One of the coolest car designs ever made. In person the sheer width and length of the car (along with the "chopped" glass - this thing has like 14" tall windows) gives it a mean look and a PRESENCE no other car on the road has. I won a 78 Mercury Grand Marquis coupe, I want a 72 one day.

PowerNation how long is that car and how much does it weigh, my dad had a 73 or 74 Monterey back in the seventies, man that thing rode good and would cruise at 100 all day long.
All the money they are throwing at this thing they could clean up the undercarriage since they are pulling it all apart .. por15 and some undercoat would go a long way
That stuff is amazing, but a little pricey. Try coal tar epoxy, it's actually an industrial coating for offshore oil rigs to keep them from rusting in salt water. It's also a crapload cheaper
its because they're motorheads not bodyshop guys.. but I also wonder why anyone doing a restoration doesn't spray the entire underside with Phosphoric Acid Rust Converter to neutralize the rust and convert it to an oxide that is easy to wire brush or just paint over.. but this car after they are done is going to be worth less than the cost of the parts they put on it.. unless its for one of their dad's as a specialty project.. give it to dad to drive to the golf course .. throw 4 sets of clubs in the trunk.. heh but those wheels idk if dad is going for that. heh.... maybe kinda looks like boat steering wheels or somethin
+Self-Centered Insomniac I was thinking the same. Pimp on the outside, rust bucket underneath. A waste of money until it's cleaned up. And 1100 HP is going to rip some rusty part loose.
That's the first thing that pissed me off, LOL but i still gave a thumbs up. I agree if all the stuff is out of the way why not at lest spray some Rust-Oleum Black Paint under there darn it.
You had me interested until the pimp wheels... My first car was a 79 Mercury Marquis with dual carbs dual exhaust an air suspension and bored to 500... was dad's trailer miss piggy. Could outrun a Boss 351Mustang or late 70's Corvette... Not quite sure what was done under the hood but it was a dragster tank.
Those rims actually looked good on this car because of the of the fact that the car was size proportionate for the rims Put the same rims on a 2013 Mustang and they'd really look awful
Yes, I think they should have made them look like the stock wheels so there would have been no clue whatsoever to the massive amount of power under the hood.
71 Merc Marq Bro 4 door 429 was my first ride. What a boat. I remember going through freeze plugs for a while. She'd just dump coolant. My dad was a cop in Detroit and he'd drive her to work down the Jeffries freeway at night before it was open. Doing about 100 with all the windows open. He said he thought he was getting taller. Apparently the vacuum created by speed and open windows inverted the headliner and it was hitting him on top of the head.
I love the 72 Grand Marquis. This car is in really good condition. To begin with. You guys are doing a good job. When you are done. You can drop it off here. At my house. 🙂😀
I love the air ride haters.. never driven a car like this with 4-6 adults in it and scraped every time you hit an incline? Didn't think so It's not just for slamming, it's practical, and comfortable. My 96 Fleetwood and my 68 both have air and I wouldn't go back. Grow up and go build a car instead of talking like you know something.
Very nice work on that axle , the construction of the mounting brackets and the quality of the welding ...TOP DRAWER! You definitely don't want to burn your bag!😂😂
Appreciate the work adapting the bags but some proper rate springs at ride height would have been fine. This build is something I've always dreamed of doing; a land yacht that goes, stops, and handles. Love this build.
Front springs are a pain in the ass. Drivers side needs to be different then passengers side. The AC bracket, and pump are close to 200lbs.....that's more weight on the drivers side.
I love watching these guy's channel, and normally enjoy everything they do. However, this time I hate the way they hung that Currie axle. Ford used channels on the trailing arms for a reason. I used to make my own bushings and box those in. Moog cargo coil springs along with a set of the old adjustable Gabriel shocks. Also used Hellwigs anti-sway bars front and rear. I also used to make gussets to strengthen the rear axle housing along with adding a strap along the bottom. These full size fords came with 2:72 rear end ratio unless they were limited slip with 3:25. The 3:25 we're good but I preferred 3:55. I loved the old galaxies sedans and station wagons. I had a 72 Country Squire with the police interceptor package along with the 429 that I had put a lot of time and money into, but was a lot of fun to drive. Ironically, that's one of the cars I miss the most.

Well back in the day you would see a caddie in the hood all nice and shiny and the owner living in a pos house. Now this must be the new thing, A shiny new engine in pos body.

IMO The panhard rod mount on that custom rear axle looks kind of looks spindly looking and use some webbing around it.
Nice sled! Why oh why would you use a 3 link with pan hard bar with all that power and bags. 4 link that and eliminate the side travel with problems pan hard bar causes. It's not like your on a "budget" of any kind. Could you please tell me why you went that route
Love learning about that rear end kit you got eventually im going to be putting in a 1000+ hp big block chevy in my c10 but I can't ever find things that are rated to handle that kinda power
that little ad for the valance at the end gives me a question.. are there any good references as to the thicknesses of different sheet metal and frame parts on vehicles? like how thick a frame is on a 69 F100 or a quarter panel on a 65 mustang... or a frame rail or torque box on a 68 mustang.. I mean you can guess but are there any references that maybe some restoration parts company has put together so if you have to cut in a patch then its the right thickness and not a guess.
First couple road tests should be on Chicago freeways in the winter for a salt bath immersion, get all that nice new undercarriage steel a coating of rust to match the rest of the car. Then park it downtown so somebody recycles the dreadful rolling stock.
Great restoration job. The only thing I give negative feedback is on the rusty frame. If you put a lot of investment on this car, you might as well do the same on restoring the rusty frame.
Can you do something cool with a Pontiac Montana on Powernation? Americans seems to hate those "people carriers" ;) I want to put a 300hp 4.6 Northstar in mine!
That thing had the driving dynamics of an elephant falling down a cliff with a chassis that couldn't handle even the stock power it came with... what a great idea giving it 1100hp. Especially in combination with a thrown together suspension system with zero R&D and testing behind it. This thing is probably a death trap at anything above 60 mph and a perfectly flat and straight piece of road.
@@falconater68 The chassis on one of those traces right back to the '66 Galaxie, the basis of ANY FoMoCo brand NASCAR unit until the mid '80's so yeah, I have to agree with you. This ain't the first rodeo doing this to a vehicle for either of these men, once you know how it works fabing for another project is easy.
Back in the late 80' and early 90's having a bagged suspension on my '68 GT Fastback Torino Pro-Street sure would have made life easier and saved on suspension parts and skid plates (added later) replacement cost and time. Just because it is used on lowriders is no reason to not use something. Look at turbo's, the were "import/ricer" power adders back in the day and are common on any kind of build today. (Though I still prefer my Detroit Diesel -/71 series blowers.)
As I am a former owner of a 72 Merc I will say It's a 5000LB + car so it's a cruiser not a race car, not to mention its about 19ft long, stock height they were to low for taller speed bumps let alone if you had 4 grown men inside of it slamming the car even further to the ground.. Now I am doing my first car from my youth which is a 1973 Lincoln Continental which is a bit longer and heavier then the Merc, it is a very similar build build as this Merc in this video with the exception that it is dual 3 inch exhaust with glass packs and no cross overs for a deliberate raspy sound and a hydraulic cam on a 10.5 compression bottom end making 540ishHP. There is nothing sweeter then a Chevelle owner thinking they are going to smoke you and your slamed Luxo boat Lincoln down a freeway ramp and they can't shake it... But that isn't the point of the car its all about getting out and cruising and the bags make the car look mean as hell when its slammed but totally drivable when your hitting the highway which I drive the hell out of my rides, this car will be rolling one way 250 miles to vegas in a few weeks and it cruises the OC beaches pretty regularly which are and hour away. My point is land yachts are the most under rated car in the hobby and yet they are just as fun if not more fun then any mustang or cuda the bags are part of the fun just as the over stuffed bench seats are.
@@BloodRaven1969 I love a 68 Torino, my neighbor who is an older man has a 427 4 speed car and raced it all over so cal in the 1970s... Such a great looking fastback car. But then again there isn't to many American cars that were what I would consider ugly that are pre safety era rides. I have had probably 75 or so cars of all different makes and models but goofy compacts from the USA in the late 1950s into the 1960s and luxury (fully loaded full size) cars from the late 1940s to the late 1970s from the USA I always come back to them. My Lincoln is a blast and when I was a kid it seated 6 and all my dumb friends had mini trucks with ugly bucket seats out of preludes or somethong so all the girls in the group always ended up in my car... Great times... That being said my next car on my must own list is out of the ordinary for me I think it is going to be a 1964 to 1966 V8 barracuda because I am noticing the price is starting to inch up and I've always wanted one so I figure it's now or never... your torino is also on my bucket list but I Haven't seen a reasonably priced one in a long time. I think I gave only had two mid sized cars in my life, a 68 Olds Cutlass and a ford Granada. When was the last time you have seen one of those cars? I wanted to buy another one but a two door v8 car and I haven't seen one on Craigslist somewhat locally in a long time, I thought it would make a fun street raceish car being in California I have to get a 75 or it would have to do through smog and I am to stupid to move away from this car hating stronghold (as of yet).
I saw those brake shoes on that rear axle, then the rotors fit over that. You and the company man failed to mention that unique setup. Additional braking or just the parking brake?
Now if this was my build and I was putting all the money into the motor, suspension and brakes, why would you not do a frame off restoration. I like how he grind-ed the rust away for the welding of the top airbag mount and then spray painted it black.

@@AtomicReverend Kudos man! My '68 Torino was a 17.5 foot long "Intermediate"... LOL
Have a great day, and have fun hunting those muscle cars!
It's the parking brake
Now if this was my build and I was putting all the money into the motor, suspension and brakes, why would you not do a frame off restoration. I like how he grind-ed the rust away for the welding of the top airbag mount and then spray painted it black.
13:39 Does anyone else look away when someone is welding even on a video?? I do every time...
Where is the rest, you water my appetite with 3 episodes then there is nothing else...
I think your music while you were working on the rear suspension was pretty close to for whom the bell tolls Metallica.
When is going to be dropped? And from what? A cliff? A tall building? Why?
Been over a year and never saw this thing on the road.
Roscoe P. Coaltrain watching you at 3:50.
