WILL IT RUN?? 1959 Chevy Biscayne Sitting for 20 Years in a Kansas Lean-to! LOCKED UP Engine!

  • I picked up this 1959 Chevy Biscayne about 2 months ago out of a lean-to barn in southern Kansas, where it had sat for about 20 years. the car is a one owner, original paint, and very solid for its age. This chevy had a locked up 6cyl engine at the time, so in this video we will work on getting the motor to run again and take it for its first drive after sitting idle for two decades!
    Thanks for watching!

My dad gave me his ‘59 in 1969. I drove this car for 2 years after patching up the floor pans. This is Ontario Canada. It was a black Biscayne 6 cylinders standard column shift. The body needed tlc but the motor was strong at 110,000 miles. Who knew this car would become such a desirable item. I could kick myself.

Patients and perseverance for the win! I'd clean her up and fix what needs fixed for it to be a safe driver. Sounds like the exhaust valve that was leaking sealed up. I bet if you recheck the compression it would be lots better now.

As an old time mechanic I can tell you all you had to do was to replace the bendix on the starter to give you a constant crank. I can really help you getting these 50's, 60's and 70's started. I'd be glad to help you. From setting the timing, replacing timing chains, re-doing the carburetor and overhauling the engine I am the man. Been doing it for 50 years. Glad to help before I die.

Just an opinion on this wonderful old 59; I would leave it exactly as it is. It's such a good example. If the engine was bad, then I might feel differently. There is one thing that you might consider though, there are some cool performance parts for 235s. You could make it a sleeper 6. Sure, it wouldn't be as fast as an LS but everybody puts LSs in everything, that's nothing eye-opening in my opinion. You get the wide eyes when you see and hear somebody take off with a six-cylinder like a bat out of you-know-where. That's such a cool car. Keep up the good work Ryan you're doing great.

That solid Gothic Gold is really stunning! I admire your dedication in trying to revive that dead engine--and then succeeding! 😀Your video had special meaning to me b/c I have the same car, except in Cameo Coral. I just had the roof & trunk painted Satin Beige, so now the car looks just like the two-tone model in the brochure! I have the same 6 cyl. w/Powerglide. This powertrain rivals the Cadillac in quiet and smoothess!

The motor seemed to have little to no blowby when it started & didn’t seem to smoke either which is a good start.
I’d complete a full tune up including setting point dwell, timing ,adjust valves, rebuild carb & change oil (use high zinc oil for ft cam) & new oil & fuel filter too.
Also change trans filter & fluid along with coolant & t-stat and may need a new rad too.
Go thru brake system & install new or good used tires
Then clean & detail the car best as possible & have fun taking it to car cruises or sell it.
But don’t trash this running 1 owner piece of automotive history by resto modding it.

The problem with the starter is the starter drive. You might be able to get it work properly by oiling the starter drive. This is just for future reference in case you run into this again, since you already have a new starter on the way. It won't always work, but most of the time it does. Also, it's not hard to change out the starter drive.
