Luke here: I'm writing this from the PC in the video. It took about 1 full year to get our house repaired from the fire. Endless conversations with insurance agents and contractors, getting permits from the city, living out of a hotel for 2 months, and then a rental home for 10 more. It was a nightmare. I'm incredibly lucky that the firefighters responded so quickly, and that we had insurance to cover everything. My advice to everyone: always have insurance, document your belongings (simple photos of your rooms and closets may be good enough, receipts are best), and have smoke detectors. Nobody was home when this fire started, but I luckily live in a large suburban area. If my neighbors didn't hear the alarms going off and then calling 911, we could've lost our whole house. I've been told that a fire can double in size every 30 seconds. It took firefighters 4 minutes to get to my house after they received the call. Although the fire was contained to my room, everything in the house was covered in soot and had to be replaced. EVERYTHING. Every wall had to be repainted, all carpet was trashed, the entire HVAC system replaced (you'll never get the soot out), wood floors, furniture, beds, clothes, everything. It doesn't matter if it was in another room with the door shut or across the house. Small amounts of soot gets everywhere. Since basically everything in houses is made of plastic, that soot is toxic and also usually carcinogenic. I reached out to Steve because I maybe thought it my be a good video idea, and that this is a unique opportunity where they may be able to learn something interesting and possibly help the community (which turned out to be true). This video was and is amazing. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. I CANNOT express how downright respectful, thoughtful, caring, generous, and inspirational the GN team is. They did all of this and asked for NOTHING in return. I didn't expect them to send anything back let alone MY PARTS. They even offered to pay for shipping. After such a stressful time of my life, having GN (people I've looked up to and admired for a while now) provide such a wholesome experience made my whole situation just that much better. I could go on and on, but I hope it's abundantly apparent how thankful I am to Gamers Nexus and all of their efforts. The PC they sent back to me has had zero issues for what's now been a few months. Glad you are safe and that insurance covered (most) of your losses. I think very few realize what damage even a small fire does to a house until youve been through it. I am with you, you truly see peoples worth when something like this happens and GN and crew stood up to the plate and hit a home run.
If I've learned anything from this, it's that I'm definitely replacing my 22-year-old garage sale window AC unit this summer. Holy crap. I'm glad you got back into your home and that the damage was managed. Best of luck to you!!
As someone who lost everything to a house fire, thank you for doing this for him. The (not so) little things like this actually make a big difference. I cried when someone gave us a small coffee maker.

With no possessions left to them. They were also crying and holding each other. I gave them a blanket, and the socks off my feet since it was cold outside.

Obviously I hope you don't have to do this again, but for anyone else watching and happens to see this comment figured I'd throw it out there.
@@ConfidentialMeerkat They're not the same as melamine sponges (which are also great but more for general cleaning than soot specifically). GN still has a way to make their modern videos feel a bit like what they were doing a few years back in the house. Much respect to what you guys still continue to do
The old, stained case has a real look of an abandoned Aperture Science computer, you can't get weathering like that easily. Would be fun to see a build based on that idea.
I think it was definitely a good idea to replace the PSU even if it could have been saved, just considering they had been through a traumatic fire and the last thing needed is a PSU shorting out due to some unforeseen issue a couple of months down the line. Big props to you all at GN, you showed why it is that so many of us trust you and your opinions as youve shown time and time again to be trustworthy, humble and caring human beings. Thank you.
Steve in all seriousness, you guys over there are the greatest. I grabbed food and drink and watched this like I would a Hollywood movie. What your team did for this young man was nothing short of incredible and I would also like to thank NZXT for sending over the parts. I found myself rooting for the motherboard hoping that it was going to boot. This is what a PC Community looks like at a time of a crisis!!!
Thank you for doing this. I didn't realize the trauma experienced by my own fire until I saw this. It took me over six years just to recover again. This may seem like a small thing. But it makes a huge difference. So much loss
Both Mike and Patrick were great in front of the camera! Steve, in my opinion, you can easily rely on more people from GN to host videos. Also, thank you for this great video, it was amazing to see how much hardware survived the fire. And I'm happy to read in your pinned comment that his living situation has greatly improved.
When the floods hit Lismore in NSW, Australia, my house was completely gutted, and my PC was underwater for two days and sitting in horrible, humid conditions for another three days before I could get back inside and check it. The motherboard battery had corroded and leaked which rusted that area of the motherboard. The only components that worked after I cleaned them were all the drives (m.2, 2.5 ssds, and 3.5 hdd storage), and the 3080. The motherboard, CPU, and memory were all toast. We were homeless for a couple of months afterwards, and it took me almost a year to find somewhere to live and replace my machine. Doing these things for people who have been through that type of trauma is amazing. Great job GN.
@@GamersNexus The fire destroyed them, you simply completed the "disassembly" process on them after the fact. Seriously though I would have wanted to replace everything clean at that point anyway, especially if the pads were coming apart at all. They could have already been dying before that anyway.
I don't know if your decision to repair and reuse the components was influenced by sustainability in anyway, but it makes me happy that you chose to do it regardless. Great work everyone!
It's mind blowing how durable these parts are to survive a literal fire. Also props for all you guys and your efforts cleaning up all the parts to that level of pristine conditions!
@@MrFallenone Exactly, and many of the components are designed to operate at temperatures much higher than the interior of the box would have experienced in the fire. It's really not that surprising to me at all.
Caps can be rated to like 120c for thousands of hours. Mobo caps can be like 80c rated? Funny anecdote about the OVH Strasbourg datacenter fire is that the electricity and internet kept runnig in the building and some servers temperatures got to like 95C for 20 minutes before they dropped. You can find pics on Twitter.
Thanks for doing content like this. GN as a brand really shows off the best side of the PC enthusiast community. I think these kinds of community pieces, the real crunchy "how do things work" pieces like the factory tours and the benchmarking methodology, and your hard hitting investigative journalism pieces really set the bar.
This was amazing! I’m shocked that you saved the whole core and put it back together! Great content and it makes me feel all extra warm and fuzzy to support y’all.
As someone who had their house flood twice in 24 hours with the pc receiving a good dunking both times, I'm so glad to see the GN team help someone out. No doubt it means more than words! Luckily, 100% of my parts worked even though mine was powered on at the time and it was delivered doa from the insurance company (the GPU and hard drive needed resocketing to boot up).
Same exact thing happened to me 2 months ago lost everything I had, my computer that I spent do much time building and even got 1st degree burns but am still here trying to come back to where I was.
I love when Steve and the Gamer Nexus team does this stuff. I's awesome when he give back to people like this and some of my favorite videos he makes to watch from time to time. I hope they keep this up for as long as they make content. :)
I have such an intense fear of housefires. Watching this is giving me an anxiety attack, but I can't look away. You folks are heroes for doing this for a fan!
just gotta be careful with everything, and be prepared because some things are unforseeable. Have an escape plan, and prep your family. Don't live every day in fear, but be prepared for anything.
Tldr Do not change anything when you are away/asleep. (Wireless maybe fine, depending on how much you trust temperature protection.) And try unplugging appliances/switch off breakers/switched outlet when not in use. I wonder if it was the heating element in the window AC that caught on fire... Usually they use heat pumps to generate heat, but I have heard some use extra heating elements that are prone to fire.
@@AaronShenghao My fears come from childhood experiences with apartment building fires in an era when smoking in bed was a common cause of fires. That's definitely not a threat in my house, but I do remain vigilant with other sources of ignition.
@@AaronShenghao could also be a bad cord, you'd be shocked at the cords I've seen people still use... I did a house call to repair a dude's pc, and the power strip he had it plugged into had BURN MARKS on it! One of the outlets on it was partially melted and everything! I told him to throw it away and promise to check all others in the house, how do you just ignore that with kids in your home?!
Great gesture, really appreciate you guys being able to do this sorta thing! My situation was definitely not as bad but I had my pc (also a H440 case) fall down the stairs while moving. Miraculously everything but the powersupply fan and the case is fine. But just goes to show how a little thing can just have a big impact on your life and for you guys to reconcile the happenings of life a little bit is awesome.
I love that you were able to salvage all those components, and I love the new case, but would have loved to see the old case bead blasted and a custom paint job with flames on it!
This is so amazing to see, I can't believe that everything except the AIO and case was salvageable. The case as well with a lot more work than it's worth unless you can strip and respray it. Thank you for the second-hand oxytocin GN. More like this please
Thank you guys at GN for what you do with your journalism and for all the positivity you provide to your local and not so local community. Keep being awesome
So proud of you guys, what a heartfelt positive reply to a subscriber. These are never fun to begin with, luckily there were no personal injuries and Luke and family are going to be okay from what I gather. I'd say the patina on that motherboard is worth a story!
A tip on cleaning electronics using an ultrasonic with Branson EC: After you remove the boards from the cleaner, instead of using distilled water, cover the entire board in 99.9 IPA. This displaces the water and then rapidly evaporates. Finish blow drying with compressed air or a DataVac. Done, and the board is ready to return to service! Great video and effort, guys!
Steve - Your team are incredible for what you do! Great Journalism Pieces and Awesome bits for the community! You and your team truly are a benefit for the community and industry!!
Love to see stuff like this, I wss absolutely heartbroken when I lost everything in the Australian bush fires. Shame I couldn't afford one of your aus bushfire shirts at the time. Love everything you guys do
I was really rooting to see that Gaming Carbon come back to life. It is a nice board to look at, and seeing it come back to life with just a few scars was for some reason heart warming.
Kudos to you guys for supporting your viewers through hard times! Thank you. So glad it came out well. I have a workhorse NZXT case from 2008 that is a workhorse missing two legs! Thank to NZXT, great cases!
Ultrasonic cleaners are so cool. The first time I saw one was in one of those EVGA visits, where Kingpin used it to clean a motherboard. I've wanted one ever since. Another great video and another great deed. I love this channel.
Yeah, I've wanted one for a while now, too, just added one to my cart/shopping list. Useful for a bunch of different cleaning applications, but I'd probably most often use for old parts like heatsinks and keyboard stuff.
They're awesome for things like this! Great at getting small debris off of components. I think we paid $600 for the one you see in the video (at the time we bought it), and IIRC, most of that cost was for the size. If you can do with a smaller size, like maybe you don't need to fit a motherboard, they get significantly cheaper. Lots of bike shops use small ones for chains, cogs, etc.
@@GamersNexus I think they can be a little bit difficult to understand? I think hearing sth from Louis Rossmann about taht the frequency matters for the components you put inside, especially for electronics? Do not know but cool to see the pc working again.
Awesome work on this one, I was genuinely amazed that the motherboard was salvageable! I'd suggest passing the old case over to Jay to be blasted back to bare metal and repainted (perhaps with a phoenix motif) and then used for a new themed build. It doesn't matter how dirty something is if you strip it right back.
So I figured the CPU would be OK because you know if it gets to hot it will just Thermal Throttle...LOL! As for the Motherboard I find it ironic that it was the MSI Gaming"Carbon" Board! No wonder it still works! LOL! Great job guys!!
I'm curious what was harder to clean, hurricane computer or fire computer. Also, I love that you did the intro/outro and then the team take over and don't just relegate them to the extras channel. They are a very personable and relatable crew and a pleasure to watch (even the little bit we do get to see of Andrew(like in the 4090 Taiwan video)).
The hurricane one was pretty gross just because the water caused some growth, but the fire PC was far more difficult to clean as the damage was just everywhere. The water damage was mostly isolated to lower parts of the system!
From my experience (this is literally the industry I work in) flood damaged electronics are easier to clean than soot contaminated but the failure rate is much higher, mostly due to the power being on when the flood hits. Direct thermal damage will write off anything, not much point in cleaning something that's melted but more often than not it's just corrosive soot that needs to be dealt with.
Mike, Patrick, Andrew, Steve, and the whole GN team are great folks. The video is amazing and Luke's comments written using the resurrected PC are the cherry on top.
I absolutely love that so much of the original components were salvageable. Looking into that build, and seeing the fire scarred motherboard, what a memory. A constant reminder that even from a bad situation, good things can still come back to lift you up. I hope all ends up working out for the best for Luke, a house fire is no joke and could have been much more serious. Glad no one was hurt in the event. Great job with the salvage and rebuild GN, always love seeing content like this for sure. Cheers.
Wow! Amazing work by Mike and Pat. Props also to NZXT for replacing the PS and case. Betting the owner was happy that the 3090 survived.. seeing how expensive it would be to replace that one piece. I think it's a Dell model too. Watched this vid from beginning to end.. Love the content GN!
I'm really impressed that most of the important parts actually survived the fire! I was even more surprised with the GPU and I'm glad your team took the time in repainting it as well!
You guys could've totally just built him a new machine … but it was so much more cool seeing you bring this one back to life! Mad props to the GN crew!
personally i think having the resurrected pc rebuilt in the old chassis with the fire stains would be so cool. I testament and reminder of the fire and a monument to everything and everyone who survived. Plus no other custom pc would ever look like yours
Cool to see that you guys actually managed to salvage most of the parts!!! Especially considering that they were pretty awesome parts to begin with. Big kudos!
You guys are awesome! And major props for NZXT for sending a new case. Smart move, good PR. What a great story with a happy ending. More of that please 😊
I honestly did not think the motherboard was going to make it, nor the ram or GPU. I'm rather surprised that they did. I think the case of the PC actually contributed to it as it would have shielded a lot of the component from the fire. Excellent job on the restoration.
Love when the crew can get together on a project that clearly means something to them. Having them all in the same place (at least in shot) is a rare occasion, and I'm a sucker every time. Keep it up GN, we love y'all
This is awesome you guys. The fact that the PSU, AIO, and case was all that required replacement is astounding... That board did look pretty cool after it was cleaned up. I actually have electronics insurance build into my renters insurance for instances like this. So if a fire happens to me, I'm not worried about it too much...
I really didn't think the motherboard and gpu would work. I thought the card itself would work, but that the fans were melted and unbalanced. Great vid!
Very cool! Super glad Luke is settled into new digs, and a ton of fun watching you recover the system. Look forward to more of these (sans the dangerous fires, of course). Thanks GN!
Dude that was completely amazing. Just took a little bit of time and you managed to put it back together and working again. That computer is Battle Scared now "Achievement Unlocked". Hope everything going well and Luke is able to get back into his house soon. God Bless my friend have a good one.
Love to see a system like this be brought back to life. It was absolutely satisfying to see almost all the parts get cleaned up and working again! Great job GN.

Glad to see you were willing to help Luke out! Also glad to see that most of the parts were salvageable! This was a great video and I learned a few things along the way.
Well done GN team! Love that you all are able to flex resources in this way. Personally, I would have kept the case as a reminder to just how destructive a fire can be, but to each their own. I feel like that case should be sent to one of the art TH-camrs (a la Nerd Forge) for a custom paint job.
Great video. Glad to see you didn't just give him a new PC as that would have been the boring way out! I'm amazed you were able to save as much as you did.
That's one hell of a case. It did its job far beyond what anyone could reasonably expect it to do. Part of that would be how well the components themselves were made, but for them to have suffered so little or no damage... I'd give most of the credit to the case.
That's pretty impressive that all the major components still worked. I would still be curious about the power supply, not that I would trust it, but it would be fun to plug it in and see what happens.
Didn't think I would ever see the same case I have featured in one of your videos again considering how old it is. I bought mine back in 2014 and it's still going strong.
It would have been cool to use the same case and maybe paint on some flames, but this is so awesome. The burn marks give all the components, the case included, some real character.

GN still has a way to make their modern videos feel a bit like what they were doing a few years back in the house.
Much respect to what you guys still continue to do
That means a lot. We try to keep that old vibe as often as we can!
@@GamersNexus Never change. I hope to watch you guys for PC related news for many years to come.
The passion is still there. The production is getting bigger and better but they are staying true to themselves instead of becoming a content farm.
@@BeersAndBeatsPDX yeah these guys are awesome!
@@GamersNexus There's no substitute for authenticity and truly caring about what you do - it totally shines through
This story really touched my heart. I love how Steve and the GN Team is always helping out others in need. ❤
The old, stained case has a real look of an abandoned Aperture Science computer, you can't get weathering like that easily. Would be fun to see a build based on that idea.
Yeah, the outside panels look cool. Maybe get some transparent protective coating on them and I could totally see it in a "distressed" build.
@@JustLiesNOR yup. I thought it looked sweet like that.
The cake is a lie....
Looked a bit like JayzTwoCents's Destiny mod.
That fire damage gives to that case lots of personality, shame it wasn´t used for the final build to tell an story of how resilient that PC was.
And I'm happy to read in your pinned comment that his living situation has greatly improved.
seconded! They did fantastic, would love to see more of the GN crew in videos
Mike is such a great and entertaining personality. Loved his commentary during disassembly and re- assembly lol
It's good practice to save the thermal pads.
... I destroyed the thermal pads.
@@GamersNexus It was the fires fault okey!
@@GamersNexus The fire destroyed them, you simply completed the "disassembly" process on them after the fact. Seriously though I would have wanted to replace everything clean at that point anyway, especially if the pads were coming apart at all. They could have already been dying before that anyway.
He certainly lives up to his title, cooler than other technicians.
Its kinda amazing how many components survived. Great job GN crew!
They are in a box designed to protect them after all.
PC was like: oh we're on fire. ANYWAY
@@Felipe_9999 keeps playing COD MW
The case actually looked kinda cool after cleaning and tells a story.
i was thinking the same thing, id be keeping that case forever
I dont think you would want to be reminded every time you turn on your pc that your house burned down
@@lentho4382 yeah who knows what was lost you could be reminded of every time..
@@lentho4382 guarantee the pc he has now will do the exact same thing xD, every little thing is a reminder when that type of crap happens.
Phoenix would be a good name for the new build.
This was amazing! I’m shocked that you saved the whole core and put it back together! Great content and it makes me feel all extra warm and fuzzy to support y’all.
Outstanding guys, as a firefighter I applaud you reaching out to help.
Good luck mate. At the end of the day, you are the most irreplaceable thing, and you survived. Stay strong.
I have a father who was always hyper vigilant about fire. Which means I am a also a father who is hyper vigilant about fire. Lol.
Tldr Do not change anything when you are away/asleep. (Wireless maybe fine, depending on how much you trust temperature protection.)
And try unplugging appliances/switch off breakers/switched outlet when not in use.

Great to see another video by yall helping more people with their damaged setups. Love my setup now, and am forever grateful for GNs help.

I have a workhorse NZXT case from 2008 that is a workhorse missing two legs!
Thank to NZXT, great cases!
Make this an ongoing monthly series. Seriously great work Steve and team.
That nzxt case at the end is the case I decided to get for my build in october 22. I LOVE IT. Best case I ever seen/used.
Lots of bike shops use small ones for chains, cogs, etc.
it's absolutely wild seeing pc components lowered into liquid on purpose lol, but the results were insane
@@GamersNexus I think they can be a little bit difficult to understand? I think hearing sth from Louis Rossmann about taht the frequency matters for the components you put inside, especially for electronics? Do not know but cool to see the pc working again.

I'm in awe seeing so many parts still working after all this. Amazing job GN team!
You guys... Just wow. That was so much fun to watch, and what a great cause. Nice of Nzxt too to send the case
Hey, i would love to buy that case of you, stains and everything! that thing is battle hardened and i see a lot of life left in it!
Glad I am not the only one to see that and giggle.
Steve is living up to his title of Tech Jesus. Now he's even healing the sick PCs! 🙏💙
And his disciples Michael and Patrick?
Cheers.
Great job guys! Turned out awesome and GN is truly looking out for ALL gamers. Love to see this kind of giving!
Wow! Amazing work by Mike and Pat. Props also to NZXT for replacing the PS and case.
Betting the owner was happy that the 3090 survived.. seeing how expensive it would be to replace that one piece. I think it's a Dell model too.
Watched this vid from beginning to end.. Love the content GN!
who would ever thought that some of the computer tech can be so resilient ! fires, hurricanes etc its amazing !
Big W for you guys!! Glad Luke was able to get his PC mostly salvageable. GN came in clutch.
Cool to see that you guys actually managed to salvage most of the parts!!! Especially considering that they were pretty awesome parts to begin with. Big kudos!
Very satisfying to see you help out someone who had some bad luck. You have a lot of class.

What a great story with a happy ending. More of that please 😊
Hard to say he got luck after losing so much. But he did get lucky with his PC.
Great save GN you guys' rock!!
I honestly did not think the motherboard was going to make it, nor the ram or GPU. I'm rather surprised that they did. I think the case of the PC actually contributed to it as it would have shielded a lot of the component from the fire. Excellent job on the restoration.
Now this is the stuff I like to see! Actually fixed a few PCs from a fire myself, and you would surprised with the outcome. Great stuff GN!
Love when the crew can get together on a project that clearly means something to them. Having them all in the same place (at least in shot) is a rare occasion, and I'm a sucker every time. Keep it up GN, we love y'all
Great video, loved it! and thanks for helping someone in need, it's the uplifting video I was hoping for. Massive respect.
This is awesome you guys. The fact that the PSU, AIO, and case was all that required replacement is astounding... That board did look pretty cool after it was cleaned up. I actually have electronics insurance build into my renters insurance for instances like this. So if a fire happens to me, I'm not worried about it too much...
Awesome video. Love that you did not just go the easy way, bought all new parts and gifted them. Live the cleanup and testing
I love the fact you were able to use the "battle damaged" parts... kinda tells a cool story, the PC that survived a fire.
Very cool to see all the staff doing their own part! Great on screen performances
Thanks GN!
This is amazing, thanks for doing this! It’s super cool that the parts weren’t too damaged, really shows how robust PC components are!
Dude that was completely amazing. Just took a little bit of time and you managed to put it back together and working again. That computer is Battle Scared now "Achievement Unlocked". Hope everything going well and Luke is able to get back into his house soon. God Bless my friend have a good one.
Solid work by everyone on the team who helped get Luke's computer cleaned up and back to working order!
Love to see a system like this be brought back to life. It was absolutely satisfying to see almost all the parts get cleaned up and working again! Great job GN.
I had my apartment destroyed November 17, 2013 by an F4 tornado. It wasnt a house, but I also lost about everything. What GN did here is encouraging, hopeful, and just awesome.
Glad to see you were willing to help Luke out! Also glad to see that most of the parts were salvageable! This was a great video and I learned a few things along the way.
We must protect this man at all costs so him and his team can do more awesome things like this.
Very cool! Genuinely surprised the mobo worked. The rest wasn't as surprising, but motherboards are always more resilient than I expect.
The H440!! Thats my case!! I did some panel redesigns to improve the airflow! Pretty neat to see other folks still use this case
It's awesome that you guys managed to salvage some of the parts for the new build.
That's one hell of a case. It did its job far beyond what anyone could reasonably expect it to do. Part of that would be how well the components themselves were made, but for them to have suffered so little or no damage... I'd give most of the credit to the case.
Amazing video and glad t has a sponsor. The line "You can bring an old card back to peak performance" was a bit cringe.
