    I have the 6.7 on our ranch. Pulls heavy trailers with livestock and/or feed and it works great. The trucks in this video... A laughing stock to an American producer. Stay in the city and keep pretending food comes from the back of the store.

    Owned both and have love for each of them. 6.7 will work if deleted and I would recommend arp head studs. The 68rfe 6 speed automatic transmission is great when working but prone to failure with hp increase unless built. The g56 6 speed manual transmission is probably more reliable but not as much fun on the street. Like said in this video the 5.9 is more reliable but has some disadvantages too. If I was going to have to pick between the 2 I would pick the 5.9 just because of its overall reliability. That being said I really do love them both. Just my opinion. To each, their own.

    I have 2 of the 5.9 / 12 Valve in 1 ton trucks I uses on my farm and I love them. I retired from Union Pacific Railroad as a electrician. The newer Technology is great as long as you have a standby mechanic to keep it running. Union Pacific Railroad uses older Locomotives with mechanical blowers in there Local switch yards till about 2012, because all you had to do was fuel them check the oil and run the shit out of them. With the NV4500 trans it makes all the power I will ever need and no repairs after 20 years .The only weak link is the lift pump starving the VP44 injection pump. A good fuel pressure gauge and keeping the filter changed is so important. Unless I wreck it it will be the last truck I ever own.

    My wife and I are full time musicians and full time in our 26 foot travel trailer (30' overall). We pull it with our 2007 3500 4X4 with a fully enclosed fiberglass CargoBody cabover work van style camper. We sought out the last 5.9 (early 2007) for it's better mileage. With the cabover semi-empty (around 700 lbs) at 55 mph on level freeway, we got 25.5 mpg. Now that the camper is full of tools, and pulling the trailer (8,000 lbs), were averaging just shy of 16 mpg, which is where the 5.9 really shines, especially now that diesel is so expensive!

    Went from a 6.7 to a 5.9. I tow aprox 70,000 a year. Don't want to up set 5.9 folks, but for my need I've found 6.7 to work for me better. My 2010 6.7 provided me with 210,000 miles in that stretch I replaced 2 water pumps 1 alternator. All other repairs were not done on the power train. The truck I'm currently piloting is a 5.9. It works ok, but I have had to adjust my trip times as I'm slowed more often than in the past. I also have a hard time maintaining an exhaust gas temp that will not damage the truck. Learning to drive with new limits is I guess a personal problem to get past. The up side to this new, to me 5.9 is the fuel mileage. My new 5.9 gets almost 50% better mileage. That is the main reason I'm keeping it.

    That's like comparing the 7.3 and 6.7 Powerstroke
    It all depends on what you want in power
    In both cases the 6.7 is superior

  • @zacjones6711
    @zacjones6711 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    It does not reduce reliability, it removes all reliability as 6.7 emission systems will fail. I own both, currently 1 6.7 (have owned 2) and 4 5.9 trucks. For driveability/street both being modded the 5.9 wins period. For pure power/torque (max hp pre-loading boost drag racing/tractor pulls or 800hp or less towing) 6.7 is king, there is no substitute for displacement.
    That being said, you will spend 1-3k+ a year cleaning/replacing emission systems (that are proven to not reduce emissions in real world applications, reason they are used: invest/law require to buy/use) on a street legal 6.7 as you warranty does NOT cover these systems, read it.
    Now if you make the 6.7 illegal for the street by removing the egr and dpf and def systems it is the superior power plant for max hp applications and just as reliable as the 5.9. If you want to understand why the current emission systems do not work, ie do not help the environment, they reduce power when in action thus you press the accelerator further down burning more fuel..... That is why 10-15 max mpg 6.7 towing, 16-21 mpg 5.9 towing both trucks making the same horsepower. Food for thought.

  • @amosesh5898
    @amosesh5898 4 ปีที่แล้ว +17

    You can upgrade the 6.7 by installing the 5.9 head, injection system, and ecu. Firepunk Diesel has a video on that
    While there may be some benefits to running the stock vgt turbo you will quickly find its disadvantages if you’re going for maximum power. It is actually quite inefficient with a high drive to boost pressure ratio so even if you’re running your truck basically stock you’re still better off with a relatively small fixed geometry turbo (BorgWarner S380 or S400)
    There are a lot of other parts that interchange on these engines such as water pump, oil pump, camshaft, valve train, front cover, etc. The 6.7 will bolt in to a previous generation truck with no modifications.
    This video mentions head gasket failure- the 5.9 head gaskets have been known to hold very high boost pressures even when using oe headbolts this is not the case with the 6.7
    Both motors can make over 1,000 hp with compound turbos and larger injectors. Pretty much the only reason for Dodge to make the switch is emissions control. This increased displacement allowed them to comply will still competing with Ford on power output

    Thanks for the vid. I always wanted to know the differences. Sounds like both engines are good, it just depends on personal preference/use. For me, I'm glad I have the 5.9 version for reliability as I have no need or desire to add any performance mods.
    I have an '03 3500 Ram dually 4WD with the 6 speed manual I bought used in 2009 with about 55K miles on it. Almost 12 years later now, it now has a little over 135K miles on it. I only use it for travel. One year it sat for the whole year in the garage, which wound up costing me over $400 dollars to replace the Optima batteries. I now take it out once a month for a short drive, about 30 -50 miles to keep everything working.

    One thing about the 6.7 is the rod angles which is a weak point vs the 5.9. 6.7s bend rods easily when lots of fuel is dumped at low RPM. Would be a good idea to go with forged rods if you're pushing more than 1800 ft lbs of torque on a stock 6.7 bottom end.

    6.7 with vgt is in another league towing heavy, and the 6spd at with it makes it so much better than any 5.9 truck ever dreamed of being
    The 6.7 doesn't "blow head gaskets", the owners do when they push drive pressure beyond the compressor map safe efficiency range, by running super duper cool race car tuner boxes to add 300 hp
    Anyone who says otherwise has never used both, the 4x4 5.9 trucks in tow mode are screaming at 65mph, while the 6.7 truck can tow in 5th or 6th and run 80 loaded to the hilt at an easy rpm, although 5th is better for it obviously
    The riced out trucks at the beginning were definitely comical
    The 5.9 has no emissions garbage so it will always be called the more reliable engine, but the dpf has nothing to do with the engine being reliable or not, that's a totally separate emissions system..
    They're both the best engines to have ever been put in a light duty truck and probably always will be...

      @@RJ-sr5dv Hey buddy. From my understanding, having the vp44 24 valve 98.5 to 2002 camshaft is the best stock camshaft cummins ever put into the 5.9. In short answer, yes, a cam upgrade will eliminate most if not all of the cylinder egr but it should be noted that cummins also had other variables in the mix to achieve in cylinder egr, and to be emissions compliant, such as the smaller turbine housings on the he341 and he351 turbochargers as well as different emissions friendly ecm programming and I'm sure that the piston bowl shapes, injector spray angles, injection events (which are different from 2003-2004.5 to 2005-2007) are a factor as well. If you do a cam swap, it should take care of most of it but I would do custom tuning too from a place that has tested the tunes on a dyno with that cam in a common rail engine and with close to the setup that you will have. Hope this helps brother!

    Luck me I have both now In My garage. The 2nd gen (95) 2500 complete mods on the engine and runs around 350 hp. It sits for now since I broke the input shaft in the transmission ( I have a Billet triple disk torque converter) too much power applied to the Billet shaft ? I don't know but will find out soon. The 5.9 is just plain fun to drive. I drag race a 6.7 a stop light ( really really dumb couldn't help myself) he beat me off the line but once the triple disk lock in I had him. I never done that before and won't again but what a rush for 65 year old guy.
    I install new 4 exhaust. When started it for the first time my wife came out house and said it sounded like a big rig. That made my day.
    I just bought a 3500 6.7.for towing the 5th wheel the 6.7 has the 5.9 beat for low end power and the exhaust brake and just plain comfort of driving . If everyone here can image lining up 6 coke cans in a row. The siamese cylinders are joined like that. There are provisions for improved flow as close as they can get so that there are no cooling issues between the cylinders.
      The rest is basically the same as previous years with coolant flowing around the cylinders on each side. Coolant can also flow from side to side at the front and rear of the block.
      Siamese cylinders actually add a great deal of integrity and rigidity to the engine block.

    I have a modified 6.7 and two stock 12 valves. I have not drove a truck that makes more power then my 6.7, but it was very expensive to buy and build. Both 12 valve trucks are very reliable other then transmission issues. I don't think you could build a 5.9 to a 6.7 potental, but the 5.9 is a very reliable engine, especially the 12 valve. The second gen 24 valve VP44 5.9 engines make good power but suffer fuel pump issues (they can be fixed though). The third gen 5.9 common rail engines make good power, they are reliable, and they can be built to make awsome power. They can give a 6.7 a really good run for its money, but when comparing apples to apples the 6.7 will out pull the 5.9.

      Yah forget about the engine that put Cummings on the map for pickup truck moters. I own a 12 valve and wouldn't trade it for one of those newer pieces os

    I just bought both lol got a 89 5.9 and love it all around I bought a 2012 brand new and love the power the 89 is stock the 6.7 is deleted and tuned and I have put over 200k on the 6.7 and pulled a lot of heavy heavy things and I don’t treat her nice and not a single break you must build the truck for the task your using it for to get the best truck

    I think the 5.9 is a lot better, they are more reliable, and will last longer since they don't got all the emissions crap, plus they are making the newer diesels even quieter, like who likes a quiet diesel, diesels are better loud

    So 6.7 has a million failure points the 5.9 didn't. Oh and uses way more fuel.

    Modern pickup diesel engines sound lame. I remember listening to a stock 6.7L Powerstroke once & I couldn’t tell if it was a Powerstroke or a 6.2L Boss. It’s so muffled u can’t tell the difference

    Honestly. I think all turbo Diesel engines are pretty amazing. They each have their flaws, but all can be made “bulletproof” without a whole lot of money. I have a 2011 F250 with the 6.7 diesel. I’ve done a few things to prevent failure and it’s been nothing but outstanding work truck and fast. I love the Cummins and duramax seem great too, Allison transmissions are always nice. But a lot comes down to maintenance. Diesel is a different beast. Myself, I like to drain my fuel filter every so often and replace them bout every 3 oil changes. Most people won’t and bad things happen

      Cant rat on a well kept diesel of any breed

      Why you drain it and change it so often?

    • @MrLegacy36
      @MrLegacy36 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@braveheart2785 well. I believe I read that in a manual somewhere to change them every 15,000 miles, so 3 oil changes for me. I learned that for a Diesel engine the fuel system is a huge part, expensive, and the fuel pump and glow plugs rely on clean diesel for lubrication. And the fuel filters are cheap too. 1 fuel filter, 1 fuel filter/water separator.

    All 3 (includes 12 valve) are winners. 12 valve for complete reliability. 6.7 for the ultimate power. I've got the common rail 5.9, which i'll be keeping for quite a while (the non-emission reliability). One item NOT mentioned is that the 5.9s are getting old. the newest being 14 years old now (mine :-). A 12 valve would make an awesome commuter, while a 6.7 dually is going to be your mass hauler. I.E. depends on your use. In the end, get a Cummins!

    Hands down the 5.9 I have an 07 with 445000 miles and all it’s had is a 2 clutches and 1 transmission and I use it daily for cross country towing

    • @eased4183
      @eased4183 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yessir towing is the point of the cummins, people joke on my grandfathers 24 valve thats been passed down to me but i find it funny that these kids have tow mirrors on their trucks and ridiculouse rims and tires and they aint even using it for what its meant for. So what i cant roll coal, i can tow a damn church.

    you have the injector firing voltage backwards. We are working through this issue trying to run the more reliable 6.7 injector in a 5.9 truck running the 5.9 ecm. The 5.9 injectors fire at 18v and hold at 18v the 6.7 injectors fire at 24v and hold at 18v so we are getting a sluggish opening on the 6.7 injectors causing a rough start.

    Dumped my 07 3500 6.7 after just one year. Couldn't keep it out of Grapevine DCJ service dept. Every 3 mo. It was a check engine light and Dodge refused to keep fixing. The tech said afterwards we aren't allowed to tell you this but hauling 1K in the bed and you would have never had an issue. Great after losing 20K for a lemon. Bought a 20 yr old VW still driving today. Mechanical fuel injection is awesome.

    5.9 beat motor ever for pick ups bomb proof enough power for what ya need no need to be doing 80 hauling 25k but the best thing I like about them especially the old 24v's an 12v's is that old school rig sound cannot beat it

    I’ve seen million mile 5.9s
    I’ve seen million mike 6.7s
    Both are good when they are running. But the power of a proper 6.7 is realllll sweet
