My completely unsolicited advice of the day: when you think about starting a family, allow some mental space for chaos, for what can feel like lost time to a very organized and productive person. Otherwise, it’s easy to see that time like a failure. I know it was for me and ended up causing postpartum depression. When you said that starting and completing your family was on your five-year plan, it actually made me realize that the last three years having two kids, being in the midst of chaos, actually was productive time: I accomplished one of the goals I had for my life. It just didn’t feel like it in the moment. I guess I just mean: allow for the years of limbo that follow having babies and be kind to yourself as you go through them. Thank you for the video, made me think a lot. Xx

Sarah Lamarche, getting 2 kids in 5 years will definitely slow down this plan 😜 i’m 2 years into my ‘plan’ (20 month old amazing boy!) but his first 11 months were my least productive ever and at the same time the most fun I’ve had without leaving the house 😂 compleet chaos!

This is nice to read. My 5 year plan involves having 2 kids (maybe 3, we'll see) and I'm so excited for my main purpose to be taking care of them for a few years. I'm really lucky that my fiance can support us with his income, so I can quit my job and devote all my time and energy to the kids while they're little. What could be more productive than growing a human? We're planning to use the next 18 months with my income (earliest realistic baby arrival time as waiting until after our wedding in 9 months to start trying) to pay off 1/3 of our mortgage. That way, when I stop working for a few years, we'll already own half the house, and can consider moving somewhere bigger in 5 or so years when I have a wage again.

In never mind 5 years, in the end of this year i just want my first graduate job as i currently feel like a failure. But in 5 years my personal goal: is to perhaps start dating (as Muslim this will be a very new thing to figure out so GOD HELP ME) and get life long friends, to overcome mental health issues. My career goal: as mentioned to actually start and get to the point where i have completed a professional qualification. Finally financial goal: get to the point where i have moved out and am financially independent. I will be 27 by then (so i am taking a picture of this comment and save it till then).

I like the emphasis on the fact that all a five year plan does is tell you what your priorities are *right now.* You don't have to meet those goals if your priorities change or life things get in your way. But just identifying your current goal gives you the tools to figure out what you can do now if you want to actually make those things happen.

  • @MrsMster
    @MrsMster 4 ปีที่แล้ว +34

A lot of things can change in 5 years, which is why I'm not going to create one for a very long time if ever, especially since I'm at uni. I'm not 100% sure as to what I want to be doing, but I guess my rough plan is to finish uni, have a job, and have a place of my own or shared with friends.

    • @mouseluva
      @mouseluva 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

My current plan is similar - I want to finish uni with my health intact and then get a stable job in a healthy environment within my field. My bigger dreams of having my own apartment and a pet cat will depend much more on what the economy is doing in five years than my actions as an individual. Flexible dreams and rough plans are good!

The way a 5 year plan comes about for me is literally:
    1) do something tedious at work that requires 0 brain power
    2) play "what would I rather be doing right now?"
    3) think about how I can make my life get there
    4) come home and do a brain storm and get all motivated about the whole thing
    5) forget about 2 weeks Later after trying install like 10 habits at once bc I'm impatient as fuuuucccckkkk

16:47 I personally did the opposite. I basically never donate to the causes that go "viral". When everybody's talking about it and everybody around me has donated (especially if it's for a single person and not "wildfires in Australia"), I don't and I rather support my two favourite charities longterm and regularly. I have recurring monthly payments to both of them and I don't have to think about it every month which I actually prefer. I'm doing good without much mental effort (I hope this doesn't make me sound like a bad person...).
I have chosen (on purpose) two very different organizations in terms of size (Médecins Sans Frontières and a local cat shelter from which I previously adopted a cat) because I like that with MSF my money is just a drop in an ocean and with the shelter, it's like a cup in a kid's pool.

I bought a house last year on a 30 year mortgage, but I'm paying an extra $200 a month on it so it'll be paid off in 15 years. So in 5 years I hope to have my house 1/3 paid off. I also want to retire in 15 years (as I'll be 65 then), so I hope to have saved up 1/3 towards my retirement goals by then. My weight loss gains are a modest 1 pound per month, so I hope in 5 years to have lost 60 pounds, which is also 1/3 of my weight loss goals (yes, I'm heavy). I don't really have many other goals outside of financial and weight loss. These are the issues stressing me out right now, and these are the issues I'd like to resolve. I'd love to own my own business in five years, but we'll see. There is so much that goes into that. I don't really have any relationship goals, as I'm happy alone. This is really all I'm focused on right now. Everything else I enjoy in life, I can do right now to a limited extent, and I hope to have more time to pursue my hobbies over the years. I guess I only really have a 15 year plan that is easily divisible down to 5 year goals. Lol

This came at such a great time, my mentor and I are currently working on my 5 year plan, and your video helps a lot too. For me, a lot of it has to do with learning more about my disability/ managing it better so that it's not running my life, because I'm also studying part time, I guess I want to use that to my advantage and use the full time job that I already have to lead to other opportunities where I can use my degree and job(s) to finally become a barrister. I also want to take my art to the next level and grow more creatively plus make more time to just chill out and paint. Now I just need to figure out the nitty gritty bits :D

On the charity question I start by identifying my priorities, usually on a yearly basis. So in my case locally I’m very concerned about homelessness, food insecurity and supporting sexual violence support organizations. Internationally, last year my priorities were refugee support and public health development. I then research charities in each of those areas and set up monthly donations with ones that I feel are good fits and reliable organizations. I also keep a fund of “as needed” donation money, so that when there are crises where I want to respond to an urgent need, or charity drives I want to support, I know I have funds available to do that. That said I think the benefit of ongoing and more planned donations is that often moments of crisis are when donations come most readily, while long term support of programs is often the key to sustainable change and gets overlooked when we just jump from crisis to crisis in our giving.

I did a very bare bones 5 year plan when I turned 30 at the beginning of the year, but I really want to expand it like this for more personal things. A few things of mine are concrete, because I'm in an MBA program and will finish half way through my 5 years, and most of my goals are based around that...and also money. Like I want a new job this year and also to possibly move, but by the end of the time period, I want to hit certain savings and debt payoff goals and also hopefully be in a job that allows me to plan some fun travels.
But I think I'm off to a good start, because I did a very detailed annual budget (in a template that I found through One Big Happy Life here on YT) breaking down all of my anticipated income and bills for the entire year, and then I was able to multiply that out over the 5 years and space out what I'm currently making up through what I could potentially be making/saving/spending on my life.
I do want to try breaking things down by category, though, because I think that will be a good exercise.

Personal goals (not already related to Financial/Career/Relationships) would relate to Health & Wellness. To begin with, perhaps say something relating to your illness-you’d like to ween off of medication-or you’d like to start a meal plan to maintain your diet and weight, or you’d like to reach a certain goal at the gym by reaching a weight and repetitions figure. It could also relate to spiritualism, if you’d like to attend a spiritual center a certain number of times per month.

Something to keep in mind for charities: a recurring monthly donation is a HUGE DEAL for them. It allows them to know how much they will be receiving in the future, so they can make plans. Obviously any donation is a welcome donation, but if you can commit to an automatic monthly donation at a smaller amount, rather than a one-time lump sum, it can allow the organization to be more effective most of the time.

I really like your way of approaching it. I kind of do the same thing, only I don‘t have it written down. Like, my goals include „make more money“ and „move into a nicer place that I can imagine myself living in for more than two years“, so step one to basically all of my goals start with me going back to university next month. While working a full time job. Oh god I hope I can do this.

Tips for donating to charities if you don't have much money but you still want to help:
    1) Tab for cause is a google chrome extension where every time you open a new tab = 1 heart and then you can donate hearts to different charities. I think 1 heart = 1p
    2) Ecosia. A search engine that every time you search something, pledges to plant one tree. 1 search = 1 planted tree
    3) Donate/buy clothes/items to charity shops
    4) Im very excited to do this one this year, but i'm finally going to donate my hair! Been growing it since April 2019 so hopefully later this year I can cut it all off and donate it to The Little Princess Trust.

I find this type of content super inspiring! I'm currently considering whether to ask for a raise or for less hours for my current salary, so I'm weighing up these options and the consequences a lot. Might have to try making a 5-year plan as well!
As for the charity point: my partner and I currently support 3 charities monthly with a small amount (€5-€10) - Amnesty, the food bank, and WWF (so one to improve lives further away from us, one to improve lives "locally", and one nature-focussed).

My five year plan is to finish my bachelors with my health intact and get into a job in my field that has a healthy work environment. People keep asking me which area of my field I want to go into, but following my interests within it is much less important than being able to enjoy what I do each day! Also I'd like to be in a position financially where I can think about moving out of my parents place and have a pet cat, but a lot of that is going to depend on luck and wider economic trends outside of my immediate control (cough brexit and climate change cough).

A note on charity giving: I set up small monthly donations to a few charities I really like. That way I know I'm consistently giving back at least a little, even when it's not at the front of my brain. Also, this is a HUGE help for non profits: they get a passive income, are better able to predict and plan their finances, don't have to depend as much on campaigns or random events. Giving to something that's in the news often inundates charities, so obviously it's a great thing for them that they get the money, but it's not very sustainable to them as far as their "business" model!
I chose mine by brainstorming what issues feel the most important to me, researching a bit on Charity Navigator to find ones w/ the best ratings, prioritizing local charities, then selecting a few that encompassed my interests. I also still give bigger chunks here and there to other places. My current monthly donations go to Earthjustice (climate change & enviro justice being big issues for me); Camfed (women's education --> women's rights & climate change); The Trevor Project (LGBTQ+ rights & suicide prevention); & my local animal shelter (PUPPIES) .
As someone who loves nonprofits, works in the industry, and has some disposable income, I feel like monthly giving is the best way anyone can support nonprofits & I hope you decide to do so!
ALSO I give $5 a month to each of these, even if you don't have a huge income this is such a great way to consistently give back

Honestly,I think the five year old plan is for people who already have been planning what to do since a very young age, like teenage years,so since I'm in my early 20s and I just started thinking about my future ,figuring out a 5years plans is just mentally exhausting,so I will try to make a 6months plan, then a 1year ,2years,3 and 4 and then 5 years, over a longer period of time, while seeing the results of the first 6months to 1year if that makes any sense.

This method is actually really helpful to me - focusing on the vision, what's needed, and what the first steps are. I would add that I'm including a "How has the vision//steps//actions" changed check in like... every three months and yearly. It's kinda like the 5 year plan is never meant to BE achieved, and keeps changing to "okay five years from *now*" without giving yourself TOO much room to escape, but enough to take in your evolving goals.

My dad donates to the Deaf Children's Society (he's an audiologist) every month, think it's like £15. Mum donates to her church which is partnered with a church in Africa, some of the members from here go over there to help build houses, schools & wells etc. When I was younger we also sponsored a few children, I think as a child that's a great way to understand charity & privilege, especially as we would get photos and letters from the children that we sponsored :)

I'm going to be a bit of a downer, but here's one thing about mental illness (coupled with some physical problems) that doesn't get discussed a lot. The only achievable goal I can really have five years from now is to be alive. The plan involves at least weekly appointments with all sorts of different doctors and other healthcare professionals.
And like, I'll probably be alive in five years. I might even be better. But when all energy, all planning, etc, goes to staying alive? There's not a lot left to plan for success, so even after one is "cured" (which is like... You're never really cured) it's still an uphill battle just to catch up to peers. So it feels a little bit like fighting real hard so that my health doesn't kill me so that my financial situation after the fight can have the killing blow instead.
This sounds a lot more doom and gloomy than it is, but it's not just about me, but about everyone with a severe illness (whether physical or mental) that prohibits this kind of planning. We're living in a world that's pushing further and further right, which makes our plans even more fragile, since we can't rely on social safety nets and healthcare that could be dismantled at any moment.
Obviously this isn't on you to fix, dear TH-camr, or dear comment reader, you obviously have health problems of your own, your own plans and goals you need to work towards. Just maybe something to think about.

In terms of donating to charities, read the book 'Doing Good Better' by William Macaskill - It tells you what the best charities to donate to in terms of how they use money and how many people it will positively effect .. it also talks about how you can use your time to help charities in the most effective way too! It's a brilliant book, give it a read :)

I’m in the same bucket as a lot of people here I think. I graduate from Uni in may and I have no idea what I want to do. A five year plan for me looks really vague at the moment because I’ve been in school my whole life and given that I don’t want to follow the “path” that my major lays out for post college... I think what I might do is take a “gap” year. But like Hannah said it’s hard to know if I’ll be making enough money working odd jobs to travel like I want or get a dog or do any of it.
Meanwhile people say money can’t buy happiness.

I’d love to make a 5 year plan but I’m in the middle of uni at the moment and it feels every few months my plan for what I’ll do after changes. But I’d like to have found a career path I enjoy and be more content with life. Also a job I don’t hate that is somehow not 9-5 because I want to have a life during daylight hours. Then other goals like have written another book (drafting stages), maybe even published who knows.

You would probably be interested in the podcast Cortex. They have this idea of creating themes instead of specific goals. it's mostly focused around like New Years resolutions but i've found it helpful in a more general sense. Last year was my theme was "Year of Health" and the whole idea was to just make better choices in regards to things that impact my health. So I started doing things like exercising regularly, eating better, meditating, and trying to improve my sleeping habits. It was an overwhelming success. This year is i want to continue those things and have the "Year of Family" where i do things like move in with my long-term girlfriend, maybe get engaged, and take more trips to see family.

For the charity thing, have you heard of Kiva? You can choose specific causes around the world (women, education, environmental etc.) but instead of donating you lend money to an individual project, and when / if it gets paid back you can withdraw the money or reinvest in something else. Been doing it a couple of years now and think it's great! 😊

Love this!! As for charities, I pick a local charity that provides a services that I feel contributes to my community thriving and allowing people to succeed in life. I started with donating $25 per month, so it was manageable with a smoll smoll income, and I justified it not by making more, but by resolving with myself to cut one pointless expense in that amount each month. Ie, eating in one time when I would have chosen to eat out.

It's really hard for me to set 5 year goals, since my illnesses can make my reaching that goal to differ so much; like seriously all from 1 month to 5 years. I wish, and work towards, being able to one day work my kind of 100% whilst still manageing to maintain an acceptable life standard. I'm finally back to where I was 2y ago and I can only pray I won't hit that big of a set back again.
