    As a former mechanic at a Polaris dealership, I can tell you the 300s and 250s 4x4 were designed to run their tires 2 sizes smaller on the front. It looks like you're running the fronts off a 400 4x4. If so, the original gear ratio on the chain can/will cause damage in the transmission if left as is. I believe I remember, you can mitigate this by changing the gear ratio on the front sprockets. Make sure the "Demand Drive Fluid" in the front hubs are full. There is a set screw on each hub, full is when it leaks out when the tire is rotated so that the screw is at 90 degrees or level. Those old Polaris 4x4 worked using electromagnets in the hubs. They are cooled in an oil bath, so the coil will burn out if the "Demand Drive Fluid" level is not maintained. They were around $150 each side back in the late 90's/early 00s, can't imagine the price now.

    • @viprgaming641
      @viprgaming641 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      You can get a new hub for $60. I bought one for my 2002 Scrambler 400 2 stroke 4x4. That was probably 4 years ago though

    These old polaris 2 strokes are gems. They are simple, powerful and easily upgraded. The machines themselves are tough and rugged. They're not perfect by any stretch as we can see through these outstanding videos but they are worth the effort given the the low initial cost. Once operational these old goats are unstoppable.

    • @2vintage
      @2vintage  ปีที่แล้ว +26

      Parts are also pretty cheap for them. I don't mid the older models like this one. Easy to work on too.

    • @williamwalter4882
      @williamwalter4882 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @@2vintage Same, just a quick tip about these 2 strokes. I've owned 4 of these polaris` and found that using a particular mix fuel-wise will nearly if not entirely mitigate ethanol issues. 1. Use minimum 89 octane. 2. Use Lucas upper cylinder lubricant @ 3oz/5gal fuel. 3. Use star tron fuel treatment @1oz/5gal fuel. I use that blend in ALL off road engines. If necessary to use 2-cycle pre mix I use Opti2 at 80:1. Never had a failure in any 2-cycle engine for over 30 years. If using oil injection (I do), just stick with the polaris 2 cycle ves synthetic. Again, never a failure, but that oil pump must be checked periodically for proper function.

      Seems a bit high. 50:1 is the normal no?

    • @williamwalter4882
      @williamwalter4882 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@FondelMikeRotch Opti2 is recommended at 100:1 for any 2-cycle. Amsoil Sabre also 100:1. So I take it to 80:1 with the caveat of the mild lubricity from the Lucas upper cylinder lubricant already in my base gas. It sounds crazy I know but Opti2 is seriously good 2 cycle oil - it's never failed me. The Germans know what they're doing. Again, this is for premix only, not injection.

      I have a large rubbermaid trash can that is at least 2 decades old. It is a light bluegrey with a darker blue lid. It has been outside taking sun and weather for decades, it is still flexible with no issues. I bought it at some normal box store. Yes they can make plastic that lasts forever.
      After they have a good formula they probably lobby Congress to outlaw some ingredient. That way the whole chain from engineers to plastiticians all get new work.

    The front suspension is very similar to a Polaris trailblazer 250cc 2 strokes, it was the first adult-sized quad I've ridden when I was younger, and I was always a whisky throttle kid, and it took it and ran perfectly no matter the weather or how long it sat, it was a tank, even when I ran out and got stuck without gas in my field it somehow started up and got me home, it was a great quad from my experience, and it now sits in a storage container on my uncle's property up north, I and my father plan to get it out of there eventually and restore it, it's sat up there for almost 10 years, I can't wait to see that machine again when we choose to grab it, as I'm thankful it was that quad that built up my love for small engines and gave me childhood memories I'd never forget!

I had made a switch box, and mount for my handle bar, with the parts from the winch control. Back then I didn't want to spend $80 for the handle bar one. Tip for ya. Sealed outlet plastic electric box I used. It's definitely worth fixing the starter. A paint, refresh on the plastics, and a good detail cleaning. Be a decent flip or swap. Down the road

Battery died in mine, was using pull start for a bit, then 4wd stopped working. II and own a 1999 Kawasaki, Prairie, 300 4X4. I owned a business that had a parking lot of just 200 feet short of a square acre of blacktop. I bought a winch and blade and mounted it myself and plowed the whole parking lot plus neighbors driveways and sidewalks for seven years. Only 3 times that I couldn’t plow because the snow was just too wet. If we were to get more than 10 inches of snow, I would get up like at 2 in the morning and plow, then plow again after it stopped snowing. Sometimes my thumb would get so cold I couldn’t press the throttle, I would have to go in and warm it up. It would take me like, 1 1/2 hours to do the parking lot if the snow was 3 inches or less.

    I had that same exact 4 wheeler as my 2nd 4 wheeler as a teenager and it was probably the best bike I’ve ever had. I bought mine used in like new condition and it was amazing!! It would go through water almost like a wave runner. As the exhaust blows out the bottom of the pipe instead of the back of the pipe. After several years the belt can unsealed and I could no longer go through water so I sold it, but was honestly the most reliable 4wheeler that I’ve owned and I own 5 right now. 2 Yamaha’s 1 Suzuki, 1 Honda 3 wheeler and a Kawasaki Mojave. The one U bought still hasn’t the original tires so it can’t have that many hours on it. I don’t know why they put the override button on the reverse that lets U go really fast in reverse. Was kind of useless in my opinion and cause mine to wreck as a young inexperienced teen driver. Lol Mine was a 94.

    Such a good quad to flip for cash. It's nice to buy something super cheap and fix it up and flip it for 3g but where I live even broken shit with no tires on stands go for 2500 obo but won't go down at all when you try buying.... You're lucky to find these great deals!! I've gotten ripped off so many times I gave up on the trade.... Great video love from the TH-cam OG,
    Me😂

    Joe I think you'd benefit from adding in some sta bil fuel stabilizer fuel treatment in your gasoline fuel for those machines you've been working on in your videos on your TH-cam channel bro.

    I have used at least 2 large bales of sand in the front and rear of my arc in the snow, and 5 in the box of my Utv plowing. But maybe our snow is wetter than yours, I found Utah and Colorado is dryer but have not been farther east.
