I would like you to know how valuable a resource your videos are. I’ve spent my whole life being an artist. One day two years ago very suddenly with no warning signs I had a retinal detachment in my right eye. After two surgeries and a brutal recovery process, it was unsuccessful and I am blind in that eye. People tell me oh it’s ok you can still see in left eye. Yes this is true, however it has fundamentally changed what I can do and how I do it art wise. It has taken me ages to rediscover myself and my new art personality. Watching your videos has been a blessing to me. I think in this age of super fast social media … perhaps gratitude and appreciation gets lost or shoved to the periphery. You have been pivotal in changing my perspective on my capabilities. I am eternally grateful. Thank you!❤
Thank you, Nessa. That is so sweet. I can't image what you have gone through. I was experiencing wet macular degeneration and they told me if I had waited to see them I would have lost the sight in my right eye. I was very fortunate. I still live with macular and hopefully it will not progress fast. How did you adjust? Are you doing the same type of artwork? I'm sure your work will thrive and you will find a new voice within yourself.
@@SusanCliftonArtist I used to do extremely precise textile arts, where being off a sixteenth of an inch wouldn’t be good. That’s is no longer something I can achieve. I want to switch to graphic arts, mono printing, also I have been making my own art supplies with materials foraged in nature… making paints and paper. I have a long way to go. Mostly it helps to not feel hopeless and discouraged and just keep trying. I see you understand the macular part of eye sight, this was the area destroyed by my detachment.
Nessa. I read about your experience. I don’t know you, but you are a terrific example of recovery. I understand you can’t do the original artwork and you started a new one. Just know that all your knowledge you’ve gained in the past will always be with you. Like a memory of a loved one. It took me many, many years of just any kind of art, but my real love has been collage. Until recently I’ve not had a clue about all the parts that make it wonderful. I’m 71, doing art since I was 3, but just really being able to put it all together. I wish I was younger when I put it all together, but all my past starts and stops are with me, (until my memory goes 😊) lol. All the best to you! And… Susan is the best I’ve found, and I’m so happy I found her. Take good care ☮️

Hello Nessa! I am so very glad you shared your story & how you overcame a devastating situation that could have been an even worse loss. You are an amazing & courageous woman in my eyes!! And I am absolutely sure you’re an inspiration to all you meet!! I know that because you’re certainly an inspiration to me! Since I have never done gel art & didn’t even know what it was, I was looking for a beginner video. And with tons to chose from, I chose this one & am so very glad I did!! I am sure God led me to this video, because I have disabilities to overcome as well. The video was very helpful and just what I was looking for. And Girlfriend, it took a lot of courage to share what happened to your eye!! Not only to share your story Nessa, it took a lot of COURAGE, STRENGTH, RESOLVE, & FAITH to overcome such a loss!! Many people would have just given up and fallen into a state of despair. Thank you so much Nessa for sharing your story!! The video was great and learned a lot, but you inspired and touched my heart. I think that’s the best part of it all! God bless you Nessa, those around you are very blessed to have you in their lives.❤️❤️🙏🏻🙏🏻
This video was great for a newbie , only did my first prints yesterday and already hooked. I have been watching many videos, but I have to say your calm , non- theatrical voice is what made me watch to the end . It's such a shame when knowledgeable people are just so flamboyant you can't stand listening to them. Anyway 🙏🌈 Bless, and keep the videos coming.
The demo of the registration is great, thank you. And thank you for the no music, I have hearing problems and I have a hard time transitioning from one type of sound to another, this was peaceful in that regard, thank you!
I really appreciate your unhurried method of demonstrating your techniques. I’ve been gel printing for about 4 years; so much of what you showed I’ve heard or seen before. However, your demo and explanation made it so much clearer. I understand why certain things are done. Thanks, so much for showing the names of the pickup paints you used. I’m very grateful for your sharing this video. You’ve made me want to try more techniques. 👏🏾💜
I love your manner of teaching. You are clear and concise. You don’t jump all around the topic making it more difficult to follow. Although I have been experimenting with my plate it is helpful to continue to learn from someone with a lot of knowledge on the subject.
Wow, thank you! I appreciate that. It helps if you experiment and don't get upset when things don't work. It's a process. Eventually you just flow and work and not overthink it. Good luck.
Susan, I never leave comments but the beautiful way you take your time to explain the process makes me want to try this for the first time…wish me luck!
Susan, thank you so very much for this tutorial!I have been Gelli printing for a few months, but your video still gave great tips! The chapters were a helpful idea!! At this time I have quite a few prints, but would love a similar, step by step instruction on collaging with them, on paper, canvas and board! Also, I could use instruction on types of collage mediums, I.e. thick body vs. liquid, and how long and when to let the mediums dry. Please, please, please! I really struggled yesterday. Love your work! 🙏🏻
Thanks for tip. I will try on my next collage video to include some tips on adhering the papers during collage. I use mostly Liquitex gel gloss medium. It dries pretty fast. I put it on the surface then add the paper then put more on top. I do not put the medium on the paper. I especially like rice paper for collage. The results are just beautiful. Best of luck.
Thank you so much I have finally taken the plunge and bought my first gel plate, and on your recommendation I have ordered rice paper and deli paper, I already have paints and stencils so I am excited for them all to turn up in a few days, thank you so much for your time and the way to teach is inspirational x
Wonderful! I think you will love it. Be patient with yourself. It will take you some time to get used to the timing on the pulls and using the brayer properly. But once you get the hang of it you will be obsessed. Enjoy!
Hi Susan, messaging you from country Victoria in Australia, where we are going into winter. Can't thank you enough for your very excellent beginner's video on gelli plate printing. I especially loved the registration segment with the "ghost" print (like you I favour the non-ghost) exercise. The single pull with multiple layers was also very educational. I belong to a wonderful group of textile artists and was introduced to gelli plate printing through them - they are soooo addictive. I now have my own plate and, with the calm, wonderful approach that you have taken, I am looking forward to creating some lovely images. Currently we are working on exhibition pieces with the theme being "Industrial" and for this I will be printing hills on fabric, pastures and wind farms on fabric and then stitching felted clouds and maybe animals onto my fabric. Your video has helped me enormously so thanks again. Warm regards Alain Louise Howard
Thank you for your very informative video with extra techniques. You have a very calm, gentle voice, and way of presenting. Your prints are fabulous. I quite often prefer the ghost prints also. I'm totally addicted to Gel printing. Just love it. It's so relaxing. I'm sorry to hear about your breathing difficulties Susan, and i hope youve had some relief. I too, suffer at times with my breathing, when i have a "flare up"with copd, so i can sympathise with you. Blessings... Jayna ♥️🇦🇺🦘
Susan, thank you so much for your video content. I watched at least thirty other videos, and still had no idea how or where to start until I found yours.
You did a great job. I get so turned around on layering! I got so much from this and love that you listed the chapters. I am saving this in my art ideas Playlist.
Thank you Susan I am so glad I found your video amongst tons of videos and so blessed I chose yours! I have several disabilities; fibromyalgia, ME/CFS, a spine so messed up one surgeon, asked me if I ever played professional football because the injuries to my spine are what he sees in pro football players. Note 🤣🤣I’ve never played pro football. I used to do lots of crafts years ago and I’m starting up again. My background is musical theater, I am a classically trained lyric coloratura, but with my disabilities, I can no longer perform and hardly able to sing at all. That has been very devastating to me because that’s all I ever wanted to do with my life. I will be 68 years old this February coming. I’m not able to work b/c of this and I also needed to find an outlet a creative outlet so I started building up a craft studio. So I’ve been building up my studio with all the supplies I need to start again. I had never done gel painting and I didn’t even know what it was to tell the truth. I decided to find a video to explain it all to me, and I am so glad I found yours! I can’t wait to get a gel plate and start having fun with it. Your way of teaching, your calm voice, your explanation on each step and the way you are so real instead of some others I’ve seen. I learned a lot just from this one video. Thank you so very much Susan! I have subscribed to your channel and look forward to watching more of your tutorials! God bless you, Susan, for all you have shared and thank you! 🙏🏻🙏🏻

This is the best beginner video. I couldn’t understand why I was so bad. But watching this video gave me some success. And I’m going to keep watching this until I get it right. Another commenter said it’s not as easy as the videos make it look. She’s right. Sue has given me hope!
Haven't gel printed in awhile and happened on your videos. So helpful in getting me brushed up! I really like your teaching style alot and look forward to watching all of your videos. Thank you!!!
So much useful info! Feeling the paper for temp and moisture is absolutely brilliant. Your unhurried approach is so refreshing and literally more my speed. In a world full of motorboats, I prefer to be a canoe. 🙃
Thank you so much for the tutorial. I'm a beginner on Gelli printing and after watching tons of videos, I wasted so much paint and paper 😊, atlast found yours, it's truly helpful, now I understand how much paint I've to put, how much time I've to wait and ofcourse understood the layering part. Thank you so much Susan for this life changing tutorial ❤

Hi Susan, for a year all my ordered gel print stuff needed to wait till today! I watched your video and gave it a try and it works very well! I love my fist made prints and I will watch more videos from you, I also love your voice and the way of patience you work.... Thanks for sharing your experience, it helps a lot as a beginner!
Ah Susan what an excellent video, my gel plate sat in a drawer for about four years, because I couldn’t work out how to create beautiful prints. I have learnt so much from this video, and your so patient and explain fully, a great tutor thank you! 😊
I am so enjoying this detailed demonstration. I have been wanting to try gel printing for well over a year but haven't worked up the nerve to try it yet. Your video is giving me confidence that I can finally take the plate out of its clamshell and give it all a try! Thank you!
Hi Susan! Long-time watercolourist, newly introduced to gel plate printing. Your excellent tutorial has helped me figure out what I've been doing wrong so far, thank you SO much! I will be watching you from now on. Love your work!
You helped me!!! Thank you! Your rolling technique (picking up each time) and what you said about feeling the temp of the paper - I haven't heard anyone else mention those things. My first plate arrived today and I get to play with it all day tomorrow. YAY!
I came across Gel Printing while researching another process and this really intrigues me. When I get through with some other projects I will have to look into this more.
Thank you, Susan for this very detailed tutorial. Many years ago I geli plated on a homemade plate. Did very straight forward pulls and basically used them for wrapping paper. Your tutorials bring it to a whole nother level and I am eager to begin again with both a homemade plate and an 8 by 10 Gel Press. I love the transparency of watercolors and I will try to replicate that effect in my prints, whole composition prints. I'm subscribed and will be watching your other tutorials for inspiration. Thanks for a tutorial well done.
@@SusanCliftonArtist No, I just followed the formula presented on TH-cam. There are many of them. I also read the comments below them to determine if the formula was successful. I made sure the pan I used had a flat bottom and I cured it at room temperature...no refrigerator. The ingredients together were rather pricey, but I compared the large one I made with the commercial one, and I came out ahead. The one I made years ago lasted a long time. In fact, lasted until I finally had to get rid of it to use the extremely large pan. The one I made now is 11 x 14". I've made a large one because I want to make whole composition prints. Baby steps, I keep reminding myself.
Thank you Susan…Enjoyed your beginners tutorial, finding some useful tips. Your pulls came out beautifully. Stencils used created some very interesting effects. Love your art, especially use of affirmation fabric within painting. Awesome! Off to watch more…😊
This was an excellent video and I learned a lot. I just started playing with my plate yesterday and had so much fun - even with the boo-boos! The feel of the paper underneath your hands was very informative for how dry the paint is. I am definitely subscribing and watching more of your content. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and expertise! ❤
Thanks for a lovely basics tutorial. I've been playing with gel plates for a little while, but still find myself quite mixed up over processes. This was very clear and helpful.
@30:14 I love that map-like look. I laughed when she made a boo-boo and said her table wasn't big enough. My open dining room gets great natural light all day, so I have temporarily converted it into my studio. (You can do stuff like that when you live by yourself.) So my quite large old French farmhouse table for eight is my work table. I do have to negotiate with my cat, PeterPaws, because he eats on the table. (My senior mini schnauzer would devour his food otherwise). But, I digress because my point is that - for me - the bigger the table, the bigger the mess.
I’ve just ordered my first geli plate so I’ve been researching online. FYI, Gelelf and Gelli plate both say to store plate between two pieces of white copy paper. So you are doing what the companies suggest! 👏👍🏼
I am impressed with your clear and concise explanations on Gelli printing. I have truly enjoyed your video and I have learned a few ways to make my prints come out better. I have subscribed to your channel. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with all of us!
Thank you so much. I’m just orienting myself before getting started with gel printing and appreciate your thorough explanations. I look forward to viewing more of your videos-very inspiring!
I have just found this art form, and have been watching lots of vids. I shd say out front that i am no artist but always wished i was. I was, in my working life, an upholsterer and that satisfied my creative urges... for then. For now, crafting has attracted me tho i have created nothing i am very happy with. Dont know why i shd tell you all that except to let you know that i actually think i MAY be able to do this, thanks to your excellent video. I was getting very confused until i watched this. So thanks. Oh, and what exactly are the challenges for using craft paint (what i have)? I suppose i will find out, whether you can answer or not.
I find that the craft paints are low in pigment and they don't brayer on smoothly. Some colors that are more opaque seems to work ok. CraftSmart has a pretty light blue color that I sometimes use. It has a lot of white mixed in to create a light color. So I find it works.
Thank you Susan. I’m playing with my Gel plate tonight for the first time and yes I was using too much paint. I’ve gotten some lovely things but some not at all. There is much to learn and it’s great fun. Your video was a tremendous help and I look forward to making some of my own stamps and stencils one day soon. ❤
Fascinating to watch! I just bought a plate yesterday; haven't even taken it out of the box yet. You've made me excited to try the different techniques. Thanks so much for sharing.
Thank you so much for sharing this. I am new to gel printing and, so far, not produced anything I'm satisfied with. You've shown me some of the mistakes I'm making and given me even more reasons to persevere 😊
Great beginner tutorial Susan, step by step and so easy to follow. I'm not a beginner, but I still found this so interesting and helpful to see. Have you ever used the Carnival Wet Strength Tissue? I love it. It's made in the UK, I got some off Amazon. I am always inspired by each of your videos; and thank you so much for all of the help!
This video was so helpful and inspiring. Videos that I have watched before mostly left me confused.... This video gives me hope for gel printing in the future! Thanks!!!

Wonderful! That for letting me know that it was helpful. And congratulations on making prints you love. First try! That's great.
Thank you, very clear and helpful! I’m amazed at how complicated this has seemed until now, even having watched several videos. This is very clear 😊
Glad it helped! That is a huge compliment
Ah Susan what an excellent video, my gel plate sat in a drawer for about four years, because I couldn’t work out how to create beautiful prints. I have learnt so much from this video, and your so patient and explain fully, a great tutor thank you! 😊
Get it out of that drawer. LOL. Have fun and don't stress if it doesn't work the first time. You'll get the hang of it.
I am so enjoying this detailed demonstration. I have been wanting to try gel printing for well over a year but haven't worked up the nerve to try it yet. Your video is giving me confidence that I can finally take the plate out of its clamshell and give it all a try! Thank you!
You are so welcome!
WONDERFUL, WONDERFUL TUTORIAL. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE CLEAR, INFORMATIVE AND FUN TUTORIAL.
You are so welcome!
Hi Susan! Long-time watercolourist, newly introduced to gel plate printing. Your excellent tutorial has helped me figure out what I've been doing wrong so far, thank you SO much! I will be watching you from now on. Love your work!
Thanks so much. It's been an evolution over the last few years. Using the gel prints a lot now in my work. Still Experimenting!
I am learning so much from your videos even though I have been Gelli printing for years.
This was so enjoyable to watch. Thank you.
You helped me!!! Thank you! Your rolling technique (picking up each time) and what you said about feeling the temp of the paper - I haven't heard anyone else mention those things. My first plate arrived today and I get to play with it all day tomorrow. YAY!
You are so welcome! I hope you are having lots of fun.
Thank you! Can’t wait to get started. Love your pace, clear explanation and that you mentioned another artist. I will come back MANY times!
You are so welcome! Thanks for watching.
That was interesting and fun to watch. Thanks for making this video.
Susan you are wonderfull . Your voice make me calm . I don't know if i have all these materials here in Brazil , bur i'll try . Thanksssss ❤
I hope you can find the supplies. Good luck.
I came across Gel Printing while researching another process and this really intrigues me. When I get through with some other projects I will have to look into this more.
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for subscribing. I need to try to make a homemade plate. Was it difficult?
I love this video...and i love artwhisperer88 too! Thanks Susan! I just started gel printing 2 weeks ago for first time and having FUN!....❤B
Wonderful! Make it your own. And continue having fun!
Thank you Susan…Enjoyed your beginners tutorial, finding some useful tips. Your pulls came out beautifully. Stencils used created some very interesting effects. Love your art, especially use of affirmation fabric within painting. Awesome! Off to watch more…😊
Welcome. I hope you like some of the other videos.
Thank you for watching.
Thanks Susan for a terrific demonstration of materials and techniques.
You are so welcome!
Islam, watching for a second time. best demo I have seen thus far. Having a paper arts class in a few weeks and will demo this for sure. thank you.
Fantastic!
Thank you ! Here I sit and learn 💚
You're so welcome!
I'm a newbie and this was EXCELLENT
I hope it helps you learn gel printing.
Thanks for a lovely basics tutorial. I've been playing with gel plates for a little while, but still find myself quite mixed up over processes. This was very clear and helpful.
I hope it was helpful
Wonderful tutorial with lots of helpful hints and techniques. Thanks so much!
You are so welcome!
LOL. I get that. I'm working in a very tiny studio. Feels claustrophobic at times. But the rent is cheap. Thanks for watching.
Awesome tutorial, thank you! Just got my first gel plate and this really helped me to get started. 😊
You are so welcome!
I’ve just ordered my first geli plate so I’ve been researching online. FYI, Gelelf and Gelli plate both say to store plate between two pieces of white copy paper. So you are doing what the companies suggest! 👏👍🏼
Yep. I see people all the time in videos storing them between the plastic they come with. That's not a good idea.
I am impressed with your clear and concise explanations on Gelli printing. I have truly enjoyed your video and I have learned a few ways to make my prints come out better. I have subscribed to your channel. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with all of us!
Thanks. I'll try to keep the videos coming.
Hello! I’m a new subscriber and have learned so much watching just two gel print videos! Thank you!

Thank you so much. I’m just orienting myself before getting started with gel printing and appreciate your thorough explanations. I look forward to viewing more of your videos-very inspiring!

You're very welcome!
Awesome videos thank you so much for sharing your talent ❤❤❤
Thank you so much Susan! I am just starting my journey with Gel printing and so enjoyed this lesson. Looking forward to exploring your teachings :)

Gelli printing is on my list to try this summer once my semester is over. I love the organic-ness of it.
And it's always different. Such a surprise sometimes. I think you will love it.
Fantastic. You'll learn quick.

Thank you so much for sharing this. I am new to gel printing and, so far, not produced anything I'm satisfied with. You've shown me some of the mistakes I'm making and given me even more reasons to persevere 😊
You are so welcome! Stick with it.
Im so excited! I just bought my 1st plate. I want to make backgrounds for my greeting cards that I make

Oh my. Your work will be influenced by this new tool. You will love it. Enjoy!
I haven't tried it yet. My budget is tight. One of these days I will.
This is great, thank you so much for sharing your knowledge.
My pleasure!
This video was so helpful and inspiring. Videos that I have watched before mostly left me confused.... This video gives me hope for gel printing in the future! Thanks!!!

Thoroughly enjoyed your presentation....thank you.
I'm physically joining a workshop tomorrow to further this experience....
Wonderful!
I was trying to digest all your info. I'm new to this. Feeling brave and excited. Thanks 💚
Go slow. Try simple prints to start and then when you get the hang of it move on to more complex prints. That's what I did.
Thank you very much for the interesting video! I'm a critic, going to write about an artist's works, who uses gel print. Since I didn't know enough of it, this was very useful!
I'm glad it was helpful.
