When I first saw this in the theater, I almost felt the urge to laugh a little bit at that part, but a huge part of me was pretty scared of Heath's depiction of The Joker by this point in the film.

That was actually an unscripted part of the movie. Heath irl was waiting for the bigger explosion so he played along until it happened. Also they had one chance of doing it so it makes sense
This is Joker. It’s such a serious situation, a hospital is being blown up, people are being kidnapped, the district attorney having just suffered a tremendous loss has been set loose, and Heath just makes it hilarious.

I remember my dad took me to see this in IMAX opening weekend when I was 10. Theater was JAM-PACKED with people dressed as either Batman or Joker. It was like being at the Super Bowl, the entire theater erupted in applause/cheers for a solid 10 minutes during and after this scene. Christopher Nolan clearly did something right when an entire theater cheered over the villain blowing up a hospital!

Shocking that the whole thing was improvised. Apparently they weren't gonna demolish the hospital, but during filming Heath Ledger secretly planted C-4 through-out the building. Amazing performance and dedication to the role.

Edit: since so many people are like “what?” It was a hospital in Chicago that was going to be demolished, with the usual wrecking ball cranes or whatever but the directors got permission to rig it with explosives for this scene instead.
Additionally, pressing the button twice when the explosions stopped was completely improv.
And Heath actually improvised rapidly pressing the switch after explosion didn't fully go off.
Heath also improvised wearing a nurse's uniform. He came to set wearing it from a wild party the night before. Nolan liked it so much he kept it in the movie.
And the bus was there by accident originally he was supposed to fly away by unicorn with jack nicholson but Nolan liked the bus and kept it

I remember when they filmed this scene here in Chicago, they actually blew up a fucking building for it. The old Brach's candy factory was vacated and had been scheduled for demolition anyway, so they allowed the film crew to turn it into a hospital set and explode it.

Ledger was confused why are the bombs are not working until the bombs went working again. The director didn't cut the error and continue shooting it(so he didn't know he improvised the scene).

Before the Joker, Gotham was run by the mob, the police were corrupt, the courts were corrupt, a vigilante was running around the city...etc. However, when the Joker came he stopped it all in a villainous plan. At the end, he even managed to bring the people of Gotham together and reminded them what was really important (ferry scene). The beginning of the movie, we see the Joker robbing the bank controlled by the mob. He destroys the mobs money and ultimately the mob. I think Chris Nolan intended this when he made Heath Ledger's Joker. And yes, Ledger did such a marvelous performance playing the Joker, you are cheering for him the entire move. So basically he is a hero, a dark hero, but a hero. Google this idea and some have provided really comprehensive study on this idea. This is what make The Dark Knight one of the best movies ever made.

For Jack Nicholson it wasnt really a hospital, more of a hideout for a crazy underworld doctor
I always saw the symbolism as hospitals help people who are sick, joker is beyond helping, so it’s only natural that the two are interacting with each other. And in later renditions joker is typically “helping” society see their true selves. He’s pessimistic, but he ultimately wants to just change the world because he knows how terrible it is.

Did you know that explosion scene midway Heath Ledger actually improvised that scene? Because they couldn't do more takes and an explosion wouldn't go off So Heath Ledger completely improvised the rest of the scene when the explosion happened you see he jumps a bit.

Ryan Speer the scene was shot essentially as it appears. In behind the scenes footage as well as the rehearsals and animatic created prior to filming the scene, there was always, from the beginning, meant to be this moment where the explosions stop, Joker turns around, the rest of the explosions go off and be rides off in a bus. Christopher Nolan has even said that it was all apart of the plan and actually a safety precaution. “[Special effects supervisor Chris Corbould] was able to come up with a scenario in which Heath could actually be walking out of the building because what Chris worked out is if we put in a little beat where the first set of explosions stops as if something's gone wrong, and the Joker just takes a second to look around surprised like the audience is surprised, then the major demolition comes in and he jumps straight into the school bus. In that way he was able to come up with a practical scenario in which we could actually take a principal actor, walk him out of a building that's about to be destroyed, and literally drop the building to the ground.”

@@inafridge8573 Not to mention, im pretty sure when Heath pressed the button the first time, it was meant to completely blow up the hospital with the bigger explosion, but when he pressed the button the explosion didnt happen, so he had to improvise on the spot until the explosion happened.

@@3e1est89 They dont give actors detonators, hes using a prop. Theres a pyrotechnics team who actually detonate the explosives, its safer so heath can act, and should something so wrong the pyro team can shut it down and alert everyone to clear the set. That pause was planned, it was intentionally delayed. Nolan himself said this in the behind the scenes featurette.

No. It was supposed to blow up all at once, but didn't. When you see him turn around and raise his arms etc it's cause the building was supposed to blow up. The whole part of him getting outside to checking the detonator etc. was improvised.
There is another shot that didn’t get used of Heath in the bus and it shows he still doesn’t look back at the hospital. What a fantastic actor, will always remain the greatest joker actor ever. Rip Heath ❤️❤️
This scene is just as equally iconic as Maralyn Monroe's white dress skirt flying upwards from the steamers. The only difference is the Joker leaves with a bang. 💖🧨
