1964 Chevy Belair | Project Car Off the Road for Years, Lets Make it Roadworthy AGAIN!

  • A subscriber named Don reached out to me with this 1964 Belair he had for sale, and after lining up a free weekend to go meet him, we met halfway in Nebraska and I bought the car. This Chevy has a really nice floor pan, but needs some work in the quarter panels and outer rockers. The original 283 is gone but now in its place is a healthy running 350 small block Chevy. Lets make this old car roadworthy again after sitting for a few years.
    Thanks for watching!

Sounds super healthy Ryan. She has 4 doors but heck, I'm not picky and she has plenty of potential.

This is a decent car and it runs really well. If I had it, I would leave the drive train alone and just drive it and enjoy it!

Good find Ryan. I think she'd be a good candidate for a restoration. Would like to see the interior polished up. Too bad about the rear quarter panel. What is the mileage on her? Always enjoy seeing Felix and his interest in what you are doing. A good car cat!

I like it!. I've picked up cars over the years where they got laid up due to a bad carrier bearing. Many folks don't know about those and when bad, they make horrible noises.

    Awesome car!
Besides the damage to the quarter panel, the body is in fairly nice condition. I actually own a '64 Bel Air Sedan myself and it has been in my family since brand new! I am close to getting my car roadworthy after sitting for 40 years and will be swapping in a big block right away! My car is very solid for being original, but I will do a full restoration some day. However, for the time being, I just want to enjoy it.
If that was my car, I'd probably do exactly what I'm doing now. A full-size Chevy needs a big block! I hope someone restores this car.

Cool to see a Bel-Air not an Impala. It will have a nice life in Ryan's Chevy stable :)
Good to hear the '59 Biscayne will get the back window in again.

What a lovely base for a restoration and a perfect example for doing so! That engine sounds lovely (if a bit poppy on a couple of valves - hey, it could still come around), the interior isn't too bad at all and the body (as far as we saw) wasn't rotten - just a bit in the lower front fenders, rockers and lower rear quarters, but the driver's rear would have to be replaced anyway. The chrome and detailing looks all there and in great condition too and I love the original colour scheme....
Me? I'd probably replace the bad rear quarter, do the rust that needed doing and repaint it the original colours, tidy the interior and do what was needed in there and drive the beast as is. There are only two things I would modify initially - one is the exhaust system (it's gotta have a dual setup!) and the other is a smart set of alloy wheels.....say Torq Thrust D (charcoal centre, polished rim) or polished 5-slots.
Eventually, I'd also stiffen the shocks at the original ride height and add heavy sway bars front and rear. Basically, I want the car to look more or less stock, but be able to handle its own on the many winding roads we have in this country. I might eventually throw a mild cam in it for a little extra punch and the glorious loping idle, but that would be it. Headlights would definitely be replaced with a relayed set of Halogens and tail lights would sport LED bulbs. Sound system would be discrete, but built for cruising on a long journey. The body colour lends itself to adding 35% tints on the windows as well, but this is a definite nice-to-have. Overall, the car would be done tastefully in a complimentary fashion rather than radical......although I do like the retro idea of adding lake pipes (also know in the US as side pipes), but I'd have to see what I thought of it matching the look when all else is done.

Those are some interesting "coilovers" in the back there. Never seen those before.
I have seen those coil spring spacers though. Ol' Jim really wanted the jacked-up stance. 😉

  • @jamespn

Looks like the rear coil springs are spent because of the spring spacers and the coil over rear shocks. Nice score, any solid 64 Chevy even as a 4 door.

The Bel Air, in Canada, was also called a Pontiac Laurentian, just a rebadged Chevy and not a Catalina.

I remember seeing this listed. Good score Ryan. I'd think the frame is also bent in the rear. If it were on a frame machine rack maybe the body could be worked back. Some hammer and dolly work which pulling

Good stuff. Did you check timing with a timing light? If you didn't know look looks like it has window type distributor so with your meter you can set dwell by using an allen wrench (i think 1/8) into that window and adjust dwel. Can also use a vacuum gage to set timing and verify dwell. Keep it up Likes dem old Chebbies.

Hi Ryan. Both 1964s need a complete off the frame restoration to bring them back to brand new condition. 1964 deserves to be preserved. Just need a winning lottery ticket and all those beloved Chevys could saved and restored. Last trip to Iowa I saw a 1964 Impala sitting out in a field rotting in the sun.

@@IowaClassicCars Mr Kimball worked at the railroad and instead of going to Colorado he made sure the town went to where they were at. They were so happy they named the town Kimball after him. They named everything of consequence in the town Kimball and have capitalized on the name really well. I was impressed when I went there and took a lot of pictures. They did a good job. I was surprised that not all Kimball's were horse thieves or alcoholics.
