Why are iPad Bezels so Thick?

- Why are iPad bezels still so thick? Look at the sleek edge-to-edge iPhone, and then the iPad Pro… the difference is hard to miss. But those thicker borders aren’t just for looks. On a bigger screen like the iPad, those bezels are actually useful, giving you a place to grip without accidental touches. Plus, they house the Face ID tech and front camera without needing a notch, keeping the iPad’s design clean in any orientation. Could under-display cameras finally give us that full edge-to-edge iPad? Let’s take a closer look at what’s really going on here.

The crazy thing is that the new iPad pro is thin and light enough to comfortably hold it with one hand. It really does feel magical that something so powerful could be so light.
Size
Brooo you ain’t alone it blows my mind every time it’s fr lighter than my phone lighter then the keyboard
It’s so thin it actually seem so fragile that it’s scary
It gets tired when you use it for a while. ive been using the ipad pro for a few months now, and its more comftarble to use it with 2 hands
@@MinebIox nah they built for average wear n tear there’s been times where I’m like nah it’s over and it’s nicked but overall fine
As you mentioned, the bezels on the iPad serve a purpose. They make it easier to hold the iPad without risking accidental touches. For that reason alone, I don’t think Apple will ever shrink the iPad’s bezels to the size of modern smartphones. If they were going to, I believe they would have done it by now. They’ve already reduced the bezels on the iPhone, Apple Watch, and even the MacBook-adding a notch in the process!
By the way, I felt the video ended a bit abruptly. I think you've done a great job by asking a question to engage viewers and adding a clickable link to a previous video, but the ending could feel smoother.
If I were you, I would consider:
- Asking viewers to leave a comment with their thoughts.
- Thanking them for watching until the end and for their support.
- Explicitly recommending one of your previous videos (maybe your first one, since it performed impressively well).
Here’s how I’d approach it:
- After your final question, say something like, “Make sure to share your thoughts in the comments below!”
- Add a small beep or another sound cue to signal the start of the ending segment.
- Show an outro screen with your animated character, plus a link to one of your previous videos.
- Thank the audience out loud, and maybe add a personal note, like, “I’ve read all your comments and…” or mention upcoming plans for the channel (keeping it brief).
- Close with something like, “If you enjoyed this video, you might want to check out my last video on…”
Of course, this is just a suggestion, and you should adapt it to suit your style!
Thanks for the ideas!
That is a full on review of the video 😮
They would have to add a notch or Dynamic Island to shrink the bezels, and apple will never do that
Samsung doesn't care about practicability, they did the same with curved displays on phone, thanks god they got rid of that.
@@alexandruciordas4941i actually had a Galaxy Ultra and loved the curved display, it felt like the screen is bigger.
Wow! The improvement in quality since your first video just a week ago is incredible. Your first two videos were already great, but you've really leveled up. I love the redesign of your animated character-it looks so much more modern. Keep up the fantastic work!
i mean, full screen ipads could be a reality - bezel mode (turns some of the oled pixels off and restricts touch to that zone)

The M4 iPad Pro is actually OLED, so that LCD limitation doesn’t hold. Palm retention software also exists. They’re just saving money.
palm rejection*
Well Apple did implement palm rejection on their iPad. I believe it is active when you use the pencil.
Actually the Matepad Pro from Huawei bezzels (idk how you spell it) are super thin, and as far i saw from a ipad user u boxing video, it worked perfectly fine.
@@Polish_Chihuahua*bezels
@@Polish_Chihuahuathin bezels make the iPad look ugly
Apple could remove the bezels that make the iPhone so thin, but here’s the magic: they could use dynamic bezels that appear only when needed, adjusting for different apps. You’d have a full-screen display for videos and games, and bezels would appear when necessary for reading and other tasks.
This definitely feels like the Apple way to do it, dynamic bezels with an under-display camera would be incredibly cool
Sounds like an awesome idea!
so dynamic bezels like the dynamic island?
would there also be an option to screenshot/screenrecord the screen without the bezels also appearing on the picture?
@@briffsqueeze4063 yeah!
@@iiAngel1cAqx I think the bezels won’t appear because, in fact, they don’t exist; you’ll probably see an extended screen.
I felt like the video was on a loop
I love the look of the iPad 10th generation. I don’t want the bezels to shrink, I think they’re the perfect thickness.
I always facepalm so hard when tech youtubers praise the thin bezels on android tablets. Like bro do you plan to hold the thing properly?
If you use a case you don’t really need a thick bezel, your fingers can rest of edge of case naturally
But this is talking purily about the ipad, not ipad and accessories
@@Adum96true but who’s actually doing that? who is stupid enough not to use a case with their 1300 ipad? i would rather have thinner bezels
@@levimcneil4136Apple still has to take into consideration that there are many Folio type cases out there that don’t have protection on the edges, you’r still touching the bare frame of the iPad. Folio cases only cover the back and front of the device, and only one side when covered. And many people out there use their iPads, even iPad Pros, with a folio case, or even a Magic Keyboard and folio case combo for when they need and want to use the iPad off the magic keyboard case. I for one do have both the Magic Keyboard case and a Folio case for my iPad Pro.
This only applies for standard full cases. There are also folio type cases and these cases do not have edge protection. They only cover the front and back of the iPad, and one side when covered. Many people use this type of case for their iPad. Some even do a Magic Keyboard and Folio case combo for when they need and want to use their iPad off of the keyboard case (I for one do this).
@@elijahdelacruz3204 true but i do still think the bezels could still get a little smaller. but honestly it doesn’t really matter on the ipads except the ipad mini those bezels look massive on a smaller ipad. when you have kinda big bezels on a 13 inch display you honestly never notice it. it really isn’t a issue
I prefer smaller bezels for SURE , imagine an ipad mini with an edge to edge display , 120Hz, Oled, it would be PERFECT

0:21 If that's what makes you sleep at night, then sure.
The large bezels saved me when i raged at a game and stomped on it, There was a hole in the bezels! And it was still useable with some sellotape, Phew!
For your information, the Galaxy Tab S10 ultra also made a notch, but it also added an option to cover the notch and make it flat. I think it would be better to turn off only that part of the screen if Apple wants to make a notch and be natural.
Here me out dynamic bezels oled screens can get completely black so if they just made it so when ur playing games or doing anything else with they would just go completely black and give u the bezels we are used to but when watching content they would magically shrink I think that would be sick
I will say, I have a 2017 iPad 10.5" which is the iPad with the thinnest bezels ever. They drive me crazy sometimes, literally no room to hold it
Maybe you don't have experience using any of Samsung's "Ultra" tablets.
They have a notch.
But they also have 14 inch screens. On a phone that is a maximum 6 inches or so, a bezel to house the cameras eats into a bunch of that space, no matter how much you shrink it. But you're already familiar with how, over time, people all agreed that the notch seems to "disappear" during use and you don't notice it (not so much for the 5 inch iPhone Mini)
On the tab Ultra, you are working with 14 inches of screen. And the notch on the tablet is smaller even than the one on the latest 6 inch iPhone. You have to go looking for it
And this is why the notch is only on the biggest of the Samsung tablets. The 11 and 10 inch Galaxy tabs have uniform bezels
I do have an idea though: a “Dynamic Frame” where they create a notch for the camera, but hide it by emulating the thicker bezels, and implement certain UI elements inside the “frame” like Procreate shortcuts, sliding through photos, live activities, status bar icons, etc.
kinda like the Touchbar and Dynamic Island, but it loops around the screen, now that’s something I’d pay good money for
But just like you said, you need them to hold your iPad and I used to get on the phone. It was a nightmare. I would just shoot randomly or I’ll just get out of the game randomly. I’m unless there’s a setting where parts of the screen are not affected, but that would be kind of destructive to the whole look.
After 3 or 4 years of using my m1 iPad Pro as my primary device (after retiring my gaming desktop), I’ve come to really like it’s form factor. I normally leave it in the Smart Keyboard case and use it as a sort of “touchscreen MacBook” type setup, but when I do take it out of the case and use it as a tablet, those bezels really do come in handy. I don’t think I’d want them to shrink. Like you pointed out, it’s a place to grab on to and they are symmetrical, which really comes in handy when using drawing apps and you need to frequently rotate the ipad to get the right angle with the pencil. I’m still kinda shocked I was able to replace my desktop with a tablet (although “tablet” isn’t exactly the right word here…it’s the M1 Pro model with the larger 12.9 screen that has the pro XDR panel, laptop shaped keyboard case, and Apple Pencil….its more of a MacBook Pro with touch controls and passive cooling). It gets the job done better than I thought. I expected to run into “but I can’t do that on a tablet, I’ll need to boot up my desktop” situation a lot, but TBH I’ve used my desktop literally once per year since I got the iPad Pro. Especially with Xbox gamepass on it, the iPad Pro has been a really good daily driver. I rarely leave home without it. It’s a good mix of “kinda a phone kinda a computer”
Would love to see content that is focused around other categories such as computers, consoles and more.
My next video is actually going to be on the topic of consoles!
I’m loving the bezels on my iPad. I wish my iPhone 16 Pro Max was bigger, no notch, more battery.
3 videos, and I love this channel already
I'm using the Samsung tablet, it has a thin bezel and I couldn't agree more with you about the holding
Woah I just noticed I’ve watched your first video about curved displays and found this on my recommendations so I decided to watch, you earned a subscriber
This video is really put well and has good quality. 🎉 As a Matter of fact I’m holding on to my bezels on my iPad to watch this video!
As someone who's used an iPad, Samsung Tabs and under display technology, bezels are a super interesting topic (for me personally ofc). Jumping from the iPad to the Tab Ultra, the smaller bezels were noticeable and the notch wasn't as intrusive as I thought. Under display camera quality is absolute garbage, for sure, but as someone who never takes selfies I 1000% prefer the extra pixels - its just less intrusive
Buuut ofc Apple will do things the Apple way. Their brand is based on quality so it makes sense why they've stayed true to the same formula for, what, 6 years now with their iPad lineup
Fun fact: the side bezels on the home button iPads are actually SMALLER than the ones on the latest iPads. Considering iPads are used on portrait mode frequently it's interesting to know the side bezels used to be smaller. Ig they choose the uniform bezels over the 2 different sized ones for asthetic reasons but its still pretty cool to know :D
I think apple has the thick besels to keep the 'uniformity' of the bezels and to keep the brand image.
They 2000% couldve made them thin but chose not to and instead increase them; maybe to keep the space for other components ,mabye to save on money since they make the screen smaller than the actual body of the device.
I think its to not have a device that has the screen as the actual body size ,since they could fit more into the device with bezel space
(youd be surprised, you could probably add another 1000 mah onto the battery with that space).
how can bezels be non intrusive, I literally can't watch content on notch devices... I had iphone 13 for years and couldn't watch videos unless they wouldn't go over the notch...
@@alexandruciordas4941 the tab s ultra has a notch much smaller than the iphones, also it has a giant screen compared to the notch, its barely noticeable
The old iPad Pro 10.5" has pretty slim side bezels. As slim as Tab S8-S10 Ultra.
this is my idea of how they could make the bezels thinner. make them thinner and make the area of the display that would be un the bezel not work so u can't accidentally touch it, BUT the bottom and top dose work because that's were u swipe to get out of apps and for control center. and make it dynamically change every time u turn the iPad to a new direction.
It would be cool but really doesn’t make much of a difference to me, no accidental touches are nice and it really does feel like there are in theory no bezels as there are no hole punches or notches it does just feel more natural I am using a m1 iPad Pro and I love using it
I like it, gives me room to hold it.
5:51 by the time apple “perfects” the feature and release, other companies would’ve perfected way before because they created it and added it so they can improve it as they go.
So far no one has perfected the folding phone tech, it still has many flaws, a lot of gimmick innovations also die silently ie the popup camera
@M40M40Y1NP31 You know fold phones have already became way stronger. Less easy to crack when folding, more dust proof, less lines.
(I don't have one, but reviews give all the proof)
one software update would completely eliminate the accidental touch thing..
The fact you could properly grip the iPad without accidentally "selecting" something on the screen is why I really doubt Apple will reduce the bezel size on its iPad models. Especially the Face ID equipped iPad Pro models, since you could fit all the Face ID sensors inside the bezels.
Im currently using an ipad 2 and the bezel is pretty big but i mean it's a 2011/2012 device and i like those thick bezels
Apple could make the bezels really thin but implement a bezel mode where it adds fake bezels and make them symmetrical to also hide the notch. and then when its on a stand like with the keyboard cases it activates the blacked out pixels for the full display
An actual good underrated tech channel ❤
A few weeks ago I got the iPad 10, every time I go on it I touch the screen and trigger a random input like at least 3 times in 20 mins
Watching this video on my iPad Pro M2 and the first thing you mentioned is the most relatable one
I like the bezels on the first four iPads.
They could still slim down the bezels the to the size of the faceid unit on the iphones and carry that uniform border across the entire device. They will eventually though but not now otherwise theres less reason to upgrade we'll get there slowly.
nah ipad is still best with thicker bezel not everyone has tiny thumb
As a case person I don't mind the thicker bezel.
smart touch rejection is a concept already used by many devices in past, apple just lacking behind as usual. examples you might ask? well samsung's curved displays, xiaomi wraparound display, the huawei mate xt (tri-fold), all of them use that concept
My question is why does the previous iPad Pro with an lcd display still have slightly thinner bezels than other ipads
In all fairness though, the iPhone's Dynamic Island height is only ~6mm, compared to the 7mm bezels of an iPad, so there isn't much of a difference, but it is a better difference nonetheless.
I’m using an iPad 9 and so to see the newer iPads the bezels look a lot thinner.
Dunno about the oled/lcd justification. But yeah, tablets need thicker bezels or they need to improve touch rejection when it is needed. I got a small tablet with thin side bezels, and it is hard to hold it without triggering something.
This video did not need to be 8 minutes long 💀
Now that’s a good explanation why the big bezels are needed on the iPad
If under camera display technology gets perfected and implemented by Apple, what will Apple would do with amazing cool features like the Dynamic Island?
They could sacrifice the Dynamic Island feature in favor of a under camera display but I don’t think people like me would like and appreciate it although it will make the display less distracting than ever. Hopefully Apple finds a way to keep the dynamic island alive while transitioning to a new display technology.
Does nobody notice how He repeats himself?

They should leave the bezels as they are why change it if it already works me as a person who plays on a tab (same bezel size) its just nice having those

Simple, on point, practical
on the under display camera, can't they solve the blurry images issue with A.I? like the screen is always there, it's just a constant, just use A.I in the image processing pipeline to remove that constant and get a clear image. That would be a very useful way to use their A.I bs
honestly I think the best sized iPads are the iPad 1 and 2
What was that game he was playing at 4:22… with snow cannons, bombs, fire orbs. Looks fun

i think its also because phones sells much better than ipads thus they put more effort into the bezels. Same as with monitors and tv's

I’d rather say the bezels are just a way for Apple to cheap out on the iPad and continue to rip customers off instead of making the iPad better value for money.
Bezels make sense on an iPad. What doesn’t. Are sense is how big they are on the mini and iPad Air vs the pro simply to make them feel less than premium and make people want to switch.
To answer the question of why iPads have thick bezels, all you need is some common sense

Cause palm inputs are annoying. Don’t reduce the bezels bruh
But why can’t they make a little bit thinner? Cause the camera is not at the edge of the bezel
One of my 3am thoughts 😂
they should actually be thinner. the bezels only get in the way. The Samsung Z fold 6 and Tab Ultra has much better bezels. 🤷♀️
its so there doesnt have to be like a notch or bulge out or smth we dont want that

They should have at least shrinked iPad mini screen bezel. It’s way too thick
To give your thumb somewhere to be. Saved y’all 8 minutes.
Cause you have to hold them. Next question.
Be there when few year later they will sell it as innovations
Great video! Subscribed!
It’s a palm thing I believe
I think Apple definitely got lazy first of all it’s 2024 and only iPad pros have OLED? Why? They definitely have the technology and resources to add OLED screens on the entire lineup. Secondly, I’m typing on an iPad mini right now and I can tell you the bezels could literally half of the size they are right now, it would still fit the front camera and it would still be the perfect size for holding the tablet and not touching the screen. They came up with a new iPad mini after 4 years and literally changed nothing about the design. If they made thinner bezels it would look so nice
Underrated
Modern tech is not very ergonomic is it even with bezels, good thing kid’s cases exist!
Umm who holds their ipad with their thumbs?… you just hold it with your fingers and press ur palms on the side…
