Hannah , I watched you from when you joined Fabric Cafe, then the making of your first quilt. Now you are teaching and I am very proud of you. I love watching you grow I quilt making ❤. You are becoming a great teacher. Thank you for sharing a different technique.😊
Great video, Hannah. It's so great that you can use charm packs or other fabrics to make a three yard quilt if you just work through the process. Thank you for sharing. ❤😊
I don't know how Hannah came to work at Fabric Cafe, but she has definately been gift to the store! Young Lay, you are a natural teacher and it has be fun to watch you grow as you have learned how to make these vidoes . It isn't easy to stand in front of a camera and talk, let alone teach at the same tme. You make it look like you have done it since birth (Quite a feat for a Newborn). Keep up the goo work, kiddo, you are a real Winner! 😊
Wow, one of the best videos. I do love how you told us your process. You really gave taught to think outside the box. I’m loving the expansion of your show with more great ideas.
Hannah, I am so impressed! You proceeded through this tutorial from start to finish without a hitch. Your quilt was a surprise on first glance. Note; I have yet to make a quilt. So far, I've been watching hours and hours of quilting tutorials. As a result, the sweet freestyling approach you took a time or two, while making your quilt, was something I did not expect. I am one of those people who likes to make the decisions, especially in anything I have creative ownership over. However, at times, I am a tad too perfectionistic for my own good. As a result, "stage fright" is a feeling I have come to know well. The potential for making a mistake, particularly while people are watching, tends to bring to mind images of barefooted me, hesitating to begin the fire-walk I foolishly imagine is before me. You were cool as a cucumber in this video. You chose to proceed without overthinking. In being fearlessly genuine, you were able to take your new quilting project over the finish line in a mere 30 minutes or so. 🙂 And, in the end, you lived to see another day! Only this time, you were, literally, invited to step out from behind the "quilt curtain" and teach us what it's like to daily rub shoulders with Donna, Fran, John and the rest of the Fabric Cafe production team/family. You definitely put your own spin on things; while still bringing the whole project home with finesse. You remained true to the quilt pattern's overall intent: to make a beautiful quilt that reminds people to stay "Balanced." And, in the process, you showed that Fabric Cafe is the place where individual 's learn in an environment that enables and encourages personal progress; while experiencing one's work as an artist and feel real joy by design.. Thank you for sharing Hannah, I truly loved the lesson and your fun quilt.
Loved the idea of using charm packs for your quilt. Surprised me by the way you cut the top of your charm by rolling it backwards, I have to try that. Also loved your little "boop" as you snipped..lol
Hannah you are a natural. What a wonderful job you do in front of the camera. I love this quilt you made. It's adorable. 🩵 Thanks Hannah for sharing your quilting knowledge with us. Keep us the great work. Luv ya ❤
I have the book because there were a couple of patterns that appealed to me. This wasn’t one of them. It is now, after seeing your quilt. Thanks for all the great videos. They certainly broaden horizons.
Great job Hannah. When I’m bordering a square, I sew a strip of fabric on one side then I get another strip and sew it on the other side before I press and cut them apart to save time at the machine.
Really enjoyed this video! Loved how personal it felt because of how you explained how and why you decided in making your quilt. Loved the gold thread throughout and the backing is amazing plus the quilting is such a bonus!!! One of my favorite videos for sure!! How many times can I hit the like button?🤣👍
Great video Hannah. Chain piecing is definitely faster. I do it all the time. I love how you change it up. I'm doing a baby quilt using the “favorite things” pattern, thanks to your first video that you did using your halloween fabrics.
Love you tutorial I have a lot of charm pack would love to use them for 3 yard quilts. I will have to pull this tutorial up when I get ready to work on 5he quilt. Thanks Hanna you give good directions
Hello Hannah, such a good tutorial on this quilt block that you made. Your explanation along the way was very good and understandable. I saved this video because I liked the method that you used. I love the fabric that you chose It is so vibrant and popping in color. I also like the fact that you used a charm pack. You've made me reconsider using this pattern you chose, in the quilt book quilts on a double. Looking forward to more of your videos, and the quilts that you've made.
That's what I do, both sides then iron and cut. All 3 are fine, your preference. Love watching you grow in your knowledge of quilting. Great idea for using your stash with charms.
I always wondered about how to use my stash of 5” blocks and this is SO inspiring! I’m going back to all of my 3-yard quilt books to see if any other patterns might be a good candidate for this method. Hmmm, maybe even my 10” squares will now find a new use! One suggestion, though, please use “column” when talking about long vertical strips (up and down) and use “row” when talking about blocks that go across (horizontally - side to side). I’ve made a few column quilts and some patterns really are easier to sew in columns rather than rows. Thanks for the video!
A great video, Hannah I love the quilt, but I do love that back, with the specs of gold looks just like fireflies, we call them lightning bugs in Northwest Indiana.
Using a bigger ruler allows placement of the cutter without being on the fabric so that the beginning of the cut is smooth and away from you rather than a 'push' downward into the fabric. ALSO: place folded fabric with the fold side closest to you to avoid 'pressure bubbles' from pushing away from your body when cutting.
Hannah, great job on giving us options to get a bit more creative. I do use the chain piecing method when working on scrapy Quilts. It is faster because you don't cut thread, and then you may use the rotary cutter and ruler to trim the sections apart. 🎶💐💖
My favorite color is teal too! Working on a 3-yard quilt right now from the Fast & Fun (Garden Path) booklet. Would love to show you because it has teal in it with my 2nd favorite color, coral/orange.
Great tutorial! I have done the "strip" piecing of all the squares as was in your "thought". I think works really well. There is a little time saved as all blocks can be cut apart at once. Cannot wait to do this!
Chain piecing almost always saves time. I sew the squares to one strip, cut apart, then sew the other side of the block to the next strip, cut apart, press, then trim.
I enjoyed your video. I like working with charm packs but have not seen a lot of patterns. I do hope you continue to show videos including charm packs.
Hannah, I think your idea is very creative. I applaud you. However my eye is distracted by the different borders around the charms. For some reason it just jangles to me. I think making the charms work with borders would eliminate that ‘jangle’. Thank you for showing what is possible with a charm pack and a 3 yard quilt pattern. Keep quilting, you are inspiring many of us. Look how far you have come in a short time!!
Wow Hannah, you have really come a long way! I love your creativity. Thanks for sharing the process you used in such a descriptive way. BTW, The chain piecing method is faster, with the strip on the bottom which is easier to control.
I love your videos too! You are all so talented and entertaining! I may have missed it at some point but do any of you make quilts with more vintage fabric and design? I know you’re mostly modern quilters but I would love some video links if you have. ❤
Hi Sandra! I will list a few links where we've done videos with "traditional" or "vintage" styled fabrics. Remember, any fabrics will work with any pattern - so just because we may not feature a lot of those styles, does not mean they won't look as equally as beautiful! 1. - th-cam.com/video/5bSV8sNmTU0/w-d-xo.html 2 - th-cam.com/video/8c3Sk3vIWEY/w-d-xo.html 3- th-cam.com/video/jkJd21A7tuA/w-d-xo.html
Forgive me for sounding ignorant but when you use the two different fabrics for the borders of the charm square do you only need 1/2 yard of each color or still one years and just adding the charms to the pattern outside of the three yards, just curious how I would plan this in my purchase of fabric thank you
Hi Robyn! I used a little over a 1/2 yard of my teal and blue by the end of the project. Using two different fabrics for your #3 fabric on the blocks and borders - you could make it work with 3/4 yard. However, you will still need to have additional fabric for your binding. I also used a whole yard of my #2 fabric. Hope this is helpful! - Hannah
@@FabricCafe hi Hannah I did the quilt top and just now quilting it ! I loved how it turned out and it was quick . I did sew the charms to the strip first and then cut and it worked beautifully and probably for me quicker Thank you for the response
Hi Martha! You can send in your fabric swatch to Fran and she will help match it - www.fabriccafe.com/Fabric-Matchmaker-Submission-Instructions-p/992201.htm
A 3-Yard Quilt is typically a quilt pattern made with only 3 yards of fabric. We have designed over 100+ patterns using this method of quilting and find that new quilters like it because they are easy and cost effective to make, and experienced quilters like it because they can make several in a hurry! You can find all of our patterns at www.fabroccafe.com, and see more examples of our quilts here on our channel on TH-cam 🥰
Hannah we all LOVE it when you are on here showing/teaching us your "stuff" thank you thank you thank you
Hannah is a great addition to the Fabric Cafe team! I love hearing her talk through her design process. I’ll be looking for more of her videos.
Great job Hannah❣️ I prefer the chain stitching on the long strips. It seems to not only save time but a small amount of fabric as well😉
So fun to have another way to use charm packs!❤

Hannah found out about FC through Fran's son Blake ;-)
Hannah, you are such a natural doing these tutorials. Keep it up
Loved this approach for changing up the pattern. Any pattern can be done with your stash. Choose your feature block and insert blocks from your stash.
Hannah you’re great! So glad you are in front of the camera…you make it real.
Hannah I really like your tips a lot like I tell others. The teal & dark is spaced out and balanced. Did good.
Hannah I love it when you get to do a show. HUGS! Thank you as always.
Catching this video 7 months into the future, but grateful I did. Loved all of it. Thank you, and great job, Sandy :)
Thanks for sharing, like that you show how you chose your fabrics. Love all your ideas.
Love your quilt projects, Hannah! Such cute, fun ideas!
Thank you Hannah! I love having a newby like me making quilts. You address all of the questions that go through my mind.😮😊❤

Hannah, I love the Charm Pack, would make a great & different Eye Spy Quilt. Thanks for helping me think outside the box! 😁
I was thinking I spy too! I chain piece but sometimes do 2 blocks at a time so I can see how it's going together.
Love this episode. Love Hannah ❤️

You do such a great job!!
So funny that I found this tutorial when I am using a Gustav Klimpt charm pack to make this pattern.
Your so creative !
So pretty !
chain piecing is quicker.... love the colors and contrast
I have done the chain piecing of a square onto a strip of fabric. I do think it goes quicker.
Bravo !!
Hannah, do you make all lap sizes, or have you ever made queen/king? Love the video..❤
She made a king size for her parents.
Hi! Yes, she made a king size for her parents as a Christmas gift.
I’ve done chain piecing when I used fat quarters for the blocks. To me it was easier.
