Nicholas Lyndhurst is a very underrated actor. Just from Fool and Horses alone, watch his performance, he's one of the best reactors in the business. His facial expressions, his timing, without saying hardly anything, he makes Del's lines even funnier by the way he reacts to them.
Perhaps I am riddled with nostalgia and fond memories making me bias but I have to say that Only Fools was one of those shows where they got everything right in the comedy formula. The actors, the settings, the characters and the writers and scripts. Even as a youngster in the 80s I really enjoyed watching Only Fools and Horses though I probably didn't understand a lot of the adult jokes and references. Ahhh, memories. Everyone glued round the telly watching the likes of Only Fools and Horses, the Two Ronnies, Russ Abbott.... Way back when you could settle down for the evening in front of the box and be spoiled for TV choice for the entire evening. Today I barely watch TV it has gotten so pathetic. Comedy and comedy writers today just aren't that clever. They need to swear every few seconds or be vulgar to get shock value. They are bound by crazy political correctness because it seems the country has turned into a bunch of nancies that take offense to everything. Such a shame. Anyone remember the Worm that Turned by the Two Ronnies? LOL
@@classicartfoundation639 and i agree. you named yourself lockdown society before lockdown. you're a very clever person. it's nice to see some people know what's really going on.
I watched Only fools and horses in the ‘80s and found it so funny, but very typical characteristic of 80s English working class hustlers and family values. I never imagined this aspect of Englishness would make sense or be familiar and funny to people from other European countries. In 2005 I worked in Eindhoven with a Serbian colleague from Belgrade and he loved this comedy, Alllo Alllo, and Fawlty Towers. I was astonished because he was still a kid during the Balkan Wars of the early 90s and I didn’t think he even had a TV. I was also surprised how many other colleagues from Netherlands Germany, Austria, Italy, Greece, Romania,Poland, were in love with British comedy... The first time I realised that British humour had strong international currency.
Well, Serbs like these series quite a lot, but there is something they liked 10 times more and of course that is Monty Python. Also, Doc Martin is perfect perfect perfect, especially early series.
Only fools and horses was the best ever imo; I still watch it to this day. Fawlty towers was also class but for me the duration of the series and enjoyment of each individual epiisode of only fools and horses sets it apart from anything else.
@@drewking250 I agree. I think it resonated with ordinary people so far as Del tried in vain to get round the establishment in avoiding paying tax and trying in vain to make extra money all in a very comedic way. You felt he was part of our families plus it was hilarious watching his antics.
Having recently watched the entire series again, I would agree that 'Only Fools' is certainly up there and there were some real strong characters in it. I think they should have left it after the 1996 Trilogy as the later three episodes seemed to be echoes of earlier episodes and just didn't work. In the ranks of best comedy, I think OFAH shades it over Fawlty Towers simply because the former spanned 9 series and had time to develop and grow, whereas Fawlty Towers only completed 12 episodes. Personally however, I think the best comedy ever committed to celluloid was one that features David Jason in three episodes. Porridge. I have the box set and still watch it when I feel in need of a little humour.
I think Nicholas hit the nail on the head, John Sullivan's writing was/is amazingly good. It's a roller coaster taking you from one hilarious gag, to absolutely top tier gut wrenching drama, to the next hilarious gag in one page. Most comedies aren't as funny and most dramas aren't as effecting, yet OFAH does both. But David and Nicolas also deserve credit for being fine actors who can pull off both the comedy and the drama. I'm honestly having a hard time thinking of other actors that can do it as well as them. Can you think of any?! That's what you get when you combine amazing writing and fine talented actors, gold.
Agreed, the late John Sullivan was a fantastic writer and without that ammunition I honestly don't think David and Nicholas would have still been so relevant today. He was a lovely man too, always gave me a tip after I'd finished cutting his lawn each week!

Don't forget that Arnold Schwarzenegger travelled to the U.K and auditioned for the part of Delboy in only fools and horses around 1980.
