    When all my favorite band of the 70’s like UK, Renaissance, Yes or Genesis had become pop, this band have saved the prog genre in the 80’s. For sure some sounds dated, but their musics was freshness for young prog lovers like me. Excellent choice Nathan.

    I am of an age that I could have become a big Marillion fan in real time. Unfortunately they never hit it big in the States. Only Kayleigh do I remember hearing on the radio. "Discovered" them just a few years ago starting with this song. I love how they jumped in with both feet with this overblown, unabashedly sentimental and poetic song. I could see how it would turn some people off, but I was hooked right away.

    I have been a fan of Marillion since I heard the B side of their first single on the radio (Grendel), I went out the next day to buy the single, and now have a collection of well over 100 albums. I have 4 versions of this album, the original vinyl, a 1CD version, a 2CD reissue, and the more recent multi disc reissue.

    I have heard of Marillion but was put off by the comparison with Gabriel era Genesis.However this song I like, so will encourage me to explore them further. The singer has a more forceful style than Gabriel and this drew me in.

      I too was put off , but it was the other way around for me. When Real to Reel ( live album ) was released I bought it , cos my friends and I had got concert tickets. And then heard that they were very similar in style to early Genesis. This whole 1984 scenario put me on the long and neverending road to prog heaven that I am still on to this day. Never looked back. The first 4 Fish -era albums and 2 live albums are indispensable to me. All great listens too.

    The more I listen to this album, the more I love it. I’m a massive fan of Fish era Marillion- and Gish post Marillion, never really got into Hogarth’s Marillion. I think because of Fish’s lyrics and presence. But the lyrics to this are very personal to me, the album was bought by my first boyfriend and we split up and I always regretted that - we got back in touch and we’re planning to meet again after30 years but unfortunately he died from Covid suddenly… so yeah I feel this one.
    Chelsea Monday is another superb track

    Hi Nathan and Jana. Great choice. The most important prog band for me because those first 4 Fish -era albums got me into the genre to start with. Never looked back ( but most certainly listened back , if you get my meaning ) Fish is heavily influenced by VDGG and obviously Genesis. Soundtrack to many of our lives I suspect. Great reaction Jana and Nathan. 😍

    I loved Jana's support of your idea of making a tier list of Marillion albums - however I definitely understand the anxiety! I find it very hard to compare Fish x Hogarth stuff. BTW I went for the first time to a Marillion Weekend some weeks ago and it was AMAZING. If you have the chance to attend one, do not miss it!!

    Cool reaction. I agree with your take Nathan about this tune and period, especially the debut album. Their sound was much of a molding of the 70's progressive rock, but with a modern (at the time) sound. Almost AOR or at least New Wave tinges. The guys were listening to New Wave music as much as the 70's stuff.
    Also, having Mick Pointer as their drummer impacted that 1st album quite a lot. He ended up leaving the band after that record, and before having a few other names come in, including Jonathan Mover who would play with GTR among others, they found Ian Mosley whose been with them ever since.
    I'm very curious to check out your Marillion Albums rankings video Nathan. There's no correct or incorrect rankings, even though when I did that very list last year, I received a few negative comments about mine.

    • @NathanOnShuffle
      @NathanOnShuffle  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I will definitely do some kind of ranking…it might end up being a collab with another TH-camr, but there will definitely be something- I’ve been having a great time going through all their albums over the past several months…

    Very intelligent analysis Jana I remember this band fondly from the 80s saw them live many times, I kinda like both singers equally, they’re almost like two different bands.

  • @digibirder
    @digibirder ปีที่แล้ว

    Your open minds enable you both to enjoy so much more music, and that's great! A band like Marilliion is about the subtleties. The more you listen with an open mind the more you appreciate. They don't blow you away with technical virtuosity. But once yu start to hear the little details you realize how great they really are. Just one exapmple: Tomas Haake of Meshuggah counts Ian Mosley as an influence. Just think about that for a moment... Keep up the great work Nathan!

  • @theheepster
    @theheepster 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Good analysis by Jana.
    By the way, she is absolutely right when she encourages you to do a Marillion album ranking. An opinion is just an opinion and you have to be allowed to express it.
    My opinion on the 2 Era's of Marillion is that I absolutely prefer the Fish Era. 1. because of the singer and 2. because the music was not as predictable as today's Marillion. Is an opinion nothing more.

    I wouldn't say that Marillion fans are all that strong on their views of the Fish v's Hogarth eras; I mean, on the one hand you have those who think all of the best music was with Fish, and on the other, you have those who are just wrong... ;)

    I think your problem is that this came out at the beginnings of Prog Metal (The twin Godfathers of Prog Metal, Queensryche and Fates Warning put out their debuts in 1983.). Whereas I think Marillion are kind of a mix of Prog Rock and Prog Metal, they are more Prog Metal here. And make no mistake, there are huge differences between Prog Rock and Prog Metal. This song really sounds like a missing link between the two styles. In structure, it is very much like the song Guardian by Fates Warning. Interestingly, even though their genre is Thrash, Megadeth and Dave Mustaine compose many songs this way. Each song is a mini symphony with several distinct parts. Anyway, that background might help you a bit.
    I liked how you got the main point of the song, but you missed the best part of the lyrics. They take childhood games and fairy tales and use them to express the feelings of a man who just let his ONE get away and is, now, trying to figure out where he goes from here. I think it is a brilliant way to get a common theme across.

    One of my favourite Marillion songs. I like both eras, but never became a huge fan. My friends who are super fans have tried to convince me that I should love them unreservedly, but I can't. I can't pin it down to any one factor, but I think they reminded me of early Genesis, and they suffered a bit by comparison. Also, I prefer lyrics less melodramatic and self pitying. I prefer Greek myths, interplanetary travellers, historical stories and folklore.

      @@langdalepaul Oh, I'm sorry, didn't realise you answered. Well, long story short, the version you played was not the original 80's version, it's a remix, the very end is definitely different, Fish doesn't keep asking so long "do you love me". Any other differences are quite subtle and so hard to find identify and describe, but that was a big one for me.
      This is probably the one I'm most familiar with...
