If the purpose of these inland checkpoints is for immigration purposes, then what are they doing with a dog sniffing around cars? Can a dog determine immigration/citizenship status by scent? Nope. That means they are doing something other than the stated purpose of their checkpoint and outside their authority.
The K9 determines if there are live hidden humans in the vehicle. Perhaps the dog differentiates the number of different breath scents and alerts the Agent if there are more passengers than they see.

Google's Map clearly places it in Amado.
