Back in the 80s, Chinatown was less touristy and many of us locals go to this restaurant for your basic Cantonese fare. I remember the only issue was the area was infested with the Chinese triads during this time. I am glad the restaurant is still there and still serving great food.

      Noodletown endures through it all.

funny you say infested with Triads.....I was there a month ago for a fast bowl of wonton mein with a buddy. A deranged guy came in and started harassing some out of town customers for spare change and got abusive. You would'nt see this kind of stuff happen in the 80's and 90's. Besides, as long as you are not a triad or gang member yourself, you can eat in relative peace and harmony...lol

Nothing quite like a Cantonese person going to a old school cantonese restaurant. Food looks delicious. Love your honest opinions and recommendations. Sad to see old school Chinatown going away. My favorite food. Keep it real! Enjoyable and informative video.

I think Mikey Chen said that Cantonese was not his favorite and that he preferred other regions of Chinese food

@@ramencurry6672 Mikey Chen is an enjoyable foodie. He is not a fan of Cantonese food since he prefers spicier and hotter types of Chinese food. Personally, I never get tired of watching real OG Cantonese food videos.

@@luplew1444 that sounds great. On my next trip to NYC I plan on trying the Cantonese Lobster at Hop Lee restaurant. Supposedly it’s amazing

I saw Mayor Ed Koch there in the early 2000's. I think I was at the last table in the back, and he was at the table next to me. He was with some friends. I didn't see what he was eating. I had the shrimp wonton soup. It was good but I usually like some pork in my wontons. I think that was the only time I was there. My family usually goes to Big Wong or the other Wong's. I'll have to try it again.

Yes, they definitely do their wontons in their own way.

I did see Ed Koch after being mayor there one time with parks commissioner Henry Stern. Giuliani didn't like Chinatown. Stern made a joke at a park about Chinese people should not eat his Labrador.

I want to say this place I haven’t been back in a long time serves very good food since I don’t live in NY anymore it is a shame I can’t get anymore good old school Cantonese food that made for our pallets in NJ.

You should still be able to find decent Cantonese food in other major cities. But finding good versions of New York pizza outside of the Northeast can be more difficult

How long did you spend in there? Did you told them in advance you was filming? That's a small place what time did you go to have the place to yourself ?

I missed my favorite 69 Bayard which the old school cooks makes the best beef chow fun, fried rice and etc. it is a shame that back in the days it is a very busy small shop restaurant that opened till 4am and prior to Covid it start closing way too early at 10pm and freaking Covid killed it. I am still very sad as of today that many of my favorite shops are gone forever.

69 is now a Malaysian restaurant. BLAH!!! I had Joe Shanghai on Bowery recently, not impressed, tourist trap. Cantonese food in Manhattan Chinatown nowadays has all gone downhill since the 1970's-1990's. No more old school cooks. Too many those spicy hot pot craps everywhere, not interested.

69 Bayard and Mei Lai Wah ( before they started charging $2.00 for a char siu bow) stayed open late because all the mah jong and pai gow players would go grab a bite after 8 rounds . Sad to say i think the gambling crowd has aged out. The last time i was able to just walk in and sit down for a serious game of mah jong was 25 years ago. Now we play mah online.....lol

Sweet and sour pork chop with egg fried rice. Roast pork wonton noodles. Pickle mustard green with squid or beef.

I think you should have tried the wonton noodle first, while the noodles were still al dente.

I like that cash only sign. It’s very typical for Chinese restaurants to have done that.
