A long time ago and at a faraway place I built a 73 ltd. It was the most fun with a vehicle I every had. Light or low hp build on a 2v cleveland, about 300hp at the crank. 9 inch 3.5 rear. Great build team! Just wondering if your skills extend beyond performance because it'd be a real shame leaving this fire breathing '72 Mercury looking the way it does.
this is just painful to watch as I could SEE the rust on that frame when they took the old brake line off but they didn't even bother to clean it up AT ALL. What's the point in making so much HP and putting new lines on when the frame is rusting if you're not gonna clean it up and just allow it to continue rusting
What was painful to see was the NEW brake line retainer not even hold the end of the hose properly. Brand new, out of the box and it doesn't fit together snugly? Typical aftermarket junk.
Apparently they threw all their cash into that antiquated carburetion setup. I'm surprised they didn't throw in some metal folding chairs for seats and call it a day.
@@bigboreracing356 agreed... prep. That car can be Por15'd later... it's hilarious to read all these comments about the crustiness. This won't be a daily driver so the rust is a nonissue. It is designed to be a runner. Shining everything is unnecessary..
WoW. That is one great car. Started out a cream puff, finished as a monster. So cool. Funny video too, with some of the lines and whatnot, while not being too over the top. Part of me wants to see the build-sheet, to know what kind of investment happens in a build like this. Another part of me knows that I couldn't ever afford such greatness. You guys never disappoint. Stay safe, guys & keep these great rebuilds coming.
@@TheChaztor which leads eventually to full blown rust. But, just for the 'look' at least sandblast the bastard and put a crap load of 'soft' bitumen type of cover so it absorbs stone, etc. without 'paint' coming off by chipping. I used to do that with my older cars, lasted a LOT longer then straight paint/primer stuff. Last one was 1974 until I sold it in 2010 and undercarriage was in perfect condition. That added $4000 to the sale price, NO work needed.
Man loving the last few builds then you pull up in this 72 Ma’quis. A neighbor lawyer had one of these four wheeled barn doors, man it was big to a kid. That 1100 purebreds will make this barn door “ float like a buttafly and sting like a bee.” But I digress LOL.
My favorite car of all time and mark my words universe I will own this vehicle as a 1963 Mercury Monterey. Best car I've ever seen in person as a 10 year old 🤩
Nah, stainless tank they cleaned up on the outside. Can still see wear and tear on it including rust stains probably from the straps. Guess the only amazing bit is that it had a stainless tank.
Love watching all the expert work done, like installing the fuel system, rear end, air bags, exhaust and etc. BUT as some others commented why not sand blast the underside and paint it, that could have been done in 1 day if you have the equipment. I noticed that the frame already has some patches weld on it and they look rather shoddy. How does that help plant 1100 horse power to the ground? Oh yea those tires and wheel look awful to me plus that big hole in the hood is looks like shit too.

It would have been nice to see some additional body and interior work done but I guess that was out of scope for the build. However, i love seeing the complete build; The sound of that engine put a smile on my face!
@@bradley.loveland They've been following the same formula for decades with all their shows. I'm not sure why they still insist on the 'odd couple' pairing of hosts and make them dress and act like it's 1998 still. I think the hosts and content are fine but you're right the production is over the top especially contrasted against the more authentic, homegrown, automotive TH-cam channels.
@Meh Meh Technically that's called the bead seat smartass. It's part of the outer wheel, hence the term "seating the bead." I bet you correct people when they use the term motor in place of engine too, lol. And who speaks pidgin rims? Use a comma, ignorance CAN be overcome with knowledge.

For sure they'll outlast that U.S. rebuilt wobbly water pump.
This build deserved so much more. That is such a cool car and they kind of half assed it.
Efi and a sheet metal intake would put this build over the top!
Rockin' a 70 New Yorker, would get nasty love the 70s bad assness!!!
That underside needs fixing. Really spoils an otherwise great idea.
I can see that you've got good standards. A slap-dash shop would have scrapped the fender skirts, but you wisely kept them. Bravo!
this is just painful to watch as I could SEE the rust on that frame when they took the old brake line off but they didn't even bother to clean it up AT ALL. What's the point in making so much HP and putting new lines on when the frame is rusting if you're not gonna clean it up and just allow it to continue rusting
I thought same thing
What was painful to see was the NEW brake line retainer not even hold the end of the hose properly. Brand new, out of the box and it doesn't fit together snugly? Typical aftermarket junk.
Apparently they threw all their cash into that antiquated carburetion setup. I'm surprised they didn't throw in some metal folding chairs for seats and call it a day.
@@Adam1nToronto I don't think it was the line that was wrong, i think it was the bracket that was too thin.
Stay safe, guys & keep these great rebuilds coming.
the frame and underside rusted but lets put 1000 hp in it and watch the frame come apart
Looks like the have their priorities in the right order then. That's surface rust if you didn't know.
Definitely needs a hood scoop, maybe a boss 429 hood scoop.
My favorite car of all time and mark my words universe I will own this vehicle as a 1963 Mercury Monterey. Best car I've ever seen in person as a 10 year old 🤩
Love the “breezeway” on those!
Love the “breezeway” on those!
Love the “breezeway” on those!
Just wanted to see if anyone else noticed that the gas tank they cleaned is definitely brand new already lol
Still not a bad idea. Sometimes they have protective film, oil, or even paint that comes off.
Nah, stainless tank they cleaned up on the outside. Can still see wear and tear on it including rust stains probably from the straps.
Guess the only amazing bit is that it had a stainless tank.
Yall boys did a fine job , brings back memories riding in them big old boats.
boy, a 8L90E on this car would be perfect
I've had several airbagged trucks and they definitely need shocks on the front. That boat will float like crazy.
A set of Slam Specialties bags would make a huge difference in ride and control.
The underside of that merc looks like my old truck. Tennessee rust always looks nastier than it really is. I love this build, great work guys!
I need that engine in my Scion.
It probably weights more than a Scion..and it'd just wheelstand-flip over if you even touched the gas...
I Need That Engine In My GEO METRO!!
Awesome build. A shaker hood scoop would be cool.
I had a 76 Marquis, it was a bomb ride...love this video. Never mind the nay-sayers, your money, your project, you call the shots.
with E85, this baby can pick up another 100 to 150 hp, for sure !!!!!!
If going to e85, might as well take the compression to 14:1
I used to have a '71 Cadillac Fleetwood with a 472 CI engine, That car was a beast in OEM mode.
"when most people think about fuel systems they think about carburettors" - what is this? the 80s?
Better, it's the 70s!
Carburetors give some amazing sounds to the engine better than the injections
@@decomposing_while_alive2002 its all in the tune , u can still get a really good chop with injectors but i must admit im a carb guy myself (especially in triples doubles ) tri power configurations
Very beautiful car 72 mercury
My first big block '77LTD. Second was an eary 70's continental. Both 460/c6 combinations. Both 460 munched the transmissions. There is something about the effortless way an old big block gives you what you want when you are not yet finished asking.
Comfortable confidence at its best.
Just feed the animal and all is good.
Man that air cleaner through the hood 😂. Goofy goobers.
im not a ford guy but thid is wicked well done guys i love it
They lost me right after they pimped it out with the big rims and airbags.
Those are big wheels? For that car?
It would have been nice to see some additional body and interior work done but I guess that was out of scope for the build. However, i love seeing the complete build; The sound of that engine put a smile on my face!
“It’s a Merkury MARKEESE Bro-HAM!”
I'm feeling the vibe. Load up the horsepower and blast off down the highway.
23:20 knockoff back in the saddle aerosmith is painful to hear
Find that track please
knockoff skid row youth gone wild @ 41:51 just as painful
I heard Joan Jett, Ted Nugent, and Foghat as well.
That Grand Marquis lookz soo badass, truly sikk.
1:09:37 setting the air cleaner down for me was like nails on a chalk board. 🤬
The car is awesome and it's also nice to know you went 100% ESAB in your shop.
Big Smo almost broke the front seat when the pedal went to the metal, LOL. He even found Jesus! Amen!
No MeDiA eXpErIeNcE lol
Left a little SMO in his pants!🤣
I like that you guys don't let age or size stop you from going fast
The announcer makes this so cheesy I can't even watch
@@bigboreracing356 sounds like your familiar with this activity. Stop touching your nephews! 😃😄😆😂🤣😭
@@bigboreracing356 you brought it up not me
the whole style of this production is cheesy af
@@bradley.loveland They've been following the same formula for decades with all their shows. I'm not sure why they still insist on the 'odd couple' pairing of hosts and make them dress and act like it's 1998 still. I think the hosts and content are fine but you're right the production is over the top especially contrasted against the more authentic, homegrown, automotive TH-cam channels.
A sixth grade teacher had one of these 72 Grand Marquis for many years. It was the same color too.
16 commercials? I wanted to watch but my cable doesnt even show that many
There's one you don't see much of, love it ! Like it almost as much as a 70 Fury Sport....
I love the idea of tackling a Mercury but those rims do not work with that car at all.
Right you are sir. A set of 17 inch polished Astro supremes would look sweet, or magnum 500s rehooped to 17". Those moon cricket rings look like crap.
@Meh Meh Nope the rims (not the tire/rubber) do not work on that car at all.
@Devin O
Yes... I personally thought it would have been much KOOLER, if they'd have either used the stock steel wheels, hub caps and some "Oldster" lookin' white walls again... Or, maybe even some of those stock-ish looking Detroit Steel wheels with Dog Dish caps and black walls...
Because there's nothing like a Sleeper!
You guys are on the right track at Mach performance serpentine belt system is the best thing that ever happened up there on that aspect
Pro tip: If you run the drill in reverse you will not get shaving in gas tank 😄
Drills in Reverse don't cut very good holes.
Only if you have a reverse drill bit also.🙄🙄
The amount of power is just absolutely insane 😮like just bro 😅😅 come onnnn
After 10 dyno runs: never give new build full throttle ...
Right lol I can see a few easy rides to get seals bearings and bushings worked in and then send it
@@kevinjohnson9372 I know they try to break in the motor, but, still. The dyno guys never get the blame, just the glory. The driver gets the blame.
One of these was my first car. It had the 460 option instead of the 429 The previous owner built the motor. It was fun and fast for a boat but only ran on premium and got maybe 6mpg. It was faster than my friends 72 Mustang Mach 1 with the 351C motor.
