If you are looking for quality, American made tourniquet options, then I suggest:
    North American Rescue C-A-T or
    TACMED Solutions SOF Toruniquets

You should post a link to these so people know specifically what amazon ones you are talking about. Or post the recommended made in US ones if they are available.. I do question though if American stock is being bought up they may be hard to come by.

Thanks for pointing this out. I was a Rescue Task Force instructor, teaching fire & police departments how to rescue victims during an active shooter situation. The tourniquet issue you discussed was a big problem, and we were sure to pass on the info to the agencies we taught. The NAR CAT tourniquets you recommend are the standard carried by most agencies in the Chicagoland area. We tested several tourniquets and compared several retailers. We found that even if you think you're buying a good tourniquet, some suppliers (usually selling via Amazon) will send you a counterfeit product that will fail. We've had the tension bar crack, Velcro fail to stick, and failure of the tension strap as you demonstrated. You're not going to find a quality tourniquet for under $20 - $25. Fortunately, the chance of you needing one is low, and you don't need dozens. So, spend the $ up front for a good one. If you want a "practice" tourniquet, then buy a cheap one.
Lastly, North American Rescue has a few good videos showing how to use a tourniquet and other products. We show these to the medics and officers during the RTF classes. I highly recommend watching them. Thanks, again, for posting this video!

SWAT medic here and this is just my opinion. The majority of constriction pressure should come from tightening the strap. The windlass rod is only meant to be twisted once or twice for additional compression. The minimal amount of fabric/material attached to the rod will not allow 7 rotations, as demonstrated in this video, and should not be expected to withstand this amount shear force. Tourniquet application failure is most likely due to improper application tactics.

@@tatatillo4314Nope. I applied a tourniquet on myself that I bought from Tacticon Armament to see if they worked. It only took 2 and a half, half turns of the windlass to get occlusion. Because I applied it correctly and pulled the tourniquet good and tight before turning the windlass. This chump got nearly 8 turns and never got occlusion and snapped the strap because he applied it wrong. I wouldn’t trust this chump in an emergency.

  • @Saltfactorynz

I think the reason why people go for these is that CAT tourniquets are priced ludicrously for what they are. And you can justify it all you want but for a product that has basically no RnD (the concept have been around for 20+ years) and cost basically nothing to produce en mass, they should not cost 30 usd each. If people are opting for a counterfeit Chinese item instead of the original then it’s too expensive. It’s price gouging simple as that.

Downside of teaching with these is, people will not recognize a faulty tourniquet when they get to use them in a life or death situation. The fact that it can be twisted this many times (a proper CAT tourniquet is effective at 1 or 1,5 spins) tells us it's crap.
In a situation where every second counts, there should be no confusion over the effectiveness of the tourniquet.

Off this topic but I want civilians to realize that if they are bugging in and have their domain protected as good as they can, the Marauders and zombies will eventually be able to overrun and kill you in your house.
It can be good for you to guard in your domain but in worst case scenario, please, locate a couple of sniper positions around your domain and guard your domain from that point where you can shoot them as they go in or out trying to steal your supplies. That is your best chance to save your life and still be able to use your supplies.
Also, as all artillery soldiers know, shoot and move, shoot and move. Once you fire from one location your chances of being recognized are strong. Move to your next firing point.
Your house is a red LZ for zombies and desperate Marauders.
They will be making bad decisions trying to go into your storage zone. Kill them from a point outside of that zone.
Leave bodies for others to see that was not a good idea to go there.
This training that I'm sharing with you is for ultimate extreme scenario. Tough survival for you but with extreme scenarios it may be your only chance to live and still use what you have prepared for for so long.

The best tourniquets is your t-shirts. It does not need a lot of pressure to constricts your major artery. Overtighten the tourniquet can also cause necrosis on the tissues because it constricts the O2 flows to those parts of the limb. A lot of battlefields amputation because of loss of O2 to the tissues due to prolonged of overtighten tourniquets. The pressure applied must be sufficient to stop the hemorraghe but still let enough oxygen to preserve part of the uninjured tissues. There is a reason you need to write the time tourniquet being applied so doctors or medics knows how long it has been that the tissues below the tourniquet is being deprives of O2. All and all use this saying, “Too tight will died, to loose will burst.”

I use the CAT for my primary TQs and self-aid staged for 1 handed use
I also incorporate the SWAT-T (stretch, wrap, and tuck) TQs because they are multi use and can be used for compression in various applications as well as a TQ as intended. They serve multiple roles very well

North american rescue's tourniquets are also made in china. If you apply it correctly you dont need to put 5 rotations on the windlass. I cant find info on where the tacmed is made but it does appear to be very high quality so ill take that recommendation and buy a few.
