- In this video Adrian and I repair a four stroke Yamaha that is leaking oil. The main problem turns out be the corrosion in the powerhead where the oil gallery passes by the raw water cooling but we also sleeve the crankshaft and replace the lower oil seal.

All internal combustion engines operate on the same basic principles. u can apply it to almost anything your working on. The worst part are the computers that run everything.

Here on the left coast our automobile fuel doesn't have much petroleum product in it..... Wont even clean varnish from a paint brush...Wont run in an outboard either.
Thanks Tom. Last time I was at Berkley was to watch a Greatful Dead concert. Petrol here is still pretty standard when it comes to boats. Only car bowsers well fuel with ethanol in it.
Good work and a pretty involved repair. Amazing just how complex a modern 4 stroke OB engine is with lots of electrical circuits on top of quite fragile castings. I replaced a lower oil seal on a 60hp M but thankfully it didn’t have the corrosion or the lipped-seal. On those there’s a very pricey crush washer underneath the flywheel. I couldn’t believe how expensive that was and the timing belt was astronomical, too. Looking forward to seeing more from the yard and the workshop. Thanks!
I really enjoy watching your outboard repairs. My first boat had an old blue band mercury 70hp outboard on it. It had a lot of problems and I thought I was up to the task of sorting them out. After lots of time and money spent I realized I was throwing good money after bad. After watching you work on outboards I now realize how little I knew. Looking forward to your next video.

I really love how all the people of the Hawkesbury work together and look out for each other. I hope they do well with the tour business till the oysters come good again. Always fun to see Adrian and yourself playing with big toys.

I think you find the main and con rod bearings are prevented from spinning by their crush fit in the rod/cap or main cap/block, the tangs are there for alignment. That's as I was taught many years ago.

Yes, they sit slightly proud of the casing which expands them and locks them in. Just one of those modern cost savings designs that us old timers can't fathom. ;)

I have run into that before with small micro bubbles coming out of the weld . Pressure and heat building inside as you are welding .You are putting pressure on it to check the weld but you can put a vacuum on it as you are welding it and it will seal up . (a very small vacuum.. the liter the better)
Interesting idea. We were also talking about peening it with a punch to help close up any small holes.
@@DangarMarineI think that would work if you were brazing it after . Heating the aluminum by brazing and seal it off . Brazing has always been a little easier for me than welding. Just remember micro bubbles are from trapped heat or from the weld of brazing .

Add a quarter inch flat bar 1 inch to 10 feet for the length of the boat and a resting depth of .25 with the full stern with motors. Don't forget to gusset it. About 2% down max on the turn down on the plate. Old Texas trick !

Great video Stu, well done with the resurrection, out boards are really made from not much for good reason ... an old friend used to use a belt sander too clean up cyclender heads on 25 year old units that should have been scrap

Stu you could've used a gas lense cup with a longer stick out if needed. Who ever owns that engine is lucky, up here most shops would've refused to repair it
I did push it to the limit but wasn't getting enough gas shielding in the end. It's tricky because the small cup makes the gas come out too fast and blow the puddle away unless you turn down the pressure in which case you get a black brown mess. It was definitely a tricky spot to weld!

All the cast aluminum I've messed with welded like chit. It has all garbage in it. But with the large gas lense it gets the argon where it's needed.

Stu, i always take a heap of happy snaps and video prior to a pull down of motors. Has come in very handy at times when the memory fails with what goes where. My memory is bad so these little aids work for me.
I have used JB Weld for problems like what you tig welded. It has never failed, great product.
For sure. I took plenty of photos of this outboard as well as taking the video. I have used JB Weld to fix a hole like this before but it did eventually fail in my case. I'm hoping this lasts quite a while.
@@DangarMarine could you explain why the hole was even there? I’m not sure why you would the ports connected in such a fashion. Is it literally letting oil into a water jacket or vice versa? Sorry if it seems a dumb question

Fantastic, work on that outboard, was really interesting.......
Like all industries different engines in different environments have different problems.
IV used "speed sleeves" before on Perkins engines, but again was different, just warmed the sleeve up....tapped it home with no trimming and was good to go.
But these engines you had about 3/4 goes at just moving the seal in or out a couple of mm to get afresh face to run on.
Really like how you all work out faults the work out the fix.

Also fork lift are good for testing the tensile strength for wiring harnesses as well... don't ask.

I agree with you and Adrian, what a mess of a design for bearings, no little cleft edge to hold it in place or anything?
Sometimes I really *question* Yamaha’s engineering.
Wish I was there, take care mate.
I think it is one of those modern less is cheaper things. Because the bearings slightly protrude higher than the housing they are held in place by their outward crush. It just feels weird not having anything to hold them in position while you bolt the casing up.
@@DangarMarine I believe they expect the average man to never see them these days as well, or to simply even…replace the power head?? 😮💨 You nor I would do such a thing unless absolutely necessary.

I had an umbrella cockatoo, a female who seemed to enjoy pushing scraps of bread I would give her from time to time in her aviary out through the wire for the wild sparrows to come and feed on. they would flock on the other side of the wire gobbling up the bread why she seemingly joyfully kept pushing it through the wire mesh.
I think she was lonely and wanted to make friends!
@@DangarMarine Could be although she lived with another umbrella in the same pen, her brother actually. They were both hand raised babies from the same parents. It was funny. You could see she got very excited by the flock of sparrows.
Thanks for putting out these videos, it’s good to live vicariously through them. I didn’t really understand what happened to the oil return pipe that you had to weld it up and wouldn’t that affect the cooling?
The weld was just built up over the hole, it still has oil flowing through it beside the cooling water.

I often wonder what DH thought of mixing aluminium and salt water. Any alternative would be I guess too expensive but some sort of coating perhaps. Either that or flushing every time you use it. I'll stick to my Rolls Royce CV12 (if I had one). Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
Me too. I flush my Yamaha after every trip. The thought of leaving salt water sitting in the engine in between trips makes me shudder.
With the flushing port on the engine, it takes 30 seconds, or a minute if I'm not in a rush. I'm reassured by the 10 foot 'pee' and the sound of freshwater flooding out the bottom 🙂
But I'm the only one I see doing this in my marina, and I can tell that some of the other folks think it's overkill...

Hello there. I so enjoy your videos. I have a 1985 mercury blackmax 150hp that someone gave me. I tried it out and it idled fine at first but after going just a little way on the lake it would rev really high in neutral. Can you help with ideas to look for? Thank you so much.

Regarding grinding the corroded aluminium before welding - is it not worth covering the rest of the engine to avoid those filings entering cavities and orifices? Or does a good blow job afterwards and an oil change equal less work?
It certainly wouldn't hurt to mask it up, I agree. I think I'll tend to flush with a solution more than compressed air to make sure nothing gets driven deeper in.

I'm not sure why they stopped putting the little tangs on bearings, but it's not just Yamaha. I was overhauling a 20 year old 4.7 liter Chrysler V8 last winter and the original bearings had the tangs, but the new updated part numbers did not. I was told by a automotive machinest that (somehow) they are less likely to spin without the tangs on there. The only reason I can think of is that during the manufacturing process when they punch the bearings to create the tangs it potentially causes the bearing surface to become slightly distorted which would in theory wear them out faster. I guess if you run it without oil the bearings are going to stick and spin either way.

I think possibly a bad casting. This outboard has been serviced pretty regularly and all the anodes looked good.

Wouldn't it be faster to braze/hard soldering the pinhole or is the temperature so high in that spot that it wouldn't last?
It's tough with aluminium. I think maybe with steel but TIG is probably best in this situation.
You can use aluminum arc rods to weld corroded aluminum
I should try using some one day. I have never heard great things but it would be good to get some first hand experience with them.
@@DangarMarine I tried Tig but 2 dam dirty in cylinder head arc rods hard to control so you have to do a lot of die grinding and planing very porous but managed to build up,very time consuming though

Great informative video as always mate, wondering if i could get your thoughts on something? I recently purchased a stacer seahawk with a 2005 two stroke yamaha outboard, aint had it in the water yet but have run it on the muffs at home, it runs very well and i have just replaced impeller and thermostat, but i have noticed after i have ran it i am getting an oily black substance running down the skeg, i have had the prop off to check seals but it all looks as it should, i have noticed that the oil tank has been filled above the full line, do you think this could be the problem? Thanks in advance for any advice 👍
There are plenty of things it could be that aren't too serious. If it's coming out the propeller hub and running down it will be a combination of exhaust soot (making it black) and some unburnt fuel oil. It could be the prop seal too, a quick pressure test will tell you if there is a problem there.

My yamaha 2 stroke 20sg also soots up. I tend to add a touch more 2 stroke oil than called for and I troll more than WOT

great job on your video's. we have 90hp evinrude. the power trim works when the boat is going slow. It will not work 1/2 or full throttle. If we slow down it works, as soon as we start giving it throttle it goes back down. any thoughts?
Could be the bypass valve is partially open allowing the thrust of the prop to push it back down. It could also be failing seals.
