    love Chelsea, she's always so honest and direct. TFD is one of my faves too even though some of content isn't too relevant to me since I don't live in the US

      I feel the same way! Some of the content is not relevant to me (I live in Europe), but the TFD is one of my faves too, they are very informative and relatable!

    I discovered you and your channel last week, have binge watched a LOT of your content including all your IBD videos and I'm SUPER impressed by you! I'm a 52 year old American who isn't afraid to say I've learned A TON of things from a charming and brilliant British woman half my age! I only wish I'd known half as much as you when I was 26 and had the social and communicative skills to share it with others. You are a new and permanent favorite channel and I look forward to ALL your future videos! Well done Hannah!

      Thanks for the "Like" Hannah! I RARELY comment on TH-cam but when I find someone who is genuine, intelligent and compelling, I always try to let them know...happy that you read my comment and know how remarkable I find you! I'm fast becoming a major fan of ALL you do!

  • @lazyperfectionist1
    @lazyperfectionist1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    A couple tips _I_ would add is, first, _never_ buy into an investment you don't understand. I don't care how well it's performing. If it's going up and up and up but you don't _understand_ why and you can't _explain_ why, you can't tell when it's about to take a dive. Like, for example, with me and cryptocurrency. I understand, they're performing really well, and there's a lot of buzz around them, but they make _no_ sense to me, so I'm not buying into them.
    Second, also with investing, risk and reward are positively correlated. This is why the lottery is such a bad investment. If it pays off, it pays off _big._ But the odds of that are extraordinarily _small._ High risk, high reward.
    Every year, some party or other comes to light who _claims_ to have a new investment vehicle that _breaks_ this correlation. Every year, hundreds (sometimes, thousands) of unfortunate people put their hard-earned money _into_ that vehicle that they don't understand and end up _losing_ it.

    7:00 Don't know how it is in the USA but in the UK, the government isn't subsiding your retirement savings. You don't pay tax on it now, true, but you will pay tax on the amount of income each year you draw down from your pension when you are retired, the same way that you pay income taxes on the money you're paid when you're working.

    • @emmafitfoodemma9109
      @emmafitfoodemma9109 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's true, but you will get the tax free personal allowance (approx. £11k per year) when you're retired.
      So if you earn £20k per year now and don't contribute to a pension, you will pay income tax on £9k of your salary each year. If you put £1,000 per year into a pension then you are only paying income tax on £8k of your salary each year.
      When you retire, you get the personal allowance each year so your first £11k of annual retirement income will be tax free (assuming the allowance stays the same in the future). So some or all of that money that you put into your pension will be given to you tax free after retirement.

    • @historymysteries4134

      Daley oh, I know that from my grandparents who refuse to admit that their pension deductions were originally tax-free and moan about paying tax on their pension.

Putting more content like that would be great, because I, like a lot of people, would love to know more about your and other people's experience with freelancing, band building etc. It would be good to learn more and also to know I'm not the only person struggling with these, so I cannot wait for more vidoes like this!

    just a little thing about the 401(k) tip: if you're chronically ill like me, or have any other health problem that might mean you have a lower life expectancy (cancer, diabetes, aids...), i'd suggest getting a savings account instead of a pension plan - there are savings account that you can withdraw from immediately if you need to, which might potentially be very helpful in case of things like for example a medical emergency or having to get your home redone so that it's accessible (getting stairlifts installed or tresholds removed, that sorta thing) or anything like that - because while pension plans are great, some of us do have quite a high chance of not actually getting to the age at which you can make use of it.

    I do want to make one comment on the lottery that might be different here in the UK than in the US. For me, I'm more than happy playing our national lottery occasionally because I'm involved in grassroots sports and am a big fan of a lot of the lottery funded grants I see around. As such for me I see playing the national lottery as essentially a charity donation with the minute chance of winning something. I don't play it regularly or even often but maybe that's a slightly different perspective.

    I attended the Icon Group Inclusion Seminar in Zurich this year, and this amazing woman called Olga Miler from UBS was talking about how (very very generally) woman are more risk adverse, and therefore make the financial gender divide even more extreme (the graphs she whacked out were *shocking*) since they are less likely to invest in higher risk, higher potential return opportunities. Now USB have committed to educating one million women on finance (cool for society, profitable for their business of course). I could pull out the slides for you if you're interested? It really gave me a kick up the bum to get my finance in gear!
