP60BT since COVID started. I wanted to upgrade it so I just purchased the AT LP120xBT. It sounds so much better and I think I have more leeway to upgrade things on it vs the LP60. I hope to keep this for a few years and maybe upgrade again if the hobby love is still there, LOL
Hi Chris! Thanks for this great top 5 under $500(ish). Out of curiosity, I see you have the Fluance RT83 in the list, but not the RT85. How do you feel the RT85 stacks up against the Pro-Ject Debut Carbon EVO? I’ve seen a few YT vids out there by others, but trust your point of view.
the older Japanese direct drive turntables have MUCH better wow and flutter specs. The reason Rega ( and even companies like Thorens), do not post the W&F spec because they hope you won't find out how far off the speed accuracy is. If you have never had a direct drive turntable you may not notice, but if you do get a DD table you will notice a differece.
All the quality tables that I've checked out in recent years have listed wow and flutter. The lower end models might not, but I don't think that's a big surprise.
Taking the supplied cartridge out of the conversation, since I have one that I’ll use instead, would you go with the EVO or the RT85? The acrylic platter upgrade is really making me lean towards the 85 where the carbon fiber tonearm is pulling me towards the EVO. Thanks and love your content!
I strongly recommend against the ATLP60. The lack of anti skate made all of my records skip. It worked well for a week and then I couldn’t get anything to play through.
I've never been in a bigger hurry to get rid a piece of stereo gear than with that AT120. I found it to be atrociously poor, with many deal-breaking flaws. I even exchanged it because I thought it must've been defective, but the replacement had the same exact issues. The LP60 is actually a way better turntable IMO, but any of the other three are a much better choice. I really wanted to love it, but it was just straight up horrendous. Buyer beware.
Great list, btw. I’ll add that the Music Hall Classic, with its’ fine included and aligned MM cart on a P-mount and its semi-auto lift is a STEAL, even at $599…yes that’s 100 over your budget, but, it’s worth the extra 99 over anything on this list, as good as this list is!
I'm also looking at the Fluance but the RT85 as you get an acrylic platter w/it. Thanks for the tip on a decent pre-amp. That's another solid piece of advice here as you get some traction in this hobby you will almost certainly need one at some point and could easily be another video review! Well done and thanks for posting this here :)
I agree with your choices, even to the point where I purchased a Pro-ject turntable before I saw this video. Your observations confirm what I've learned about budget turntables.
I chose a Pro Ject Debut Carbon several years ago and have upgraded it with the new aluminum sub platter, the acrylic main platter, the 2M Blue stylus and better inter connects. I wish the feet were adjustable for leveling purposes.
I found this video after I made a purchase of a new turntable. Had been loving music for over 55 years and conclude I not a very smart person. I have gone the route of vinyl to CD and now digital on my I phone. Spent a good amount of money looking for the best method and now closing in at being 70 yrs old decided I had it already in vinyl. I thought my record collection was junk and went to digital years back. Somehow I got smart, bought a vinyl record cleaning kit and a new turn table. I need to toss a few albums but most of my collection plays great and the sound to me is better. I feel the turntable was a big influence and is the Pro Ject Debut model.
Thank you! My daughter asked for a turntable for her birthday and yes, too many choices! I would like something mid-range that doesn't need additional equipment, but that doesn't ruin records either. Also blue-tooth and headphones jacks are a must since she's in a shared space.
Good video with great explanations of all the turntables. Why not vintage, lower price better specs. Still get a sl 1200mkll or JVC QL 7 for under 400. A under appreciated Technics sl dl1 for 100 bucks perhaps? 15:22

Very interesting... I'm not sure ANY of my old vinyl is up to par enough for the fancy of these players, but when/if I'm back in the market at least I'll know what to look for!
Very organized and professional presentation. Informative too. I have the Pro-Ject. I have a powerful 12 in sub and was worried that I might have some feedback or skipping issues when I cranked the volume. To my delight, there were no such issues.
When I was much younger. Reel to reel, Vinyl and 8 track cartridges were state of the art. Today pressings of new vinyl are very affordable, considering the fact that that in 1970. It took a couple of hours worth of my then low wages. Just to buy one vinyl LP.

TT is connected to Musical Fidelity V90 LPS and Musical Fidelity M2si.
Hey there,
How much better did you find the AT VM95E?
@@CameronPriceJ Hi for the money it’s a massive improvement over the Carbon. But am thinking of fitting Elys 2 as I’m being told that’ll be a huge hike in performance..

Ugggh! I feel like I am deep in the weeds trying to pick out a turntable in the 500 or less realm.
Your review was most substantial I have found.
I hope it was able to help narrow down some decisions for you.
@@thevinylattack Yes, some good thoughts. I have had a AT-LP140X in my cart for a week or two trying to decide. I know you did not review it specifically, but what you said about 120 combined with what I've read are positive.
@@philipadams3325 Sounds like you're well on your way with the research.
Well after forever trying to decide I bought a Fluance RT85.
@@philipadams3325 I'm sure you'll enjoy it for years to come. Well done.
I recently upgraded my TT from the AT60XBT to the Fluance RT83 and wow, what a difference it made! I paired it with the Project Phono box MM into Jamo 801 powered speakers with a Yamaha sub. Just getting back into vinyl after 30+ years and loving it. Love your channel and I look forward to more of your content.
You may consider buying the acrylic platter down the line as they sell it separately on the Fluance website.
You’re a natural! Looking forward to more videos.
I appreciate the kind words. More to come soon!
It's changed quite a bit.
Great video and a great new channel. The fluance rt series is fantastic 👍🏻
Thanks for the input. I agree, those Fluance tables are hard to beat at that price range.
I bet it looks sharp in person.

If it ain't broke...
Still have my PL-12D from when I was 17 and the SX-424 receiver. Never give them up.
Enjoyed your video was surprised that you didn't have everyone's darling the Fluance RT85.
At that price, I just feel the Pro-Ject is a better buy. But, that's just my opinion...
Honorable mention: the Fluance RT-85 which comes with the Ortifon 2m Blue and acrylic platter. The best under $500 imo in looks, build quality and sound.
It's a very good table.
Well done, Chris!
And I like your final, "There's an age old adage, not only do you listen with your ears, but also with your eyes. A good looking product make you want to play it!"
I've found it to be accurate over the years.

It's definitely on my mind.
Excellent advice! Thank you, sir! also - your beard styling is amazing if I'm allowed to say so. As a bearded man myself, I recognize the greatness!
These are great recommends and at the level of knowledge a beginner needs. Killer job. Keep your table true and on a sturdy surface. Think about additional vibration control, even DIY.

I am using the AT-LP60X-USB to archive my records into lossless digital files for playing when on the go.
almost thought about buying one of those little vinyl destroyers! thank you! I grew up listening to CDs and in high school you either had an ipod or still loved your cds.
You'll not go wrong with the Fluance. If that fits your lifestyle better, I can assure you it'll be money well spent.
Hi jennifer did you end up getting a fluance because I'm in the same boat and not sure
Wow! You’re so knowledgeable! Thank you for making this video!
Thanks for watching!
It's also $100 more than the LP60 and some people just can't swing that.
The Fluance 82 for the same money is a better sounding table.. automatic turntables are for pussies :)
Hi Chris, This is Gopal from Mumbai India. I just started watching your videos and I find them crisp, to the point and VERY useful. Thanks for putting up these videos.

I just upgraded from the Fluance RT81 to the Debut Carbon Evo with the acrylic platter upgrade. It gets delivered tomorrow. I can’t wait.
I haven't heard them actually. I'll see if I can't get my hands on some for a demo. Thanks for the heads up.
Upgrading your Schiit Mani to what? If I may ask.
@@joeymartinez8977 I upgraded to a Vincent PH-701 tube preamp and rolled the tube. Don’t remember the tube at the moment. It’s pretty great. I also moved my 2M blue back to the RT81/Mani after upgrading my Debut Carbon Evo to the 2M Bronze.
You rock man, thank you for your review. About to do some online shopping...
I just bought myself an Pro-Ject Debut Carbon Esprit. It sounds great and looks great. The anti-skate could be better but overall I’m quite happy. It has a much smoother top end than my old Pro-Ject Elemental, which is good as I’m quite sensitive to treble
Pro-Ject is killing it with the affordable mid-tier tables these days. The platter on that Esprit is a really nice upgrade to combat resonance.
I have one and have upgraded the cartridge, subplatter and power supply and use the ground-it platform; this transformed a good deck into a great one!
Got the Pro-ject debut carbon Evo - thanks for the help and recommendation.

Right on!
te lower end regas suffer from being supplied with poor-quality cartrdges, go for the rp3 as your minimum standard
The P1 works fine for me and the sound is better than a Debut Carbon with an Ortofon Red. When I do upgrade in a few years time, it will be to a P6.

@Iron Reagan I haven't changed the stylus on my P1, I've been happy with what it came with.
Your hiding videos are extremely helpful. Thank you!
I was told that the LP12 Klimax was the best but then looked at price 😯 So I’m thinking your number 5 choice seems like a good choice 👍🏼
Sounds like you're happy with your setup and that's truly all that matters.
My daily driver is a Pioneer PL117D with an Audio-Technica AT-VMN95ML - using the ART Pro Audio DJ PRE II Phono Preamplifier connected to a DBX 3BX Series II, the Behringer Ultragraph Pro FBQ3102 and my Pioneer VSX 933 - strictly for playing my vinyl collection -
I love the pace, the atmosphere and the perfectly clear explanations that go with every turntable you introduce.
If you're in Japan you might simply look at used Technics SL 1200's. They're everywhere over there and they're really affordable.
Great review and overview of top contenders. Synthesized a lot of information and provided reasonable judgments without hyperbole.
Thanks.
It's a good table to experiment on with upgrades.
Great video! How about a best players 500 - 1000?
It's something I've put on the list, thanks!
So glad to find your channel. Great review!

With the cost of the Evo rising about $500 these days, the 85 might be the very best choice at that range.
Excellent top 5 list and special thx for the honourable mention coz I have never heard about the u-turn and now I am going to check it out ;-)
They're definitely worth a look.
@@thevinylattack unfortunately, they don't work in 230v-land yet, but I will stay tuned
btw 200$ for a product "Made in the USA" is unbelievable
the older Japanese direct drive turntables have MUCH better wow and flutter specs.
The higher end Audio zTechnica is an almost carbon copy of the 1978 Tecnics SL series to I own which is as good as an affordable to gets
I haven't had any experience with that one.
It'd definitely tough to find a decent table at that cost.
Bought the Pro-Ject Debut Carbon Evo ... love it. Since I'm in Europe (Holland) I got the Ortofon 2M Red. Might upscale to the Blue one. Thanks.
The RT 85 is a nice table as well.

If a turntable has Bluetooth, you can just use Bluetooth headphones. One less thing to worry about.
Man, what a great way to explain things... SUBSCRIBED!

Good video with great explanations of all the turntables. Why not vintage, lower price better specs. Still get a sl 1200mkll or JVC QL 7 for under 400. A under appreciated Technics sl dl1 for 100 bucks perhaps? 15:22
Mainly because the vintage market is overwhelming to many new people in the hobby, and the used market fluctuates too much to make a proper list.

When I was much younger. Reel to reel, Vinyl and 8 track cartridges were state of the art. Today pressings of new vinyl are very affordable, considering the fact that that in 1970. It took a couple of hours worth of my then low wages. Just to buy one vinyl LP.
