  • In this video, I react for the first time to System Of A Down performing "Chop Suey". In this video, I analyse their amazing performance, explain and demonstrate Serj Tankian's vocal techniques and I'll tell you what I think made it so great.
    This was the second installment in my SOAD journey! I also enjoyed Daron Malakian's vocal contribution very much!

      "And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit: and having said thus, he gave up the ghost." In the Christian religion, these are the last words spoken by Jesus Christ as he died under crucifixion -

      Apparently Serj didn't know how to finish the song, so the producer told him to just take a random book in his library, open it and read the first line he came across, and it was the "Father into your hands" bit, which fits so well!

    really like your interpretation on this song, and you’re pretty much right!
    from Daron (the guitarist) this song is about how as people we judge others based upon how they die.
    he used drug abuse as an example, saying that if he were to die of drug abuse, people would say he deserved it for abusing drugs in the first place.

      Pretty sure the "self-righteous suicide" part is a jab at christianity and the reason some of the critics hated the song.

    • @jaegybomb
      @jaegybomb ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Referencing the fact that Christ willingly let himself be crucified. "Father, why have you forsaken me" were famously his last words by some accounts and "I cry when angels deserve to die" can definitely reference the crucifixion as well.

    I don't think John gets enough credit for his playing on this track. His choice to play just behind the beat through most of the song creates a real sense on dissonance that you hardly notice at first. Also, his snare-snare-kick pattern during the verses is a little reminiscent of a heartbeat to me. It isn't until the bridge that he seems to get squarely in the groove. SOAD is one of those bands where every instrument has an important part to provide. Another great post, Lolli. Cheers from Florida.

    • @restojon1
      @restojon1 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This is an absolutely valid point, what's also interesting is how Shavo quietly glues together this and the guitar lines. Certain lines are allowed to simply sustain whereas others are (if my limited theory knowledge is correct?) Arpeggiated to meet the start of the bar or line. They're interesting enough to give a bit of flavour, draw the ear in the right direction but not overly busy. A good example of a bass player really on his game. What a rhythm section!

    • @Christopher-md7tf
      @Christopher-md7tf 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Doesn't sound behind the beat to me at all. Even if it were, it couldn't creat dissonance lol, that's a harmonic/melodic thing.

    The tattooed guitarist, main author of this musical masterpiece, seems to me more stoned than "surprised", honestly. And the desperation that leaks from his singing and lyrics is quite genuine, given his melancholic and depressed personality. Serj contributed, of course, in writing the lyrics and harmonizations, making this song a pearl of rare beauty. You did a good analysis, congratulations.

    My friend Andrés, whose father was in the band Beauregard Ajax, told me that Serj had a small issue towards the end of the song. So the producer of this track told him to pick a book off of the book shelf in the studio. He then had Serj turn to a random page. That's where we hear the verse "Father into your hands I condemn my spirit, father into your hands, why have you forsaken me, in your arms forsaken me, in your eyes forsaken me, in your thoughts forsaken me, in your heart forsaken me".
    I thought that was a cool piece of trivia everyone needed to know.

    • @alyxwages322
      @alyxwages322 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've seen that factoid (atributed to one of the band members in an interview) before, but I honestly dont' believe it. I feel like it's WAY too on the nose to have been chosen at random. "Father, into your hands I commend my spirit" is the last thing Jesus said before he died, and in the context of a song about suicide.... Also, as someone who is really good at depression, the idea of being forsaken by god is extremely real. My guess is that a post-9/11 anger at the christian god from a 'forign' band does not look good, so they came up with a story distancing themselves from the meaning. I also feel the same way about 'Don't fear the reaper' by Blue Oyster Cult: They say it isn't about suicide, but come on.

    Your ability to analyze music astounds me
    I was in a band signed by Geffen Records and we fell apart BEFORE OUR FIRST ALBUM was even produced... "creative differences"
    Anyways... I was never able to create at this level. I could play anything you threw at me, but I was always blown away at others abilities to create music with complicated synergies.
    And here you are able to pick out those extremely little nuanced creative tones and nail it the very first time hearing it.
    Amazing. I always get hit in the feelers, but it takes me a bit to break it down. Maybe because I am mainly listening to the guitar on the first go through...

    Your channel has recently become one of my favorite on this site. I came here originally for the beatboxing stuff, but you keep putting out extremely informative (and useful!) bangers and making me like your personality >:(
    Faux aggression aside, I really am enjoying these metal reactions. Have you ever listened to Rage Against the Machine? I get the sense you might enjoy a lot about them if you haven't. The song Wake Up in particular might be interesting to you. Possibly.
    Anyway, no pressure. Just keep being you and doing what you like.

    I think something that a lot of people miss in the significance of "why'd you leave the keys upon the table?"... you leave the keys on the table when you check out... when you don't intend to come back. it's the single most haunting lyrical line I can remember hearing.

    Absolutely, victims of this need love and encouragement! I think they mean this kind of mental illness is a sign, that you WANTED to have something like this deep inside yourself to be able to wake up on the fact what life really means for you and what you need to think and need to do (work things out, not suiciding yourself). It is not disrespectful of SOAD, only a little dangerous, but truth hurts... It has to hurt, otherwise you wouldn't change. In my opinion, it is an illness, which you created yourself like alcoholism.
    They didn't say "no one would care if they died". You need to realize that life is painful and has to hurt you sometimes or even often. Then you don't kill yourself.

    This song is called Chop Suey is because the original name for it was Suicide, but label and stuff didn't want that name for the song so they chopped it in half. So yeah, you're kinda right with the play on words. Chopped Suicide is Chop Suey.

    When I was performing this type of music, I found it helpful to loosen up by singing long low notes. John Lee Hooker, Johnny Cash, etc. 15 minutes of that makes an hour of screaming like a beast much easier. On rough days put 2 drops of tea tree oil in a shot glass of water and gargle it until you want to vomit. Best to do this outside with a glass of distilled water in the other hand. Show business, break a leg.

    This is from memory so I might have a couple of the details wrong. The line that includes "Why have you forsaken me" is completely random. It was their manager or a producer that challenged Serj to open a page of the bible, without looking and put his finger on the page. Then said include this in a/the song somehow. As you can see, he did it.
