Back in 1981, Dodge unveiled the first generation Ram trucks and vans. Everything was fine and dandy until Chrysler realized the need for something to increase sales in Dodge Ram lineup. Competition in the truck market was very stiff between Ford and General Motors, and it was hard for Dodge to carve out a name for themselves in this market.
Today, the 6.7L Cummins has overcome most of it’s early reliability issues, however, it features even more emissions controls now than it did before. Even with stricter emissions, the modern 6.7L Cummins outputs an insane 1,000 lb-ft of torque thanks to various upgrades.

I love the fact that ram still uses an i6 format. It just seems more industrial and utilitarian.
Notice how politicians even managed to ruin the reliability of an engine??? I’ve owned all Cummins series and the other big three. I can say my 12 valve was the most reliable and was like a grandad to the PS’s and Dmax that would always have little issues. Great video!!

The 6bt was available in isuzu trucks in Asia as well
But it was mostly full sized truck that could carry around 20 tons at its back

I sold Cummins engines in the industrial/construction market for 20 years and the B-Series really put Cummins on the map in the construction market. We had an engine that would fit into so many different types of equipment that we never had before, it really enhanced Cummins reputation in that marketplace. The reason the 6BT was so strong, it was originally a joint venture engine with J.I. Case for use in their industrial/construction equipment so it was built to last from day one. Unfortunately exhaust emission regulations, a necessary evil, has a negative effect on reliability/durability and performance and makes a good engine seem bad at times.
if the 5.9 was torquier it was because of is multiplaform layout meaning that it was use on semis , tractor and snow blowers(my uncle worked in a company making industrial snow blowers and the 12v 5.9 was used at first and the 24v came later on even tho the 12v stay for long for it's simplicy and reliabilty)
Love my 95 12v any day! Yes it's a little slow to accelerate with a 24ft enclosed trailer and about 20k pounds combined, but its faster than I can shift it without the trailer. Should mention I haven't touched the p-pump so its bone stock and all original at just shy of 200k miles and I dont wanna mess with how reliable it is for me.
You must shift slow. A 1995 manual trans is rated at a whopping 175hp and 420tq. It's about as slow as they come. Engine is reliable for sure, with exception to 5th gear falling off

You failed to mention the latest 6.7L uses a CGI block. Lighter than steel and stronger than the steel block.

I bought my '98.5 Ram brand new and have done lots of work on it and modified the crap out of it. But had no idea until now that the pistons were aluminum. Hard to believe they can hold up to the heat.

@@bluesky-ud9wg When the exhaust gasses are leaving the manifold at 1300+ degrees, how does it not melt the pistons? Does the oil and coolant do that much?

The fact that almost every upgrade performance to the diesel engine in this era, while impressive, has led to the EPA cracking down on the entire aftermarket of "off-road" performance companies due to the "visual smoke" that is unnecessary, in this market, due to the "bros" that are the outlier of the typical enthusiast is a travesty to every enthusiast.

And here I thought I was going to learn about semi engines that really make up Cummins bread and butter.
all three engines have their strengths and weaknesses. even though i am a ford guy, i prefer the 5.9 cummins over any of the others, with the navistar and powerstrokes next, with the exception of the 6.4, and the duramax bringing up the rear, though it also in its later versions is a very good engine.
many of the issues these engines have can be overcome with the judicious application of aftermarket parts designed to overcome the weaknesses of these engines.
The 6bt 12v is one of the best inline 6 diesel motors ever made , shame they have to keep changing/They used to fit them into 17 tonne trucks over here in England and did the job well.I have done work on them and the early motor with 170-180 bhp were built so strong you were not going to brake it, not like all this new crap

I've just swapped my 5.9 Cummins because of blow by. But the new donar engine won't start if weather is under 60 degrees. Any idea what the fix is?

All stock from a performance/mechanical stand point and running strong at 240k
There's probably not a nickels worth of difference in Ford, Chevy, or Dodge anymore. They're all expensive and they'll all quit on you. I like them all as I've driven them all

Well 2 are v8's an one is a inline 6, 2 you can delete on the cheap one is super expensive.
Ram is definitely the best of the 3 if you want a reliable work truck....once you delete it obviously.

Not sure what Zombies has to do with a modern diesel starting and running. Same for nukes. Pretty sure if you have to worry about your truck running due to a nuke... You're probably gonna have bigger issues. As said before. An emp, you would have bigger issues also. Ppump isn't the only mechanical diesel from the big 3 either. GM 6.2 or 6.5. Ford had the 6.9 and 7.3 just to name a couple

Worst part about a Cummins is the guy driving it that modded it to roll coal. Nothing says overcompensating like a 2500 black smoking random people.

I've had two Cummins-powered Rams: a 2001 2500 24V/NV4500, and a 2008 3500 CR/G56 SRW. I used both for hotshotting travel trailers over about 4 years. The '01 is the one I started with, at 293,000 miles and ran it to 577,000 miles in about 3 years. I went through an NV4500 about every 75,000 miles. In the end, I retired it from hotshotting but kept it for sentimental value. I bought the '08 and ran it for about 12 months and ran it from 156,000 to 266,000 miles. Both trucks spent about 2 months per year in downtime, but the '01 was cheaper to operate because it got better fuel economy. When I quit hotshotting, I traded the '08 in, but still have the '01.
I almost unsubscribed when I saw the thumbnail’s riced rolling coal truck at the drag strip. I’m usually all for American made Naturally Aspirated V8 engines in pony muscle cars and tow work trucks.
But when you see a riced/bastardized Dodge Ram and Chevrolet Silverado truck spewing tons of toxic black smoke built from the new factories in Mexico after they fired hundreds of thousands of American workers and shutdown USA factories it’s moronic.

I have to disagree on the 7.3 Powerstroke. The 6.7 Powerstroke is way more superior to the 7.3. HP, TQ, refinement and CGI block. Trust me I've owned both.

@@countcuda70 best used and new from cummins is 100% the 6.7, i have a 12 valve 5.9 and a 6.7 no comparison, sure 12 valve is awesome, it breaks down and youll know whats wrong before you even pop the hood, but no comparison to a 6.7. From ford 7.3 is the most reliable but it is super weak, not even worth buying, just get a gaser. 6.7 PS for sure. From chevy lp5, honestly never liked duramax much before the lp5, lbz is amazing dont get me wrong but lp5 is better in every way after a delete, only problem with lp5 is the cost to fix, but they are really reliable good motors so they wont need much money for a long time
@@Berto-1117 I guess it depends on what "best" is. For making power. The 5.9 and the 6.7 both have huge potential. You're right on the 7.3 Not very powerful in today's standards but a power house for it's day. Last but not least. The LBZ Duramax. It's a great engine. Powerful, quiet... So if power is your best. Sure, that list makes some sense. Best could also be how each platform got to where it is today. 5.9 is a legend. Was the go to engine for it's day. Reliable, durable, lasts forever. Probably saved Dodge at the time. Without the 5.9 Cummins. Ram may not be where it is today. Ford with the legendary, reliable 7.3! Not a powerful engine but would last forever. I know they had the 6.9 and 7.3 idi but they couldnt compete with the new direct injection diesels. The 7.3 Powerstroke didn't save Ford but its was so good. People are still willing to pay good $$ for them today The LBZ Duramax. Not the first or the second version sure. So to that the LB7/LLY deserve some credit but the LBZ. Powerful, reliable, quiet... Well quiet for it's day anyways. Was and is a great engine today. All 3 of the HD diesel brands needed/need one another to continue to make each other better.
Step 1: If something breaks, call Dodge, not Cummins.
