Fishing rockfish with barbless hooks makes dehooking a lot safer and simple. Commercial fishing for rockfish for 20 years taught me this. All of our cod fishing hooks are with the barbs crimped.
Because we were trolling for lingcod we would use regular hooks. We also crimped our barbs when commercial fishing for sockeye as well. It just made it so much easier on by catch and throughout the dehooking process. The fish just slide off and really we didn't notice any more fish pre releasing on us. Just my thoughts.
I love the Asian guy: The guide: " don't set the hook." The Asian guy: " you mean like this... I'm sorry." The guide: " let him eat it until your pole is doubled over before you set the hook." The Asian guy: " you mean like this.... oh, I'm sorry." Skip, you are a saint! I did Charter out of Southern Oregon and would try to explain that you have to let your finger off the button of the electric reel before the swivel gets to the rod otherwise it breaks off and all your gear is lost. Some of these guys would do it over and over and over again. But you Captain are a lot more gracious than I. This is a boat and a skipper you want to Charter
These single action reels are used on the West Coast of BC because it's a lot more challenging/entertaining to bring in a salmon with them than a conventional levelwind reel.
The mooching reel, like a fly reel, has a 1:1 gear ratio so it provides a bigger challenge for anglers when fighting a fish. Some prefer it than a levelwind reel for this reason.
Great skipper, knows the story not only on how and where to get fish, but also with safety and the importance of good equipment!! I live in Ireland and fish in Canada and the USA every year, I was fishing on Vancouver island in the fall of 2015 and it was there with a guide called Des Hatcher in Port Renfrew that I learned the importance of bleeding fish out, it makes such a difference. I am off in three more days to fish the Florida keys for Tarpon and then I am going to upstate New York for the huge runs of Kings and Coho's......... Fish on!!!!!
That's actually a mooching rod and reel setup, which looks similar to a fly fishing setup. It's designed specifically for trolling or mooching in the ocean on the West Coast of BC.
Thanks. :) He's just being a guide, whose head is always wandering to make sure everything runs smoothly. ;) He's gotta watch the rods (most importantly of course!), he's gotta watch the reefs where we were running the boat along, etc. :)
No apology needed. ;) The boat is always moving when fishing in the waters on the West Coast. I'm glad our guide is always so alert. He was probably also just warming up the camera at that time. We filmed that particular shot at 6:30am. ;)
Technology has improved the quality of the rods, reels, other terminal tackle, plus more importantly ensured better safety for participants. The chasing and finding of the fish are still the same, you still need to invest the time and effort to find where the fish are. This is why a small percentage of the anglers are still catching most of the fish. Thanks.
is it me or technology has kinda ruined the fun of fishing? in my opinion just going out with a boat and a rod is way more fun than already knowing where the fish is and having fun trying to find it. anyway that's my opinion i would like to know what you think of it? and by the way great video as always keep it up!
Wonderful video. I'm in the second year of owning a trawler on San Francisco Bay and starting to fish. ( I appreciate all the info you impart.) Seems like there is a lot to learn and I am a little late at starting to fish but it sure is fun.
Hey Rodney, great video. Its nice to see how your day was other than just meeting you on the dock everyday! Your crew were a lot of fun to host last season. keep yer tip up! -Moose

Had the chance to go out with them in August too, Blast! Couldn't keep the fish off the line! Awesome Charter, awesome guys! Oh and great vid too Rod haha

Thanks Scot, did you also use circle hooks?

Well Norman, one thing we can pretty confidently say is that you're not someone who we'd want to get on the boat with. :)
cree is my back yard so close to Bamfield
Why in the hell would you use those reels
