- I take a walk from the well-known Coney Island area, through the boardwalk, and on Brighton Beach Avenue to Sheepshead Bay. I also cross over the Ocean Avenue pedestrian bridge. There weren't too many people on the boardwalk, but business was thriving in Brighton Beach and throughout the Sheepshead Bay area.

In the mid-1970s, Brighton Beach became a popular place to settle for Soviet immigrants, mostly Ashkenazi Jews from Russia and Ukraine. So many Soviet Jews immigrated to Brighton Beach that the area became known as "Little Odessa" or "Little Russia"
It was always Little Odessa , at that time the largest wave of immigrants came from Odessa
I began my life in Brighton Beach. My dad, George Friedland, owned the Bright Spot Luncheonette, located on the corner of Brighton First Place and Brighton Beach Ave. I started working there at the age of 5 on Sunday mornings, washing dishes and making up the Sunday papers. I knew so many people from the neighborhood, and this film brought me back to the 1950's and 60's. I would play in the park near the boardwalk, go to the beach, go to coney Island occasionally. Most of the buildings are the same, as well as the trains above the avenue. Businesses changed, as well as the neighborhood. Brighton was 99% Jewish back then, and probably still has a large Jewish population, but many are Russian as you can see by the businesses. I feel very nostalgic when I see the neighborhood, and one day I have to get up there for a visit. I've been living in southern NJ for many years now. Thanks for a great video.
Now I'm having the most exciting memory blast. I grew up in these stomping grounds of yours today. Miss them dearly! Thank you for taking me through Coney Island, through Brighton Beach which by the way has changed dramatically but looks absolutely unrivaled with the amounts of foods and various sundry stores. ROFL 🤠- Once upon a time when I was an 'ActionKid' grewing up in the Bronx, NYC, I would feel like the subway train would fall off of its track from the high platform and down into the streets. 😱
that so called supermarket with all the flowers is where a saw just about every classic 80s movie it was a movie theater when i was a kid.
What a beautiful day for a walk in Coney Island, used to visit when I was growing up. Wonder Wheel scared the daylights out of me.

I had an aunt that used to live at Coney Island (around Stillwell Street and Stillwell station), and I remember visiting her here in 1982 along with the rest of my family.

Great video. I was in Brighton Beach some weeks back and did a lot of walking. Bklyn, my old stomping grounds.
At 34'35" you are at the Netcost mkt. That used to be the Oceana Movie Theatre. Next to that was a shop called "Diamond's" which was a dry goods store owned by Neil Diamond's parents. There was also a great Deli called Zei Mar. I grew up there in the 40's and 50's.

I notice the Corner of Shore Blvd mets Emmons Ave there used to be an Boat Slip in the 1970's. Emmons Ave had an major redevlopment in the Late 90's. Igo back to Roll and Roster for Roasr beff sandwiches. In the 1960's I was going to Jimmys to get Hoggies at Sheepsbay Road

If you ever come back to Sheepshead Bay, walk the length of Avenue U from Ocean Ave to Coney Island Ave.

This area now looks a lot like Toronto's Harbourfront area and boardwalk; what a difference a few decades make.

Coney Island in Brighton Beach always feel more natural in the summertime because it's like living in Florida and that bridge at Sheepshead Bay I always go there because I want to get a good look at the swans swimming

Brington Beach is one of few better under bridge economic zone in Brooklyn.
There are one in Bensonhurst between 18th Avenue to 25th Avenue, 86th Street
one in Borough Park, D line Subway between 55th Street to 9th Avenue 39 Street
one in Williamsburg, M L train between Mercy Avenue to Broadway Avenue.
I like to go to this fishing port. There are a lot of small fishes racing in the seaport if you go further from the beach of the Beach side, not in the Sheepshead Bay side.
The American Cruise Line is on the pier 3 of the Sheepshead Bay side. $65 for 4 hours trip whale watching.

I work there I love it. In summer at night in the lanes it's like Mardi gras. So many great memories. I love the place, the boozers, the people, the landmarks, the shops, and the views from the many hills (downes). Honestly I love it.

the scean with the warriors was located next to the Coney Island Amphitheater on west 21 street when i was a kid we use to go under the board walk but they fulled it up after the perfect storm the same storm form the george clooney movie back in 1992 the beach eroded too much. so they had to full it up.

I’ve been to the Nathan‘s a few times just because it’s iconic. But very disappointed and their service and the food is sub mediocre. It’s just a name at this point, so sad.
Was there recently $15.00 for a hot dog fries and drink. Fed most of the fries to the seagulls watching me. Too funny. They were patient!
@@schen5425 I was there and had to wait 30 min in line... the workers are super slow...I only went because a friend never been so I wanted to give them that experience.. Might as well take them to a Nathans dog cart in Times Square lol
