I worked at a kawasaki Suzuki Polaris ski-doo dealer for several years and remember when Polaris was pushing atv sales and I worked on a ton of these lol Joe you bring back a ton of memories dude , I love the different disciplines of fun you bring to us !! I am currently working on a 1988 cagiva wmx 250 for 2023 vmx race season !!! Hopefully in 23 I will head to California to run 2 stroke vintage classic 👌 😎 will be riding my Cagiva, my 91 Husqvarna wmx 125 and big daddy lol 😆 my 92 ktm mx 500
I too have work on a bunch of these same models. No valves on these guys lol! I had a husky 430 wmx I think it was an 83 or 85? Big heavy thing but it fly across the desert until I burnt down.
That's what's tough about picking up someone's started project. Perfect example of why you should always check the previous guys work to see if it was done correctly or even done it all! Good thing you checked that carb!
I enjoy how thorough you are at investigating every possible problem that stands in your way until the machine starts !!!! More people need your problem solving skills and perseverance!!!!
Great Job! To clean the needle seat You can take a Q-tip cut off one end and put it in your drill. spray carb cleaner on it and use it to clean the needle seat. It will polish the surface of the seat for a better seal.
Joe, 30 years ago and old timer showed me a trick I still use today with rubber tip on needle, after cleaning rub some brake fluid on it , softens and helps seal, it really works 😀
You can use a little valve grinding compound on the end of a q tip to clean the seat. Chuck the q tip up in your drill. Works great. I learned that from Musty1 here on TH-cam.
I quit watching "that other channel" because, while his technique may be fair, there's no love for the machines. just a quick buck for a flipper. after a bunch of "good enough to get it out the door" repairs, i lost ALL respect. guys that can wrench are a dime a dozen, 2vintage cares about his machines and deserves the views.
@mkuehn5450 I respectfully disagree. In my opinion, Mustie brings back obscure machines that are too far gone for most mechanics to even touch. I'd argue that shows a lot of love/respect for the machines. With 2vintage, he frequently doesn't check oil in machines before cranking and even running them. In this case, he ran it for up to a minute with absolutely no oil. I'm really concerned about the bearing surfaces of his friend's quad because of that mistake

That’s so funny and seems to be true. Vinny is definitely not a fan of Polaris machines. He acted the same way with the one you bought that is similar to this one. Smart dog.
Joe I think you did this guy a tremendous service. Just looking inside the carb, I think a half hearted attempt at cleaning was done. Your knowledge of the float height, and the bad o-ring was invaluable. Getting that mouse nest out was also very important and surprised your dog never tried to pull the atv apart. Many things you did will make this unit run properly. The low gear is very useful but not having 4 drive is not. You made this unit useful for him. Before you started the engine I thought you had checked the oil. He needs to buy some of that expensive wet clutch oil. I think ya'll turned the idle too low, as it misses a couple of beats while idling and when cold will not idle and warm up. Some people just will not touch the carburetor for good reason to see the kerfluffles you have gotten from other nincompoops. It takes your mental attitude to correct things and ya'll are ahead of the curve there boyo. This machine really needs a gas tank cover as the sun will destroy this one poste haste.
I bought a 05 Polaris sportsman 500 for 200$ cleaned the carb and it runs great it has been a good wheeler iv had it three years now starts before you can let go of the key

Joe ! If you get bored. Go to Craigslist canton Ohio, atv. There is a sportsman that looked just like this bike you fixed. 400$. I’m half tempted to go get it. Why. Because I feel like a atv mechanic watching all your videos. I feel like I could fix any bike now 🙄 🙄. Lol. But you have taught me a lot. And I kinda do feel like I can get something running 🤦♂️😂. Salute to Joe
Love your videos ! On those Mikuni carbs, I have a few different smaller 12mm wrenches that I grinded the fat outer open end part of the wrench off enough to get it in there to remove those choke cables. Another tip I picked from another TH-camr is after cleaning needle and seat to drop needle into the seat and lap it in a few twists. Keep the great content coming and give Vinnie a pet or two for me.
A 2000 325 magnum 4x4 camo edition cost me $150 for the bike, $20 for front bushings, $50 for a new carburetor, and $40 for a gel battery. It was a win that my kids desperately deserved.
Joe; for bringing back needle valve seats and other things that need cleaning up or polishing, look at the rubberized abrasives, like Cratex (their 778 kit is what I buy), on a pencil die grinder, or Dremel tool. They come in several grits, for aggressive to polishing. I use them very successfully for final polishing heads after porting. They'd make quick work of that needle seat.

Snap-on makes a line of wrenches that are made to fit in tight spaces like that carb, i have 10/12/14mm. They are both short and stubby, and thin at the end to get into tight spaces. Check with your local snap-on dealear, or mac tools dealer, sure they have the same thing...
I have either an 03 or 04 polaris trail boss 330 that was given to me. Had a new carb put on it by a local lawnmower repairman. It ran great, but gas poured out of the overflow spigot on the bottom of the carb til eventually it started flooding the carb and fouling out. Long story short, the float was bad on the carb. Couldn't find a new float, therefore I bought another new carb. First carb was installed by the repairman, second one I did myself due to not having a way to take it back to the repairman. And the fact that it was pouring gas out when he turned it back over to me and I just didn't know it. This one doesn't pour gas out. It idles great. But it doesn't have any power. When I try to ride it, it starts sputtering when I give it throttle and tries to die. And from a cold start, as it warms up to operating temperature, the warmer it gets, the worse it runs. When it's cold, you can hit the throttle while in neutral and it actually rev up somewhat decently, apart from the sputtering. But when it's warm, if you hit the throttle, it instantly sputters then dies. I know it could be a handful of things, but so far this is the second carb I've put on, replaced the airbox boot, solenoid. I have a new fuel pump on order and will be replacing all the fuel lines and filters. I'm not a carb guy and don't really know what to check and definitely don't know how to do adjustments. But from this novel of a description, what else could be going on? How do I get this thing running correctly? The way it's Supposed to run? I've even went to a polaris dealership to see if they would fix it correctly. But they said they aren't allowed to mess with anything over 10 years old.
Sounds like the float in the carb is set too high, not enough fuel in the bowel, Theres usually a metal tab that can be bent, but the heat = worse could be ignition too, sometimes when a cdi or coil gets bad heat can make them do all kinds of stupid things, Hope this helps.
