I had a 9mm kidney stone , caused absolutely the most severe pain I’ve ever felt , 3 trips to the ER. My urologist removes the stone in surgery and left a stint in me. It was in there for 4 days causing me mild pain and some discomfort during urination. Each day was less painful. On the 4th day after surgery I was instructed to pull the stint out by the string attached and hanging out of me. I was mentally disturbed at the idea of pulling something 2ft long out of my urethra. I got in the shower took a few deep breaths and gently pulled it out. Removing the stint was way less painful than I expected and I feel great with it removed. Still some blood in my urine but overall I feel great . I will now be drinking more water and hope to never have another painful kidney stone. Thankful I am in recovery😀

Hey man, how are you! I just got this procedure done today! Same thing. I had an 8mm stone. Damn thing blocked me from pee'ing. So much pain! They laser blasted the stone and then wen back in and blasted 2 more little one's in my kidney - so I'm free of stones! YAY! So happy! They then went in and put in a stent. I'm pee'ing so much blood and it hurts like hell after urination. I'd say, nearly as much as having the stone... Damn it hurts! Did you feel the same way on DAY ONE? I'm actually going back there in 2 weeks and THEY WILL REMOVE the stent (on a string) for me; not me doing it myself. They might want to check me over...

Just finished my ordeal from laser operation to stent removal over the past week. One of the worst weeks of my life in terms of pain and discomfort, almost as bad as the damn stone. Stent removal was very quick but not without discomfort which included pain and burning. But like I said, at least it was fast. Burning and bloody pee for about a day after stent removal. ONE ISSUE I HAVEN'T READ HERE AND WAS VERY ANNOYING (though I haven't read everything here) IS THE NEAR CONSTANT DISCHARGE OF BLOOD/MUCUS FROM THE URETHRA OPENING THE ENTIRE TIME, WHICH IS STILL GOING ON. Needed to use feminine pads/panty liners to protect my clothes.

@@lilyanrs, mine wasn't 8mm. I've been told it was actually 1.2cm. Don't be scared at all. When you go under, it's really quick. I was joking with them all in theatre. They were all really cool, joking back. It's a simple procedure for them. I got mine lasered. Seemed to go quite well in the end. Don't worry.

I had a stent placed after a hysterectomy because my uterus and fibroid were causing bilateral hydronephrosis.. to me the stent feels like a worse version of hydronephrosis, I have a constant 24/7 urge to pee that’s driving me mad coupled with pain. I feel like doctors downplay patients pain a lot, maybe because they see so many people I’m not sure but it is definitely not something so minor as described in the video. I have one week left with it and it’s removal can’t come soon enough.

  • @dlkmrk67

I was recently slammed (out of nowhere) by 4-5mm kidney stones. Two were lodged in the left ureter which sent me to ER. The pain is indescribable and relentless.
A stent was immediately placed to clear the blockage and surgery was scheduled 10 days later so the infection had a chance to clear. THE STENT PAIN IS HORRIBLE AND YOU WILL BE MISERABLE. After surgery to remove the stones, the stent was replaced as a precaution of ureter swelling and another 8 days of stent agony ensued.
I've been completely panicked for the last week reading comment after comment about the barberic procedure and pain involved to remove the stent. Happy to say I experienced ZERO pain and nothing was given for numbing during the procedure. It was a little uncomfortable due to pressure but even that was over in less than a minute.
All of this to say everyone is different so someone else's experience won't be your experience. My suggestion, take something for pain prior to the procedure "just in case" and relax. The relief is immediate and I'm so glad it's over.
    Good luck to everyone.

    This might be helpful, (idk)
-Try to only drink CLEAR liquids this will help get rid of the blood in your urine
    -7up (best if warm)
    -Water (LOTS of water)
    -Sprite (best if warm)
-Clear sparking water (make sure it doesn’t have much sugar and no caffeine)
-Gatorade is also okay towards the end. Just take small sips at a time and don’t drink too much of it.
-Take it easy. Walk slow, try not to make any sudden movements, slowly sit down and slowly get into bed (ask someone for help if you need to)
-Limit your protein, caffeine, salt, and sugar
-eat watermelon (trust me, it helps)
-avoid ALL spicy foods, citrus, and tea.
-when you lay down, don’t lay on your back or stomach, you’ll wake up in a lot of pain if you do. Lay on your side that doesn’t have the kidney stone. So if the stone is in your left kidney, lay on your right side (and vise versa)
-Eat small meals the whole time, not just in the beginning. Eating large or regular sized meals may give you stomach pain (whether it’s only little or a lot) and it might make you a little nauseous. And that mixed with the kidney stone pain, oUcH.
-Dont be scared to ask someone at home for help. I’m only 13 so I still live with my parents. When my mom goes to work, my dad helps me get up if I can’t get up on my own, he brings food and drinks to my room so I don’t have to walk around much. And when my mom’s home, she helps me. She stays in the bathroom with me when I take showers because I keep falling over for some reason? 😂 and she brings me food and water, helps me walk because holy Jesus, walking hurts like hell. (It will be different for everyone though. Some people may not even feel the stent, and others won’t be able to walk at all. It just depends)
-keep a bowl, bag, or trash can with you at all times. Even with the pills I have that are supposed to help with pain and get rid of nausea, I still get really nauseous out of no where.
-Peeing the bed is normal! If you notice that when you wake up, your bed is wet, it’s okay. It happened to me a few times. Sometimes it feels like I’m peeing lava, and other times I don’t even notice that I’m peeing. It just comes out. So I suggest sleeping on towels.
-Dont go anywhere. Stay home. Have someone else do your grocery shopping.
-blood in your urine is normal, BUT if your urine is a bright, cherry red call your doctor.
-wear comfy clothes. I just wear baggy t shirts and underwear (and if it gets cold, sweatpants) Don’t wear jeans. They make the pain a lot worse.
-if you have the hiccups, sit up. Don’t lay down. Sit up and chug a glass of water. It works every time for me.
Sorry that was long, but I hope it helps

I'm amazed that only about a third of people have "some" pain while urinating. I had my stent in for a week after the stone was taken out. Every time I urinated I howled! The goose bumps were over 90% of my body. It was intense and sharp with the slightest hint of distant pleasure and, no, I'm not a masochist. Then for a full 20 or 25 seconds after the urine stopped flowing there continued a different, eye roll inducing, intense pain ever so slightly related to some pleasure center but mostly pain. It continued until I pulled the stent out on the seventh day. So weird. Very strange week. Oh and the nagging pressure to constantly pee was quite bothersome.

The best way i can describe having a stent is a side cramp but very minor, no pain just you know it's there. Urination after surgery is painful but with Azo it made it easier, so get that asap.
Removal is best described as nasty pinches at the tip of you ... you feel it once when they put in the anesthetic, a second when they insert the scope, and third when they remove the stent, all this from 1min to 30 sec.
Psychologically you may feel a lil trama, after all it was done at a sensitive spot but Valium works well with managing that. Take another Azo and take a nap, you WILL feel 100%better the next day ... trust me ...
I just had this done last week.

The first time I went to the bathroom after having a ureteral stent placed, I almost passed out. But guys, there’s hope! Thinking about the hydraulic problem, I quickly developed a technique that allowed me to go with no pain at all most of time, or minimal pain in the worst case.
Basically, I hold my breath and press, almost like I’m trying to poop, to create pressure on my kidney (sometimes, I press my hand on my back where the kidney is, which by itself probably has no effect; it helps, however, with visualizing/focusing on where I have to press against). Also, try to press out the whole pee in one go without pausing (which admittedly is a bit challenging at the beginning, when everything still burns). All of this seems to prevent the backflow of urine to the kidney, and hence the pain.

It went up into my kidney where it would swirl and make me vomit sometimes. I instructed the surgeon to remove it. No pain, kidney is less clogged, bladder infection is gone… try to skip stenting at all cost

So, if you placed stents remember you have to drink lot of water to reduce the pain. As more water will prevent stent touching the skin as it will be floating in between.

Had a pretty sizeable stone removed 10 days ago (16mm) by laser ureteroscopy. Then they placed a stent similar to the one shown in this video after the surgery was done, and since then I have following symptoms -
    1. First and foremost, peeing TONS of times. I believe my water intake has also increased but I spend half of my waking time in the loo. So annoying.
    2. Sometimes I thought I could feel something touching on the inside of my bladder, but I was not sure. After watching this video, I think my suspicion is correct - it must be the J-loop of the stent. It's a weird feeling when that happens. Not exactly painful, but slightly uncomfortable.
    3. 3 to 4 out of 10 times, blood in the urine. Wasn't expecting it to happen this frequently, but it does. Again, not painful per se, but I'm not exactly used to see my urine contain blood on such a regular basis.
    4. Urgency when I want to pee. Holy smokes, the urgency is for real. Whenever I feel I'm gonna have to pee, now I know that I have about 10 seconds before I wet my pants.
    5. Back aches after walks, or after being in some sleeping positions. It probably attributes to the stent in place, but I'm not sure. Mild pain killers work great when this happens, so nothing major.
All in all, these inconveniences are nothing compared to the acute pain I experienced when I had the stone, so I'm not complaining. Just wanted to share my experience with everyone who might be going through or planning to go through the similar recovery process. Hope it helped.

I've had 2 stints because of stones 3 years apart, no it isn't pain free when it's removed. They numb the area so you don't feel the wire being jammed inside you but it hurts like hell when they force the wire in there to grab the stint you can feel it move the entire way and when it grabs it it hurts. If I had to say what hurts the most it's the camera and wire to get the stint being jammed into your kidney because it's so forceful. It was exceptionally uncomfortable to urinate and I had to do it frequently. It was pretty uncomfortable and painful when it was removed but it was only a second. What followed was two nights of the worst pain in my life while blood clotted in my ureter and constituted my final two trips to the ER, the last one resulting in a full drug panel because they suspected me of drug seeking behavior because of the pain induced loud moaning.

Just got my stent removed using a flexible cystocope this afternoon (male, 53 years old). Overall, the pain was mild and bearable using just local jelly anesthesic. It's more uncomfortable than painful although the nurse told me that some patients find it very painful although most do not. I feel fortunate to belong to the latter group. The most painful part is when the tip of the scope passes through the prostate (as it's narrower there) but that is only for a split second. I give that pain rating a 6/10. Once the tip gets to the bladder, the pain dissapears. The next painful part is when the urologist retracts the stent out of the body. That pain felt like 5/10 when it goes through the penis but only last a second or so. Not bad at all. The worst part is that you will pee blood for the next day or two and the urine burning sensation in the first hour is pretty painful (7/10), but that urination pain subsides quick even just a few hours later. Good luck guys, it's really not that bad.

The stent is horrible for the first 2-3 days. I had to urinate before I left the hospital and the stinging was enough to make me jump off the toilet, no joke. I had surgery to remove a 6mm stone the day after Christmas. Had my stent removed this morning. Painful as usual, but I felt pretty good aftetward. Now, five hours later, I'm laying on a heating pad with pretty bad pain. I dont know why doctors say that removal of a stent doesn't hurt and you will have only mild pain after. I'm supposed to go back to work tomorrow. Not looking likely.

Just had surgery Tuesday for 4 kidney stones that are stuck in my right kidney. This stent is no joke i weigh 109 pounds. I'm nauseated and in a whole lot of pain! Unfortunately i have to have another surgery October 31st to remove the stent, it's up to high for me to remove it myself!! Hopefully he can get to the stones if I don't pass them myself... Apparently my ureter was to small to fit the camera in and the tools needed during surgery....

No pain from my stent I had a UPJ obstruction vessels crossing over my ureter stopping the flow of fluid for 7 years, started when I was 16 and only got it fixed with keyhole surgery now at the age of 23. The first year the unbearable pain would only come on every few months and would last about 5 hours without painkillers. If I caught it early with a painkiller it would only last an hour or two and never get really bad. Worst pain you'd ever feel in your life, like being kicked in the balls, can't breathe, can't move, can't talk, times that by 1000 and make it last 6 hours no position helps ease the pain vomiting from the pain and shaking. Even talking about it would set it off. Anyway every year it would become more frequent this year if was every week and then every day had the operation done on Monday and it's now Friday. I was very scared when I saw all these comments saying it was horrible pain but then I thought maybe people that had good experience didn't think to look up a video on it and comment they had a good experience so that's what I'm doing. No pain from the stent can't even feel it tbh and no pain in my kidney anymore couldn't be more grateful, it's gonna change my life.

Anyone have 2 stents for 3 months? My stone removal was postponed due to UTI and I have had both stents in for 3 months now. I work in concert production, which is physical labor that involves lifting and climbing. It has been torturous to say the least. Thick blood in urine during most work days, and my testicles/groin area constantly ache. I am finally clear for lithro surgery in 2 more days. I don't think I can continue working much longer like this. The last week I can barely walk, or stand up straight. Anyone have a similar experience. My moral is almost non-existent at this point. I feel like I'm slowly dying.

Went for follow up today and stone is still there. 15.8mm…needless to say I came home with the stent still in place and they are going to schedule laser lithotripsy. Not a happy camper. The stent is very painful around my bladder but at least I get to pee blue as of today… because they absolutely would NOT give me anything for pain…even right after the surgery.

Just had a stent inserted (4 hours ago), its the second one in 5 years. Whilst I understand the need for them it doesn't make it anymore pleasant. I have one 13mm stone and three 2 - 3mm stones, the stent will stay in between two and four weeks then they will go in an blast the stones to bits and take the stent out, it will probably take two surgeries :-(. The pain in my kidney and bladder starts when about to start peeing, its soooo bad, once mid flow the pain eases somewhat but it has me doubling over whilst trying to pee ! my urine is like a red wine sometimes with a couple of clots although the clots are lessening. I`ll be paying more attention to my diet going forward that`s for sure. Lots and lots of water, 1 cup of tea with milk per day instead of 10 !!, no spinach (which I love), no beets, no rhubarb, no nuts . . all the stuff I like :-) anyway . .I'm of to the loo 😞

It's not fun to remove it believe me,it has to be done slowly, but consistently, don't snail pace a stent removal if your removing it yourself, and definitely do not rush the removal, make sure before you remove your stent that you have emptied your bladder, urine can back up otherwise upon removal and that's more painful than any kidney stones you have ever had...it's not nice removing a kidney stent, get in the shower, take a deep breath or breathe through it,it can be removed in under 1 minute..peace out all👍👍 recommended time by eurologist after before removing is 7 days, drink loads of water, during this time, yes you will drown everybody on the titanic, but it helps to flush the lazered kidney stone pieces out..
