I’m still hunting down some of those 2000s ogryn, they’re the best rendition imo. Love these sillier guys too tho, I wish I had friends who’d give me minis🤣
because the old metals models were restricted in design by the casting process the sculptors had to put way much more creative effort into the aesthetic rather than the poses. It shows. I love the old model generally. Sure there are a lot of duds but they still hold up in the main.
Yup the old models were done via Spincasting metal models which meant the pieces, by and large, had to remain fairly flat hence why you had a lot of marine sgts doing a the 'power fist pointing one way, bolter the other' type pose.
I love the existence of Abhumans among the Imperial Guard because it shows how hypocritical the Imperium is. "Human," "Abhuman," and "Mutant" are mostly political terms. Cadians have a physical mutation from Chaos exposure, but they get to be Human. Ogryn are just a local human phenotype, but the Imperium can't put them on propaganda posters, so they're Abhuman. If the Ogryn ever rebel, you bet they'd get reclassed as mutants real fast!
And worth noting that the Imperium can't exist without Navigators who are also Abhumans (literally having a third eye), and they are not just tolerated but are considered nobles and live in fancy palaces on Terra itself.
I just love seeing old metal models fully restored and painted with modern brands and techniques. Had a bit of fun myself earlier this year with an old Necron Lord, that is one of my favorite models in my army now. These Ogryn have so much character in each sculpt. It makes me wonder when GW will get around to updating them as well. At one point there were rumors of them being in KT but not sure how that would work out with such an elite unit
My fav' Ogryns are still the Chaos ones from Vrakks. Gorgeous models, full of detail and personality plus each model was properly unique in its design.
Ogryns are some of my favorites. Those "old, old" Ogryn are actually the third or fourth iteration of Ogryn, depending on how you count. There was "tiny" the prototype - about the same size as a primaris. Then came a set with single part torsos and then 2 part ones. Then these guys who were pathfinders for the first plastics.
As a metal oldhammer collector i'm the wrong person to ask for my opinion - I obviously love these older sculpts. Metal can - or at least could, new generation plastics are getting better and better - just hold so much crisper detail. I also feel the more cartoony style really fits with the feel of 40k as a dark comedy - but I also understand why people might like the newer aesthetics as well, matter of taste really.
For stripping I'd reccomed a nail brush over a toothbrush as they're more abrasive and their large size means you can scrub more violently. I still use a toothbrush for finer inbetween bits
Old models are amazing! I’m currently running through a battleforce of 1993 metal praetorians, with a side show of metal cadians and space marine (imperial agent) support. As for abhumans, for one, they are viewed as mutants to the more intolerant imperials. However, what makes an abhuman and a normal mutant different is that 1.) abhumans are extraordinarily similar biologically to humans, simply shaped differently 2.) abhumans are stable. Ogryns and ratlings come in all kinds of shapes and colors, but they’re all ogryns and ratlings. You can’t take a giant mutated human and call it an ogryn. 3.) there is no chaos corruption involved. All abhumans formed the way they are as natural evolutionary adaptations to whatever planet they originated from.
I believe it. I like using just washes over a zenithal for basing bits, especially plants. I haven't seen that particular technique on any videos, possibly because speedpaint and contrasts have taken over.
I generally enjoy watching the evolution of both miniatures and the painting processes/philosophies involved. Back in the 80's it was rough on both accounts, but year by year, decade by decade this side of the hobby has gotten to be as good as any other form of art out in the world, it's been a real treat to follow over the course of my life
Got so addicted to watching your channel!..After 23 years I started painting warhammer again I can't thank you enough! I'm having so much fun ❤️ keep up the great work
The new ogryn's kit is a really good "blank slate" for conversion. I agree that everything looks the same but there is not much too so you can easily convert them to something nice. I have a project of Catachan's Ogryns and adding bandanas, nametags and such will be really easy with the new kit compared to the old one. If i didn't planned that, the old ones would be nicer for sure
It's honestly crazy that Ogryn get grandfathered in, but those one humans that Dorn found had to be exterminated because Xenos had slightly altered their brains to use the warp differently, AMAZING video as always though. I doubt I'll ever get into painting because I shake, but it's so nice watching your videos.
To my knowledge, Ab-Human signifies a stable mutant strain. Yes they're weird looking, but the child of two ogryn will be an ogryn. Two random hivewaste/warp mutants, who knows what their children will be like, it's a genetic Gatcha.
Completely agree with the classics looking great. They feel more expressive. The current models have that digital copy-paste thing going. I dont know what it is, but the stubble is what really makes these Ogryn to me and makes them pop. Chain fist guy is definitely my favorite sculpt.
Hey, I use a sonic cleaner to clean car parts, and as such, have to swap between different cleaning chems pretty often. Rather than emptying the tub every time, I just have mason jars with the chem I like to use, with the sonic cleaners tub filled with just regular water. Put the mason jar, with acetone and models in it, in the sonic cleaner(add/take away water from tub as needed, don't want the jar floating, nor do you want the water to be too low). Don't heat the water. Lid on the jar but loose enough so vapor can vent. Love your work, keep on brushin'.
I love that about allot of the older GW models they had that personal feel. Things like the old ball joint space marines let you add some little touches to poses and so on that was a great part of the hobby
I think the mini's turned out great. I've never painted or owned a mini or played warhammer, but I still thoroughly enjoy watching your content. Its even inspired me to give hand painting a try, so I made my own wet palette and will give hand painting a gunpla a try, once the paints arrive.
Absolutely love it! i got a bunch of these in the draw yet to repaint up from the early 2000s. Great to know they defs can look awesome and at home on the current tabletop

You’re videos always surprise me with how entertaining and fun they are. You have a super positive channel that I find myself enjoying more and more. Keep it up buddy!
I think a stellar paint job like yours really does show how cool the old old models are, honestly they don't look too out of place than a normal Ogryn, definitely better than the GW paintjob on the new ones
Really enjoy seeing the restoration of old metal models Plenty deserve to look their best!! 🎉 This is my biased opinion as I'm still collecting 2nd - 4th edition Armies
These chunky boys are super flavorful and waaaay better than the new ones. So much more character in each one of them! They give off that insane vibe that I expect from Ogryn in a battle frenzy.
A little tip for stripping metal models -- Toss them into a glass jar with acetone, seal it up and put that sealed jar into the ultrasonic cleaner filled with just water. It'll scrub them but not aerate the acetone.
The original ( even older than these guys ) Ogryn sergeant with the ripper gun was my favourite model in my Rogue Trader Imperial army army back in the early 90s.
>LA's Totally Awesome I see that you know what's good, as well. Even without the sonic cleaner, I've had luck with just simply leaving a mini submerged. That stuff *works*.
The inclusion of Ogryns and Ratlings in the Imperial Guard is actually a great bit of world building for the Imperium. They're willing to do something hypocritical like allowing mutants to coexist with "Normal" humans as long as they are useful.
Just use acetone to begin with Jay, it's much easier than other methods, leave them in overnight and it'll dissolve the super glue, it's the big advantage of metal models.
You don't need an ultrasonic cleaner to clean a metal minis - just dunk them into the acetone. Though, if they have some plastic or resin parts on them, you want to clean those separately, because acetone will completely dissolve them.
i love these, turned out great and super jealous of your bravery with metal minis, im always nervous and clumsy around them but i really like some of the older sclupts - although i do like the new ones too

The “shoulder armor” guy is a special character bodyguard Ogryn that Guard officers could take. Nork Deddog.

In the older ork Codices you could bring Ogryn mercenaries as a part of your forces, it's very "blood axe-y" imho
