    In this video I explain how the layers work when attempting a single pull. Understanding layers on the plate will allow you to plan your prints better. You should know that a mixture of transparent and opaque colors will give you better results.

      Im still making mistakes because Ive got a mixture of acrylics and they have different drying times and opacity! I have some golden open acrylics which take longer to dry than others but they are lovely. Its when I tried fluid acrylics that its even more confusing. However I do love gelli printing and have got my mojo back after my painting stopped during covid.
      I never thought Id be so motivated and excited as my 80 th birthday approaches. Thank you Susan for your great videos.

    I don't understand why so many people are complaining about the music. Her voice is much louder than the music, because she lowered the volume everytime she spoke. Her voice is clear and I understand every single word. The music between the explanations is beautiful and fits the art.

    Thank you so much for what you shared. "The first layer is what's going to show on top. It builds from there. Your last layer you might see very little of it, depending on the transparency of your paint." This helped me to understand perfectly! Never heard anyone describe the process like that and I couldn't get the order in my head. Because of that, I always expected something very different. Also this, "Don't forget. Dry a lot in between each layer, like at least 5 minutes." This helped a lot because it seems scary to allow any of the paint to dry so much.

    Thank you, Susan, for this really excellent video tutorial.
    I can honestly say it is now one of my favourites and definitely one of the best I have watched .
    I loved it because of your gentle pace and wonderfully clear, simple and concise explanations .
    I have watched many, many gel plate tutorials and of course there are some fab videos available ... but I particularly enjoyed yours purely because of its simplicity.
    I am going to rewatch it and take notes.
    I also agree with some of the other comments about the music being unnecessary and distracting.
    You don't need any music in the background in my opinion as we are very happy just to listen to you 🤗🤗
    Wishing you every success and thanks again !!

    • @SusanCliftonArtist

      Usually my music is very low and not distracting. On two recent videos I had new equipment and when I did the playback I didn't hear it until it was live and watched on my Television. It is unfortunate but things sometimes happen and we need to improve going forward. I should make this a pinned comment. Thanks for the comment. I hope you still enjoyed the video.

      @sheilacym ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Understood, Susan…..these ‘techy’ things happen and it’s all a new learning curve for everyone who makes these videos, I’m sure.
      It definitely did not spoil it for me as I absolutely loved the video and have shared it with a friend in Canada who is also just starting with the gel plate.
      Your clear and concise delivery was just perfect and I am going to rewatch it and take notes.
      The reason I enjoyed it so much is because of its simplicity and your clear manner of describing and explaining everything.
      Opacity / translucency of the different coloured paints is something that I hadn’t considered previously when using the gel plate.
      I knew about the first layer being the dominant colour … but didn’t think about the other points that you made….so very helpful !!
      Learning about techniques and layering can be complex, but the way you explain it has been very helpful to me as a ‘newbie’ and I have learned a lot.
      I will enjoy watching your other tutorials and thank you, once again 🤗🤗

      Keep in mind you could also do the reverse and add one layer at a time without waiting for it to dry. I prefer this method though.

    The time stamps 9:10 and 21:10 were my favorites! The color mix of that beautiful green in 9:10 were beautiful!! and 21:10 was my favorite!!!
    As a watercolor mixed media artist who creates and sells alot of greeting cards but have yet to accomplish a large ,say a 14” x 20” painting. I love to include decoupage to my paintings or pencil sanding over stencils. I have just begun learning how to gel print. I have learned that you need to wait for most layers to dry before continuing. I’m curious if what you are doing on your videos are just for teaching or if you use those prints for specific crafts as well. I want to learn how to create a piece of art on canvas with gelli prints!! I’ve purchased an assortment of Amsterdam acrylic paints but see that you use golden. I have several golden and QOR products . Looks like I need to purchase some golden acrylics now, 🤪 . I have been an artist/crafter for 50 years now! Yes my mom started teaching me crafts at the age of 7. My dad actually build her ,her own craft supply room in our back yard! It was actually on our back porch so it was always covered. It was a 10’ x 10’ room! Just for supplies!!! Today she’s 84 and is making me a quilt for my electric twin bed! She’s amazing! I have Multiple Sclerosis and it has affected my left hand so I am now focusing on drawing and painting and selling all of my other craft supplies except of course anything that can produce a texture! lol . I’m looking forward to learning alot from you! God bless you and may your channel prosper ❣️

    Awesome!!! I use "Deli" paper for clean off paper. "Greeseproof" paper here in Australia. Thin and sturdy. Supermarket cheap. I just subscribed. I love your take on layers. I was transfixed. Thankyou so much for sharing yourself with the world.

    This tutorial is very helpful in understanding the concept of layering and the importance of the opacity of the paint. I appreciated the comments regarding stencils, in particular the comments you make about the ones you've created. I have been trying to figure that out, as the commercially available stencils offer infinite possibilities...at a price.

    • @SusanCliftonArtist
      @SusanCliftonArtist  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You can hand cut stencils on Mylar or Tyvek paper. I like to use my Cricut to make stencils.

    @susanCliftonArtist, Thank you for this tutorial. It helped me understand the layers. You said you used your cricut to make some of the stencils, what is the media you are cutting to make them? Thanks!

    • @SusanCliftonArtist
      @SusanCliftonArtist  หลายเดือนก่อน

      You are so welcome! I use either craft plastic or mylar. 7 mil. On the cricut joy you use the plastic setting. For the mylar you should have an explore or maker and use the mylar setting with 3 rounds of cuts.

    Suggestion to everyone, including Susan: Treat yourself to a Speedball brayer. That purchase more than any other really improved my printmaking. (No, I’m not saying your prints need improvement!) The weight of the brayer spreads paint with very little effort. And it’s well- balanced so the distribution is even, so you need less paint.

      I have a speedball beater as well. But I like the black one I have too.

      First off, thanks. As far as an alternate to gel plate, I'm sorry I do not know. I've seen some videos on that subject but didn't bother to watch. You can also make your own, supposedly.

    That was an excellent video Susan. Really appreciate your teaching. Just wondering about the transparency of each paint... do you know this through practice or is there another way of knowing how transparent a paint is?

    • @SusanCliftonArtist
      @SusanCliftonArtist  ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question. I use a lot of Golden Paint and on the bottle they have black lines with a swash of the paint showing you how transparent you can expect that color to be. You could also do this yourself with paint you have already. Don't be fooled by the name of the color. I have one that says opaque in the name and it's very transparent. I hope that helps.
