How ironic, I'm from Wisconsin to and had a similar experience with buying something. Few years back I found a CBR600 on Craigslist, I called the guy told him I'm coming to pick it up, he tells me yep he's home and to stop on down. I drive my dad's 77 3/4 ton dodge power wagon 130 miles one way to the guy's place, spent close to $100 round trip for gas to get this thing and once I'm there he tells me he just sold it to someone else about 10 minutes ago. I tell you, talk about pissing a person off that sure does it. I was so mad and I would never do that to anyone when selling something. Also the guy who bought it was local to the seller so even if I didn't buy it for some reason even though I told him I for sure was but even if I didn't he could have easily called the other guy back to come look at it since he was local and not driving 130 miles. So to anyone reading this please never do that to anyone because it sucks to be on the receiving end of something like that.

I just sold that exact model 2001 scrambler 500 4x4. i had it for 4 years and it was a maintenance nightmare most of the time. When I purchased it (for 2000) It needed a lot I didnt realize as well. new primary clutch, belt, breaks, master cylinders, caliper, petcock, tie rod ends, wheel and axle bearings carb kit and tires. Always ran great though..... Had it up for 2000 on marketplace ( all fixed)ended up letting it go for 1500. Good luck I'd run but I am nowhere near as skilled as urself.

Yeah I picked up my 2003 Suzuki Vinson 500 from someone on CL. He said all it needed was the rear break fixed. Never mentioned that the dang frame was bent. You literally had to cock the handle bars in one direction to go straight and because of the bend the front wheels were cambered off to one side. He also said it was a 2006. People are freaking liars when it comes to selling things.

34 running really rich. 33:12 it's running way rich
Sounds like you got a intermittent cutout on the ignition somewhere probably like the other guy said.
But it is running way rich .
If it starts again right now hold the throttle open see if it revs . check to see if your choke is stuck or something go from there I'm not going to diagnose it but I can😂

Use compressed air to install grips. It makes installing them easy.

Sounds like it could use a little more idle. Its kinda low idling when it sits and runs. Itll also help with the gear change as well.

Good worki kid! Get yourself an inline spark tester. That way your not pulling the plug all the time. And im sure you figured it out by now, clean the front magnet hubs and reground the brown off them .

If they get the slightest bend or gunked up the magnet in hub won't grap. I've done this to a few others 90% of time if anybody has issues this is problem

Have you ever what's called redipping belts before that are not in to bad if shape. Into what's called right stuff.,flex black sealer.,or rubber dips. From permatex.

Nice job. Me. If add a light bar the size of that front plate to match its length and itll look far better and have far better lighting for lights.

    Check all those lockout switches
When things like this happen , run a direct wire to the coil from the magneto or wherever the coil gets its power and bypass all of those switches. That's diagnosing.

My Mom's ex husband used to have a 500 Polaris scrambler, it was prolly around an early 2000s model and looked similar to that one, maybe a little more sportier, it ran pretty good. I think it was a 2 stroke, I could be mistaken or he didn't know what he had but I'm pretty sure he said it was a 2 stroke. It didn't sound like a conventional 2 stroke like a 250R or any others but it was an automatic and wasn't a racing 4 wheeler so it didn't scream but I don't remember it sounding like this one. But I rode it a couple times and I liked the fact it was an automatic, makes trail riding more fun.

400 were 2 strokes the 500 were 4 strokes if I remember right, been a long time.. had a few with bad transmissions (must have been common as I had a couple), or the 4WD didnt work (like this one). pretty easy fix (4WD), taking the transmission out not so fun.

Those throttle cable contact terminals are a common pain point for Polaris machines. They are supposed to be set to a specific distance apart

I feel like this thing has never really been looked after well.
Always patched up to get it running again, perhaps an oil-change (sure..), and then sold on.
Meaning, it needed "some" tlc because it never had any tlc before... ^ ^
